No city or county program collects mattresses. Overland Park covers the donation cost for a mattress in good condition through Sleepyhead Beds, and a mattress in poor condition leaves with the private hauler that serves the address.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. The City of Overland Park states it is covering the cost for residents to donate mattresses in good condition through Sleepyhead Beds. Sleepyhead Beds lists a $40 charge paid at signup for a pickup, with no refund if the driver rejects the item on arrival, and the city is covering that cost for Overland Park residents. A mattress in poor condition goes to the private hauler serving the address, which sets its own bulky-item terms.
When & how
Start the Sleepyhead Beds donation with its online form, which it answers within two business days, or ask the permitted hauler serving the address for a date inside its yearly bulky item pickup.
Get it ready
Sleepyhead Beds takes twin, twin XL, full, full XL and queen mattresses and box springs, plus crib mattresses, pack and plays and most bedding, and it turns away anything with stains, mold, large rips, holes, burns, broken slats or odours. It does not take king mattresses, Sleep Number products, water beds, futons, sofa beds, day beds, toppers, frames, headboards, rails or adjustable beds.
Trash, recycling and yard waste go at the curb rather than in the street or on the sidewalk on collection day, and containers come back within 24 hours. Hauler-issued carts may sit within two feet of the front, side or rear of the house without screening, any extra container has to be screened or kept in the garage, and an association may add its own screening rules.
On bulky item day, set out the cart and the items separately
One permitted hauler asks Overland Park customers to set out one of its carts to show that the household is a customer, and to keep the bulky items out of that cart. Pull back inside anything on the curb you want to keep before the truck comes, because the crew takes what is at the curb.

The Johnson County Landfill at 17955 Holliday Drive in Shawnee takes municipal solid waste, construction and demolition debris, tires, treated wood and yard waste, refuses hazardous waste, opens Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., and takes card or credit account payment rather than cash. The Olathe Transfer Station at 1681 S Valley Road charges by the ton with a minimum per load, quotes the higher non-resident minimum to an Overland Park vehicle, adds published per-item fees for passenger tires, large truck tires and appliances that still hold Freon, and refuses a residential load brought in a commercial vehicle or by a hired hauler.
