Lakeshore Recycling Systems runs Des Plaines trash, recycling and yard waste on a weekly route, and the city includes one bulky item a week at no extra cost. Anything beyond that limit, plus white goods and most electronics, is scheduled with LRS, while tires, electronics and batteries can go to the Public Works garage on Wednesdays.

Yard waste is collected weekly from April 1 through the end of November, on the same day as trash and recycling, in kraft bags or marked containers. Bundled branches and a separate fall leaf program follow their own rules.
Des Plaines residents can drop tires without rims at the Public Works garage on Wednesdays, limited to two tires per visit. Tires are not part of the curbside cart program.
Scrap metal and large metal items are not accepted in the recycling cart. A metal item inside the bulk definition can go out with the weekly bulk allowance, and heavier scrap needs a scheduled pickup.
