The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Overland Park has no city trash truck. Residential trash, recycling and composting come from private companies that the city permits, and each household or homeowners association contracts with the company that serves its address. The city itself runs a drop-off Recycling Center on Hardy Street, spring and fall construction debris drop-off events, a Recycling Extravaganza, and it covers the cost for residents to donate a mattress in good condition. Large loads leave three ways: the hauler's yearly bulky item pickup, a donation outlet, or a self-haul trip to the Johnson County Landfill in Shawnee or the Olathe Transfer Station.

Mattresses

Special rules apply

No city or county program collects mattresses. Overland Park covers the donation cost for a mattress in good condition through Sleepyhead Beds, and a mattress in poor condition leaves with the private hauler that serves the address.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. The City of Overland Park states it is covering the cost for residents to donate mattresses in good condition through Sleepyhead Beds. Sleepyhead Beds lists a $40 charge paid at signup for a pickup, with no refund if the driver rejects the item on arrival, and the city is covering that cost for Overland Park residents. A mattress in poor condition goes to the private hauler serving the address, which sets its own bulky-item terms.
When & how
Start the Sleepyhead Beds donation with its online form, which it answers within two business days, or ask the permitted hauler serving the address for a date inside its yearly bulky item pickup.
Get it ready
Sleepyhead Beds takes twin, twin XL, full, full XL and queen mattresses and box springs, plus crib mattresses, pack and plays and most bedding, and it turns away anything with stains, mold, large rips, holes, burns, broken slats or odours. It does not take king mattresses, Sleep Number products, water beds, futons, sofa beds, day beds, toppers, frames, headboards, rails or adjustable beds.

Couches, chairs and household furniture

Special rules apply

Furniture is not a city service. It leaves with the private hauler that serves the address, through a free Habitat ReStore donation, or through the recycling event's home goods partner.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Habitat for Humanity ReStore picks up furniture and home goods in salable condition from the curb free of charge and takes drop-offs during published hours, and it also sells a paid priority pickup. Anything not in donatable condition goes to the private hauler serving the address, which sets its own bulky-item terms.
When & how
Book the free ReStore pickup online or drop furniture at a ReStore store Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., or schedule the item inside the permitted hauler's yearly bulky item pickup.
Get it ready
Donate only what is clean and salable, because ReStore staff and drivers screen donations against their criteria and drop-offs close one hour before the store. Keep the piece dry and reachable at the curb for a pickup, and leave it out of a trash cart so the hauler can see it.

Large household appliances

Special rules apply

Appliances are outside the city's own services. A working appliance is a ReStore donation, a Freon appliance carries an extra fee at the Olathe Transfer Station, and the permitted hauler decides what its yearly bulky pickup takes.

City cost & eligibility
From $40 per appliance that still holds Freon at the Olathe Transfer Station, on top of the per-ton tipping fee and its minimum per load. Olathe Transfer Station, 1681 S Valley Road, Olathe, where an Overland Park load pays the published non-resident rate. A residential load may not arrive in a commercial vehicle or with a hired hauler, and Habitat ReStore picks up working appliances free of charge instead.
When & how
Drop off at the Olathe Transfer Station Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. or Saturday 7 a.m. to noon, book the free ReStore pickup, or ask the permitted hauler serving the address whether the appliance fits its yearly bulky item pickup.
Get it ready
Empty and clean a refrigerator or freezer before it moves, expect the Freon fee when a unit still holds refrigerant, and keep appliances out of the city's construction debris events, which refuse them along with electronics, mattresses and household hazardous waste.

Televisions and household electronics

Special rules apply

The city Recycling Center refuses electronics and sends them to the Recycling Extravaganza, where the published price is per television, and Johnson County lists local businesses that take them year-round.

City cost & eligibility
From $20 per television at the Recycling Extravaganza electronics collection, run by the event partner. The Recycling Extravaganza is open to anyone with no residency requirement, takes cash or cards, and collects most items powered by a cord or a battery including computers, televisions, printers and small appliances no larger than a minifridge. The per-television rate is the only electronic price the city publishes, so confirm other devices with a local drop-off.
When & how
Use the spring or fall Recycling Extravaganza on its published date, or a year-round business from the county electronics list, such as the Overland Park store on 135th Street or a retailer with a home haul service.
Get it ready
Never put a television, monitor or computer in a trash cart or in a Recycling Center bin, because the city lists electronics as not accepted there. Wipe or reset anything that stores data before it leaves the house, and take the remote and cables with it.
Recycling CenterRecycling ExtravaganzaElectronics Recycling

Construction and demolition debris

Special rules apply

The city runs a spring and a fall construction debris drop-off for residents, a demolition landfill inside Overland Park and the county landfill both take that material, and scrap metal can go to the Recycling Center year-round.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no fee for its construction debris drop-off events, and the disposal facilities and private haulers set their own rates for everything else. Confirm the current rate at the receiving site before the load is moved.
When & how
The published event is Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Shawnee Mission South High School, and appointments are made through the city's signup page. Self-haul loads move during the landfill's or transfer station's published hours.
Get it ready
Bring identification because staff check residency, expect a limit of one visit and no more than a truck and medium trailer load, keep commercial material out, and separate the load because some of it is recycled. Furniture, mattresses, appliances, electronics, yard waste and household hazardous waste are refused at the event.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

No city or county source names exercise equipment, so a treadmill or elliptical is handled as a bulky item through the permitted hauler or as a self-haul load at a disposal site.

City cost & eligibility
No published city, county or hauler rate covers an exercise machine. Ask the permitted hauler serving the address whether the machine fits its required yearly bulky item pickup, or confirm the gate price at a disposal facility.
When & how
Call the permitted hauler serving the address, or use the landfill's or transfer station's published hours for a self-haul trip.
Get it ready
Fold or tie down the deck and handles so the machine can be lifted safely, take off a console, screen or battery pack so anything electronic or battery-powered is handled separately, and keep the machine dry and reachable.

Mixed bulky loads

Special rules apply

A clean-out moves through the permitted hauler's yearly bulky item pickup, a donation outlet, the city's recycling event, or a self-haul load at one of the two disposal sites the city lists.

City cost & eligibility
Each permitted hauler sets its own prices and policies for the yearly bulky item pickup. KC Disposal tells its Overland Park customers to set out up to five items by 6 a.m. on their zone date, so confirm the date and the item list with the hauler that serves the address.
When & how
Use the hauler's published pickup date, the recycling event's published date, or the landfill's or transfer station's published hours for a self-haul trip.
Get it ready
Only items a hauler accepts leave the curb, so keep construction material, concrete, white goods, fencing, tires, water heaters, propane tanks, yard waste and wet paint out of a bulk pile for the hauler whose flyer refuses them, and pull anything you want to keep back inside before the truck arrives.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Put it at the curb, not in the street

Trash, recycling and yard waste go at the curb rather than in the street or on the sidewalk on collection day, and containers come back within 24 hours. Hauler-issued carts may sit within two feet of the front, side or rear of the house without screening, any extra container has to be screened or kept in the garage, and an association may add its own screening rules.

Trash Haulers

On bulky item day, set out the cart and the items separately

One permitted hauler asks Overland Park customers to set out one of its carts to show that the household is a customer, and to keep the bulky items out of that cart. Pull back inside anything on the curb you want to keep before the truck comes, because the crew takes what is at the curb.

Use the permitted hauler that serves your address

Any Overland Park household, because curbside collection is a private subscription rather than a city service.

Cost & conditions
Each permitted company sets its own prices and policies, so confirm the rate and what the yearly bulky item pickup includes before the item moves.
Arrange it
Call the company that serves your address from the city's permitted list and ask whether your item is included in the required yearly bulky item pickup or needs a separate arrangement and date.

A routine subscription may not include every bulky item. One permitted hauler's Overland Park flyer refuses construction material, concrete, white goods, fencing and car parts, and its list is an example of what each company decides for itself.

Donate to Habitat ReStore

A household with furniture, working appliances or usable building supplies that are clean enough to sell again.

Cost & conditions

Arrange it
Complete the Sleepyhead Beds donation form, and a staff member responds within two business days to arrange the pickup.

The bed has to be clean and intact. King mattresses, Sleep Number products, water beds, futons, sofa beds, day beds, toppers, frames, headboards, rails and adjustable beds are not accepted, and the driver makes the final call on site.

Use the city Recycling Extravaganza

A household with electronics, tires, clothing, furniture or usable goods that wants one drop-off date for several different items.

Cost & conditions
From $20 per television at the electronics collection, with other devices quoted by the event's electronics partner. The event has no residency requirement and takes cash or cards. The published electronics price is per television, and tires, clothing, furniture, bicycles, books and building materials go to separate community partners on the same day.
Arrange it
Drive to the published event address during its published hours and hand each item to the partner that collects it. The partner list is published on the city page before the event.

Partners handle only their own material and the city warns that a partner may be replaced on the day. Items must be in good or salable condition to be donated rather than recycled.

An Overland Park household with decking, fencing, flooring, concrete, brick, tile, roofing or similar tear-out material after a renovation.

Cost & conditions
The city publishes no fee for the event. Confirm the current terms when you book the appointment.
Arrange it
Book an appointment through the city signup page and arrive during the published window with identification, prepared to help unload.

Residents only, one visit, no more than a truck and medium trailer load, and no commercial waste. Furniture, mattresses, appliances, electronics, yard waste and household hazardous waste are refused, and some material is recycled so separating the load helps.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

The city lists two disposal sites and states that neither Overland Park nor Johnson County runs a public landfill. The Johnson County Landfill at 17955 Holliday Drive in Shawnee takes municipal solid waste, construction and demolition debris, tires, treated wood and yard waste, refuses hazardous waste, opens Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., and takes card or credit account payment rather than cash. The Olathe Transfer Station at 1681 S Valley Road charges by the ton with a minimum per load, quotes the higher non-resident minimum to an Overland Park vehicle, adds published per-item fees for passenger tires, large truck tires and appliances that still hold Freon, and refuses a residential load brought in a commercial vehicle or by a hired hauler. Both sites publish no residential rate that can be quoted here, so confirm the gate price first. Trash HaulersJohnson County LandfillTrash, Recycling and Yard Waste

You can book while your items are still inside. Arrange any indoor carrying and have everything outside and accessible according to your confirmation. We load and haul it away from there. Contact us before booking if your property has restricted access.

Where can a mattress go in Overland Park?

Two routes. A mattress in good condition can be donated through Sleepyhead Beds, which takes twin through queen mattresses and box springs, and the city states it is covering that donation cost for Overland Park residents. A mattress in poor condition goes to the private hauler that serves the address, which decides what its yearly bulky item pickup will take.Official guidance

Who takes a couch in Overland Park?

Furniture is not a city collection. The permitted hauler that serves your address must run at least one bulky item pickup each year and decides what it will take, while Habitat ReStore picks up furniture in salable condition free of charge and the city's recycling event accepts furniture through its home goods partner.Official guidance

How do you get rid of a refrigerator in Overland Park?

A working appliance is a free ReStore donation, since Habitat picks up working appliances at no charge. A unit that still holds refrigerant carries an extra per-appliance fee at the Olathe Transfer Station on top of the per-ton tipping fee, and one permitted hauler's Overland Park bulk flyer lists white goods such as refrigerators, dishwashers, washers and dryers as items it will not take.Official guidance

Where can a television or old computer go?

The city Recycling Center does not take electronics and points residents to the Recycling Extravaganza, whose published electronic price is per television and whose collection covers computers, printers and small appliances. Johnson County also publishes year-round electronic drop-off businesses, including one on 135th Street in Overland Park.Official guidance

Do trash haulers in Overland Park need a city permit?

Yes. Overland Park permits the companies that serve the city, and a permitted hauler has to provide standard trash removal, curbside recycling of household recyclables excluding glass, and yard waste collection at least 40 weeks a year with yard waste in lawn bags rather than plastic. Each company still sets its own prices and policies.Official guidance

Where can Overland Park residents drop off recycling?

The city Recycling Center on Hardy, open Tuesday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., takes cardboard, paperboard, food and drink glass, plastics numbered 1 to 7, cans, office paper, magazines, newspapers, scrap metal and used clothing, and closes admission at 3:50 p.m. It does not take electronics, batteries, light bulbs, plastic bags or styrofoam.Official guidance

Where does household hazardous waste go in Overland Park?

Johnson County, by appointment. The city directs residents to the county's drop-off for paints, pesticides, tires, solvents, fertilizers, propane and similar material, and the Overland Park haulers refuse hazardous material in a bulk pile.Official guidance
