Appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

Large appliances such as a stove, washer or dryer and small appliances such as microwaves, blenders and toasters are accepted examples at the free cleanup pickup, and the Drop-Off Depot takes refrigerators, freezers, stoves, dishwashers, hot water heaters, washers and dryers at 20 dollars each. A unit that cools has to be identified as refrigerant bearing when the pickup is booked.

City cost & eligibility
Two published prices exist for appliances. The one-time IndeCleanup bulky pickup is free but limited to five items, while the Drop-Off Depot charges 20 dollars per appliance on top of the vehicle based load price. Confirm which route applies and mention the refrigerant status when booking on 816-325-2974 or 816-325-7727.
When & how
Use the appointed cleanup pickup day or the Depot on the second Saturday from April to October, and expect a refrigerant unit to be handled separately from the free pickup because items containing refrigerant are on the prohibited list there.
Get it ready
Empty the unit of contents, keep the fluids in place unless the item is a lawnmower, check the label for R-22, R-134a, R-410A or Freon if the appliance cools, and say so when scheduling because the city asks for that information.

The city licenses haulers instead of collecting

Independence states plainly that it does not provide residential trash service and that residents should contact a private trash hauler for weekly service. It publishes seven haulers licensed to operate in the city: AAA Disposal Service on 816-650-3180, Allied/Republic on 816-254-1470, Compost Connection on 816-761-8300, GFL Environmental on 816-380-5595, Stewart Hauling on 816-223-1920, Ted's Trash Service on 816-252-1594 and Waste Management on 913-631-3300, noting that some also offer recycling and that each company sets its own fees and schedules. The regional district's page for Independence adds a slightly different list of private subscription choices, so the two published lists are worth comparing before a household signs a contract.

The Drop-Off Depot charges by vehicle, with two exceptions

The Drop-Off Depot runs on the second Saturday of each month from April through October at 875 S. Vista Avenue, one mile east of M-291 on Truman Road north of Vista Avenue, from 8 AM to 3 PM, and during cleanup week it also adds a free depot day on Friday October 2 from 7 AM to 5 PM and a fee depot day on Saturday October 10 from 8 AM to 3 PM. The load price is set by the vehicle that carries it rather than by the contents, and when both the vehicle and the trailer carry material both are charged, with appliances and tires priced separately as the two published exceptions. Batteries and lawnmowers carry no fee. Entry is limited to Independence residents with a driver's license or recent utility bill, cash or local check only with no cards or coins, and loads must be tarped or secured under Missouri statute.

The free pickup and the paid depot accept different things

The one-time free IndeCleanup bulky item pickup and the Drop-Off Depot are not interchangeable, and the prohibited list at the pickup says so by pointing several items at the depot. The free pickup takes large and small appliances, auto parts, battery powered equipment with the batteries removed, a bed with its headboard, frame and mattress, bicycles, countertops and cabinets, drywall, carpet, empty cans and buckets, old trash cans and recycling bins, sinks and toilets and a water heater, up to five items per appointment for a single-family home or a building of six or fewer units. It refuses items containing refrigerant, tires, brush and lumber, dirt, tree stumps and trunks, lawn mowers and gas powered equipment, yard debris, commercial or industrial waste, demolition and construction waste, dead animals and animal bedding, household hazardous waste, abandoned vehicles and televisions, and several of those refusals are annotated as accepted at the Drop-Off Depots instead.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Independence asks households to contract their own collection and then fills the gaps itself. The city states that it does not provide residential trash service, publishes seven licensed haulers with phone numbers and lets each set its own rates, and then runs a Drop-Off Depot on the second Saturday of each month from April through October at 875 S. Vista Avenue, where the charge follows the vehicle rather than the load: 30 dollars for a car, 40 for a pick-up, van or SUV, 50 for a trailer of eight feet or less and 60 for a longer trailer, with appliances at 20 dollars each, tires at 5 dollars each while there are fewer than five, and batteries and lawnmowers free. Once a year the city also runs a cleanup week with district by district curbside bulky pickup days, three neighborhood dumpsters open to any resident with proof of residency, and a one-time free bulky item pickup by appointment for single-family homes and buildings of six or fewer units, limited to five items per appointment with spots that are limited and with every item required to be listed in advance. The two routes are not interchangeable: the free pickup takes the bed, the furniture, the appliances, the carpet, the sinks and the bicycles, while refrigerant appliances, tires, brush, dirt, stumps, lawn mowers, demolition and construction waste, televisions and household chemicals are prohibited there and, where the city says so, accepted at the depot instead. Household chemicals go to the regional program coordinated by the MARC solid waste district: the city event on Saturday April 25 at Walnut and Liberty, the Kansas City facility on 4707 Deramus Street, the Lee's Summit facility on 2101 SE Hamblen Road, or one of ten mobile events across the region in 2026, all free to members of participating communities with proof of residency and residential waste only. Electronics are refused everywhere in the city, including televisions at the depot and monitors at the free pickup, so a screen has to go to one of the regional drop-off recycling sites the district lists for Independence. Before you book

A few things
worth knowing.

Appliance removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Independence.

How much does appliance removal cost in Independence?

A full-size household refrigerator is $109 as a single item. A washing machine is $109, and a dryer is $109. Other appliances have their own catalog prices. Choose each item to see your exact total before booking; disposal and recycling costs are included in the item price.

Can I get same-day appliance pickup in Independence?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup, where available. Checkout shows the dates you can choose. Your pickup is scheduled for a day rather than an exact arrival appointment, and we text you before arrival. Have the appliance disconnected and ready outside by your pickup readiness time.

Can you take a washing machine and dryer in one pickup?

Yes. Add one Washing machine and one Dryer so both units are included in the price. They are separate items, even when you bought them as a set. If yours is a single combined unit or the machines still need to be unstacked, contact us before booking to confirm the scope.

Will you disconnect my appliance or carry it out?

Dropcurb picks up appliances that are already disconnected and accessible outside at ground level. Arrange uninstallation, utility disconnection and indoor carrying before pickup. Use a qualified professional for gas, hardwired or plumbing connections when needed. We handle loading and haul-away from the outdoor pickup spot.

Can I book if the delivery company did not take my old appliance?

Yes. Dropcurb pickup is separate from buying or installing a replacement, so you can book removal on its own. Select the old appliance, choose a pickup day and arrange for it to be disconnected and accessible outside. If your new delivery is still ahead, confirm the retailer’s haul-away arrangements before booking a separate pickup.

What does an appliance cost to get rid of?

It depends on the route. Appliances are 20 dollars each at the Drop-Off Depot on top of the vehicle based load price, while the annual IndeCleanup bulky item pickup is free but limited to five items per appointment and will not take an item containing refrigerant. The city asks residents to check whether the unit cools and to look for R-22, R-134a, R-410A or Freon labels, and to mention it when scheduling.Official guidance

Who collects trash in Independence, Missouri?

A private hauler the household hires, because the city states that it does not provide residential trash service and directs residents to contact a private trash hauler for weekly service. Seven haulers are listed as licensed to operate in the city with phone numbers, and the regional district's page lists a slightly different set of subscription choices, so both published lists are worth comparing before choosing.Official guidance

How should bulky items be prepared and placed?

Carpet must be rolled and either over four feet long or 40 pounds to qualify, with smaller pieces going in the regular trash; furniture and fixtures must be dry, clean and easy for crews to reach, and drawers must not be removed from furniture; metal fencing and swing sets must be disassembled; and storm windows and glass panes must be marked with a large X of masking tape and stacked separately. Place everything within 3 feet of the curb no earlier than 5 PM the day before and no later than 7 AM on the collection day, at least 4 feet from the carts and clear of trees, mailboxes, lamp posts and parked vehicles.Official guidance

How do I tell if an appliance has refrigerant?

The city's test is whether the unit cools air or food, which covers a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner, and whether the label mentions R-22, R-134a, R-410A or Freon. If it is unclear, the guidance is to mention it when the pickup is scheduled. Refrigerant appliances are prohibited at the free bulky item pickup and accepted at the Drop-Off Depots, where an appliance is 20 dollars each.Official guidance

Why was my bulky item not collected?

The published reasons are putting out more than five items or items not on the approved list, items blocked by cars, fences or trees or not at the curb, items placed where crews cannot reach them, contamination with trash or with prohibited material such as paint, tires, yard waste, auto parts, loose building materials, masonry or household hazardous waste, and appliance problems such as a unit that was not emptied, cleaned or accounted for on refrigerant.Official guidance
