Book the unwanted bags and boxes left after packing. Choose an available pickup day before you hand back the keys, and arrange to have them outside.

Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.

Independence has three bulky item routes and they accept different things. The one-time free IndeCleanup pickup takes up to five items by appointment for a single-family home or a building of six or fewer units, the Drop-Off Depot takes a load on the second Saturday from April to October for a vehicle based fee, and the everyday route is a private hauler the household contracts with.
Furniture is accepted at the free IndeCleanup pickup and at the Drop-Off Depot. The pickup guidance is specific: the piece has to be dry, clean and easy for crews to reach, and drawers must stay in the furniture rather than being removed.
A bed is an accepted example at the free IndeCleanup pickup, listed as a bed including a wood or metal headboard, frame and mattress, and mattresses and box springs are also accepted at the Drop-Off Depot. No wrapping requirement is published.
Large appliances such as a stove, washer or dryer and small appliances such as microwaves, blenders and toasters are accepted examples at the free cleanup pickup, and the Drop-Off Depot takes refrigerators, freezers, stoves, dishwashers, hot water heaters, washers and dryers at 20 dollars each. A unit that cools has to be identified as refrigerant bearing when the pickup is booked.
Construction material is refused at the free cleanup pickup, where demolition and construction waste is prohibited, but the Drop-Off Depot accepts sheetrock, windows, shingles, fencing, landscape timbers, bricks and paving stones as part of a paid load, so renovation debris has a published route at a price.
Exercise equipment is not named in either list, but the surrounding rules are useful: battery powered equipment is accepted with the batteries removed, metal fencing and swing sets have to be disassembled, and lawn mowers and gas powered equipment are prohibited at the free pickup and accepted at the Depot with fluids drained.
Tires are refused at the free cleanup pickup and at the mobile hazardous waste events, but they are accepted at the Drop-Off Depot at 5 dollars each while the load has fewer than five tires, and at the vehicle rate above that. Auto parts are an accepted example at the free pickup.
The handoff matters
Independence states plainly that it does not provide residential trash service and that residents should contact a private trash hauler for weekly service. It publishes seven haulers licensed to operate in the city: AAA Disposal Service on 816-650-3180, Allied/Republic on 816-254-1470, Compost Connection on 816-761-8300, GFL Environmental on 816-380-5595, Stewart Hauling on 816-223-1920, Ted's Trash Service on 816-252-1594 and Waste Management on 913-631-3300, noting that some also offer recycling and that each company sets its own fees and schedules. The regional district's page for Independence adds a slightly different list of private subscription choices, so the two published lists are worth comparing before a household signs a contract.

Yes. Estimate how many trash bags the small household pile would fill, and bag or box as much as possible. Select furniture and other larger items separately. There is no extra charge just because the pile is loose. Send a photo first if the count or contents are unclear. A household Dumpster Bag choice does not accept construction debris.

Move everything to an accessible outdoor spot before pickup; indoor carrying and sorting are not included.
