The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Aurora contracts Groot for trash, recycling, yard waste and large items, all collected on the same day by separate trucks, and the whole bulky program runs on a 2.75 sticker. Bundles of material that will not fit a cart, including small amounts of construction debris and rolls of carpet, have to be tied no larger than two feet across, four feet long and 50 pounds, and each bundle takes one sticker, while a single chair, table or mattress takes one sticker of its own. Appliances are the exception in process rather than price: they have to be scheduled ahead with Groot and still carry one sticker. Electronics have two routes, a free city drive through event in the fall with registration and a two screen limit per vehicle, or a prepaid Groot curbside collection priced per item with a separate scale for televisions. Paint, oil, pesticides and pool chemicals cannot go out at all, and they go free to the permanent household hazardous waste facility on Fort Hill Drive in Naperville, open weekends.

Groot trash, recycling and yard waste service

Accepted with preparation

Trash, recycling, yard waste and large items are collected on the same day by separate trucks through Groot, with three trash cart sizes, unlimited recycling and a sticker on anything set out outside the cart.

City cost & eligibility
From $9.72 for the published monthly rate for the low volume option, trash collected every other week in a marked 35 gallon cart. Groot bills the standard cart service quarterly rather than monthly and the city publishes the low volume rate of 9.72 a month, the senior orange bag price of 1.70 a bag or 34.00 for a roll of 20, and the waste sticker price of 2.75 each. Extra recyclables go out free in containers no larger than 25 gallons, and trash set out outside the cart needs a sticker.
When & how
Collection runs on one day a week with separate trucks for trash, recycling, yard waste and large items, and everything is at the curb by 6 a.m. A holiday falling on or before the collection day delays that week by one day.
Get it ready
Keep trash inside the cart unless it carries a sticker, keep recycling loose and unlimited in the 35 or 65 gallon cart, and put yard waste in a 30 gallon Kraft paper bag of 50 pounds or less with a waste sticker on each bag. Yard waste mixed with trash or set out in plastic bags is not collected, and bundled brush goes out sticker free between the first Monday in April and the first Friday in November.

Bulky items and bundles by sticker

Accepted with preparation

A bulky item or a tied bundle leaves on the regular collection day with one sticker on it, and the service is unlimited as long as every item carries a sticker.

City cost & eligibility
$2.75 for one City of Aurora waste sticker, required for each bulky item or bundle. Stickers cost 2.75 each and are sold at the listed vendors and at City Hall, 44 E. Downer Place. One sticker covers one bundle or one single item such as a chair, a table or a mattress, and material that will not fit in a cart is accepted without a volume cap as long as each item is stickered.
When & how
Set the item or bundle out on the regular collection day, and call Groot at 630-892-9294 with questions about how a piece should be prepared.
Get it ready
Tie bundles no larger than two feet in diameter, four feet in length and 50 pounds, with one sticker affixed to each bundle. Single items take one sticker each, and small amounts of construction debris and rolls of carpeting are accepted this way. A load too large to bag or bundle should be handled as a special pickup or in a temporary container arranged at least 24 hours ahead.

Couches, chairs and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Chairs, tables and similar furniture are named as single bulky items that take one sticker each on the regular collection day.

City cost & eligibility
$2.75 for one City of Aurora waste sticker for a single furniture item. Stickers cost 2.75 each from the listed vendors or at City Hall, and one sticker covers one single item such as a chair or a table. The service is unlimited as long as each item carries a sticker.
When & how
Set the piece out on the regular collection day, which is the same day as trash, recycling and yard waste with a separate truck for the large items.
Get it ready
Affix one sticker to each item, keep the piece out of the carts, and bundle any loose carpeting or padding separately because rolls of carpet fall under the bundle rule with one sticker apiece. A piece that is too large to handle should be discussed with Groot as a special pickup.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

A mattress is named as a single bulky item that takes one sticker on the regular collection day.

City cost & eligibility
$2.75 for one City of Aurora waste sticker for a mattress. Stickers cost 2.75 each from the listed vendors or at City Hall, and a mattress takes one sticker as a single bulky item rather than as part of a bundle.
When & how
Set the mattress out on the regular collection day with the sticker affixed.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and out of the carts, affix one sticker, and keep it clear of the yard waste bags so the separate trucks can find each load. A mattress with a frame bundled to it may be treated as a bundle, so ask Groot at 630-892-9294 if the pieces are joined.

Appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

An appliance has to be scheduled in advance with Groot and still carries one sticker.

City cost & eligibility
$2.75 for one City of Aurora waste sticker per appliance, with the pickup scheduled ahead. One sticker at 2.75 covers an appliance, and the collection has to be arranged in advance by calling Groot at 630-892-9294. Refrigerators, stoves, water heaters and similar units are the city's examples.
When & how
Call Groot at 630-892-9294 to schedule the appliance collection, affix the sticker and put the unit out for the arranged day.
Get it ready
Empty the unit and secure the doors so nothing can be trapped inside, keep the appliance out of the trash and recycling carts, and keep loose refrigerant equipment upright until the hauler's truck arrives.

Televisions, computers and electronics

Accepted with preparation

Electronics are banned from Illinois landfills and have two routes in Aurora: a free city drive through event by registration, or a prepaid Groot curbside collection priced per item.

City cost & eligibility
From $45 for the published Groot charge for each e-waste item collected curbside, televisions priced separately. Groot charges 45.00 for each e-waste item collected other than a television, with televisions priced separately: one television under 50 pounds costs 100.00, each additional television under 50 pounds adds 15.00, and a television over 50 pounds carries an extra overweight charge. The collection must be scheduled at least 24 hours ahead and prepaid at 630-892-9294. The city's own electronics drive through events are free with registration.
When & how
Register for the free city drive through event, with the 2026 fall event on Saturday, August 22 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Route 59 Metra Train Station, 1090 N. Route 59, or schedule and prepay a Groot curbside e-waste collection at 630-892-9294.
Get it ready
Registration for the city event opens Friday, August 7 at 7 a.m., is limited to the first 2,000 Aurora residents, requires identification, allows two screens per vehicle either televisions or computer screens plus unlimited other electronics, and refuses businesses, large appliances, batteries of any type, air conditioners, ballasts, bare CRT tubes, capacitors, carbon monoxide detectors, dehumidifiers, light bulbs, liquids, microwaves, salvaged units, smoke detectors, VHS tapes, wood speakers and medical equipment. Wipe personal data before any device leaves the house.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named in the city's bulky list or the hauler's rules, so the machine has to be confirmed before it goes out.

City cost & eligibility
No page retrieved for this guide names an exercise machine, and the sticker rule is written around named single items and bundles, so call Groot at 630-892-9294 and ask whether the machine goes out as an oversized item with a sticker or needs a special pickup.
When & how
Call Groot before the collection day, and set the machine out only once the hauler confirms how it is handled.
Get it ready
Take the machine down as far as it will come apart and keep the loose weights with it, and keep it out of the carts. If the machine is collected as a bulky item it needs one sticker, and if it is refused it belongs in a special pickup or a temporary container.

Construction material and renovation debris

Accepted with preparation

Small amounts of construction debris are accepted in bundles with one sticker each, and the hauler states the service is unlimited as long as each item has a sticker.

City cost & eligibility
$2.75 for one City of Aurora waste sticker per bundle or item of construction debris. The hauler states that construction debris service is unlimited as long as each item has a sticker, and stickers cost 2.75 each from the listed vendors or at City Hall. Bundles must be tied no larger than two feet in diameter, four feet in length and 50 pounds, with one sticker per bundle.
When & how
Tie the material into bundles and set it out on the regular collection day with a sticker on each bundle, or arrange a temporary container or special pickup with Groot at 630-892-9294 at least 24 hours ahead for a larger job.
Get it ready
Keep the bundles within the size and weight limits, keep liquids, chemicals and hazardous material out of the pile, and keep large appliances and electronics on their own routes. A renovation that generates a heavy or bulky load should be planned as a container rental rather than a curb pile.

Tires

Special rules apply

No Aurora page retrieved for this guide names a tire route, and Illinois bans whole tires from landfills, so the route has to be confirmed.

City cost & eligibility
Neither the city pages nor the hauler page retrieved here lists tires, and Illinois bans whole tires from landfill disposal, so call the city at 630-256-4636 or Groot at 630-892-9294 to confirm the current disposal route and any charge before leaving a tire at the curb or loading it.
When & how
Confirm the route by phone first, then use whichever option the city or hauler names.
Get it ready
Keep tires out of the carts, out of the bulky pile and away from the yard waste bags, and ask the retailer that mounts tires about a take back, since tire shops are the usual receiving point for a household set.

Paint, chemicals, batteries and other hazardous products

Accepted with preparation

Hazardous products cannot go out at all and are taken free to the permanent household hazardous waste facility on Fort Hill Drive in Naperville, open weekends.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. There is no cost for drop off at the household hazardous waste facility at 156 Fort Hill Drive in Naperville, which is one of only four permanent sites in Illinois and is operated with Aurora and Will, DuPage and Kane counties. Household batteries other than motor vehicle batteries are also accepted there.
When & how
Use the facility on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., excluding holidays, and do not leave material outside those hours.
Get it ready
Automotive fluids, cleaning solvents, fertilizers, flammable materials, motor oil, oil-based paint and pesticides cannot be set out for curbside collection. Accepted material includes automotive fluids other than lead acid batteries, home repair and hobby supplies, painting and decorating products including acetone and oil based stains, cleaning products, medicines and cosmetics, pesticides and herbicides, pool and water treatment chemicals, and household batteries. Ammunition, explosives, fireworks, car batteries and commercial or industrial waste are refused, and rechargeable and lithium batteries must be recycled rather than thrown away because they are fire hazards.
