Couch & furniture removal in IndependenceCity collection Furniture is accepted at the free IndeCleanup pickup and at the Drop-Off Depot. The pickup guidance is specific: the piece has to be dry, clean and easy for crews to reach, and drawers must stay in the furniture rather than being removed. Furniture is free through the one-time IndeCleanup appointment, which is limited to five items and to single-family homes and buildings of six or fewer units, while the Drop-Off Depot charges by the vehicle carrying the load and a private hauler quotes its own rate. Confirm the route with the city on 816-325-2974 before the piece goes out.

Mattress & bed removal in IndependenceCity collection A bed is an accepted example at the free IndeCleanup pickup, listed as a bed including a wood or metal headboard, frame and mattress, and mattresses and box springs are also accepted at the Drop-Off Depot. No wrapping requirement is published. A bed goes out free with the one-time IndeCleanup appointment, counted as one of the five allowed items even when the headboard, frame and mattress are listed together, while a load taken to the Drop-Off Depot is charged by vehicle type rather than per mattress. Appliance pickup in IndependenceCity collection Large appliances such as a stove, washer or dryer and small appliances such as microwaves, blenders and toasters are accepted examples at the free cleanup pickup, and the Drop-Off Depot takes refrigerators, freezers, stoves, dishwashers, hot water heaters, washers and dryers at 20 dollars each. A unit that cools has to be identified as refrigerant bearing when the pickup is booked. Two published prices exist for appliances. The one-time IndeCleanup bulky pickup is free but limited to five items, while the Drop-Off Depot charges 20 dollars per appliance on top of the vehicle based load price. Bags & household clutter in IndependenceCity collection Independence has three bulky item routes and they accept different things. The one-time free IndeCleanup pickup takes up to five items by appointment for a single-family home or a building of six or fewer units, the Drop-Off Depot takes a load on the second Saturday from April to October for a vehicle based fee, and the everyday route is a private hauler the household contracts with. The prices differ by route rather than by item. The IndeCleanup bulky pickup is published as free by appointment with a five item limit and limited spots, the Drop-Off Depot charges by vehicle with a car at 30 dollars, a pick-up, van or SUV at 40 dollars, a trailer of eight feet or less at 50 dollars and a longer trailer at 60 dollars, and a private hauler sets its own rate. Confirm which route fits the item by calling 816-325-2974 for the pickup or 816-325-7727 for the depot question.

The local disposal guide
Independence does not collect residential trash. The city licenses private haulers, publishes the list with phone numbers, and then runs the parts of disposal that a hauler will not: a Drop-Off Depot on the second Saturday of each month from April through October at 875 S. Vista Avenue, an annual community cleanup week that includes a one-time free bulky item pickup by appointment for single-family homes and buildings of six or fewer units, and a household hazardous waste program that is part of the Kansas City regional system. The split between those routes is published in detail. The free pickup takes a bed with its headboard and frame, furniture, carpet, large and small appliances, sinks and toilets, auto parts and bicycles, up to five items per appointment, while it refuses tires, refrigerant appliances, brush, dirt, stumps, lawn mowers, televisions, construction waste and household chemicals, all of which are either accepted at the Depot for a vehicle based fee or sent to a hazardous waste event. Prices at the Depot run by vehicle rather than by volume: 30 dollars for a car, 40 for a pick-up, van or SUV, 50 for a trailer of eight feet or less and 60 for a longer trailer, with appliances at 20 dollars each and tires at 5 dollars each below five tires.

Furniture is accepted at the free IndeCleanup pickup and at the Drop-Off Depot. The pickup guidance is specific: the piece has to be dry, clean and easy for crews to reach, and drawers must stay in the furniture rather than being removed.

A unit that cools has to be identified as refrigerant bearing when the pickup is booked.
Electronics are refused at every city venue. Televisions are on the prohibited list for the free bulky pickup, the Drop-Off Depot refuses televisions and computer monitors, and the mobile hazardous waste events refuse electronics, so the published route is the regional district's drop-off recycling list.
Construction material is refused at the free cleanup pickup, where demolition and construction waste is prohibited, but the Drop-Off Depot accepts sheetrock, windows, shingles, fencing, landscape timbers, bricks and paving stones as part of a paid load, so renovation debris has a published route at a price.
Exercise equipment is not named in either list, but the surrounding rules are useful: battery powered equipment is accepted with the batteries removed, metal fencing and swing sets have to be disassembled, and lawn mowers and gas powered equipment are prohibited at the free pickup and accepted at the Depot with fluids drained.
Tires are refused at the free cleanup pickup and at the mobile hazardous waste events, but they are accepted at the Drop-Off Depot at 5 dollars each while the load has fewer than five tires, and at the vehicle rate above that. Auto parts are an accepted example at the free pickup.
The city runs household hazardous waste through the regional program coordinated by the MARC solid waste district, with a 2026 event on Saturday April 25 from 8 AM to 12 PM in the parking lot at Walnut and Liberty, plus year-round access at the Kansas City and Lee's Summit facilities and ten mobile events across the region in 2026.
The handoff matters
Independence states plainly that it does not provide residential trash service and that residents should contact a private trash hauler for weekly service. It publishes seven haulers licensed to operate in the city: AAA Disposal Service on 816-650-3180, Allied/Republic on 816-254-1470, Compost Connection on 816-761-8300, GFL Environmental on 816-380-5595, Stewart Hauling on 816-223-1920, Ted's Trash Service on 816-252-1594 and Waste Management on 913-631-3300, noting that some also offer recycling and that each company sets its own fees and schedules. The regional district's page for Independence adds a slightly different list of private subscription choices, so the two published lists are worth comparing before a household signs a contract.

Vista Avenue, one mile east of M-291 on Truman Road north of Vista Avenue, from 8 AM to 3 PM, and during cleanup week it also adds a free depot day on Friday October 2 from 7 AM to 5 PM and a fee depot day on Saturday October 10 from 8 AM to 3 PM. The load price is set by the vehicle that carries it rather than by the contents, and when both the vehicle and the trailer carry material both are charged, with appliances and tires priced separately as the two published exceptions. Batteries and lawnmowers carry no fee. Entry is limited to Independence residents with a driver's license or recent utility bill, cash or local check only with no cards or coins, and loads must be tarped or secured under Missouri statute.

The free pickup takes large and small appliances, auto parts, battery powered equipment with the batteries removed, a bed with its headboard, frame and mattress, bicycles, countertops and cabinets, drywall, carpet, empty cans and buckets, old trash cans and recycling bins, sinks and toilets and a water heater, up to five items per appointment for a single-family home or a building of six or fewer units. It refuses items containing refrigerant, tires, brush and lumber, dirt, tree stumps and trunks, lawn mowers and gas powered equipment, yard debris, commercial or industrial waste, demolition and construction waste, dead animals and animal bedding, household hazardous waste, abandoned vehicles and televisions, and several of those refusals are annotated as accepted at the Drop-Off Depots instead.

Five, and only by appointment. The city states that Independence will offer a one-time free bulky item pickup by appointment for single-family homes and apartments with six or fewer units, that each appointment is limited to five bulky items, and that pickup spots are limited and first come first served. Every item has to be listed when the pickup is reserved, because items that are not listed will not be collected.Official guidance
Yes, through the annual free bulky item pickup or at the Drop-Off Depot. The cleanup guidance says furniture and fixtures should be dry, clean and easy for crews to reach, and that drawers should not be removed from furniture. Each appointment is limited to five items and spots are limited, so the piece has to be listed when the pickup is reserved or taken to the depot instead.Official guidance
Yes. The accepted example is listed as a bed including a wood or metal headboard, frame and mattress, and each appointment is limited to five bulky items, so a bed counts toward that number. Mattresses and box springs are also on the accepted list at the Drop-Off Depot, where the charge is based on the vehicle rather than on the individual item.Official guidance
It depends on the route. Appliances are 20 dollars each at the Drop-Off Depot on top of the vehicle based load price, while the annual IndeCleanup bulky item pickup is free but limited to five items per appointment and will not take an item containing refrigerant. The city asks residents to check whether the unit cools and to look for R-22, R-134a, R-410A or Freon labels, and to mention it when scheduling.Official guidance
Yes, for a fee. The Drop-Off Depot's accepted list includes sheetrock, windows, shingles, fencing, landscape timbers, bricks and paving stones, and the charge is based on the vehicle used rather than the contents: 30 dollars for a car, 40 for a pick-up, van or SUV, 50 for a trailer of eight feet or less and 60 for a longer trailer. The same material is prohibited at the free annual bulky item pickup, where demolition and construction waste is on the refusal list.Official guidance
A private hauler the household hires, because the city states that it does not provide residential trash service and directs residents to contact a private trash hauler for weekly service. Seven haulers are listed as licensed to operate in the city with phone numbers, and the regional district's page lists a slightly different set of subscription choices, so both published lists are worth comparing before choosing.Official guidance
Proof that the household is in Independence, brought as a valid driver's license or a recent utility bill, residential waste only with no commercial loads, and payment in cash or by local check because no credit cards, debit cards or coins are accepted. The load also has to be tarped or secured before arrival, because Missouri statute requires that no part of a load can fall from the vehicle.Official guidance
Carpet must be rolled and either over four feet long or 40 pounds to qualify, with smaller pieces going in the regular trash; furniture and fixtures must be dry, clean and easy for crews to reach, and drawers must not be removed from furniture; metal fencing and swing sets must be disassembled; and storm windows and glass panes must be marked with a large X of masking tape and stacked separately. Place everything within 3 feet of the curb no earlier than 5 PM the day before and no later than 7 AM on the collection day, at least 4 feet from the carts and clear of trees, mailboxes, lamp posts and parked vehicles.Official guidance
The city's test is whether the unit cools air or food, which covers a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner, and whether the label mentions R-22, R-134a, R-410A or Freon. If it is unclear, the guidance is to mention it when the pickup is scheduled. Refrigerant appliances are prohibited at the free bulky item pickup and accepted at the Drop-Off Depots, where an appliance is 20 dollars each.Official guidance
The published reasons are putting out more than five items or items not on the approved list, items blocked by cars, fences or trees or not at the curb, items placed where crews cannot reach them, contamination with trash or with prohibited material such as paint, tires, yard waste, auto parts, loose building materials, masonry or household hazardous waste, and appliance problems such as a unit that was not emptied, cleaned or accounted for on refrigerant.Official guidance
No. Because Independence is a member of the Regional Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program coordinated by the MARC solid waste district with Kansas City and Lee's Summit, residents have year-round access to the permanent facilities and may attend any of the 2026 mobile events, which run from Blue Springs on April 11 through Jackson County on September 26. The city event on April 25 is simply the one held in Independence, and every route requires proof of residency and accepts only residential waste.Official guidance
