A mattress or box spring is a bulk item at two pink stickers, and Oak Park adds a preparation rule that catches people out: the unit has to be inside a plastic mattress cover that is taped securely shut before it goes to the curb.
City cost & eligibility
$8 for for the two pink refuse stickers that a bulk item requires at 4.00 each, with one bulk item collected each week. Oak Park residential buildings of five or fewer units served by the hauler, with the mattress covered as the Village requires.
When & how
Set the covered unit out on the regular collection day by 7 a.m. with both stickers attached, and note that a mattress and box spring together use the two example slots the Village lists separately.
Get it ready
Buy a plastic mattress cover from a retail outlet such as Walmart, Lowe's, Menards or Home Depot, seal it with tape, and attach both stickers to the covered unit, because the Village states the cover requirement directly.
The Village's hauler requires one pink refuse sticker for each bag or rigid container of 30 gallons or less and two pink stickers for any item over 30 gallons, which is why a bulk item costs two stickers. Stickers are sold for 4.00 each at locations including Village Hall at 123 Madison Street, and one bulk item is collected each week with a general guideline of 50 pounds.
Some items need preparation before they leave the curb
A mattress or box spring has to be inside a plastic cover that is taped securely shut, a carpeting roll takes two stickers and cannot weigh more than 50 pounds or run longer than four feet, and an appliance collection has to be requested at least 48 hours ahead because appliances cannot go to a landfill.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.
