Trash goes in the container the hauler provides, and the covered amount is whatever fits with the lid closed. Each extra bag needs a sticker on it, and since January 1, 2025 those stickers are bought from the hauler rather than City Hall. Recycling is unlimited, so a second clearly marked container of recycling is collected at no extra charge on your recycling schedule.
The city states that yard waste cannot be disposed of in the landfill and should not be mixed with trash. Bag it in Kraft compostable bags or tie it in bundles with trimmings under two inches in diameter and no more than 48 inches long and 18 inches in diameter, and check the association contract because yard waste collection is not always included.

Use the donation location finder to choose a staffed site, then hand the equipment to the attendant during staffed hours so it can be checked on the spot.
This is a donation route rather than a disposal service: sites may decline items they cannot resell or recycle, and wiping personal data from a computer is your responsibility.

The city lists the container company without a published rate, and the price depends on the container size, the rental period and the weight of the debris. Ask for the delivery, pickup and any overweight charge in writing before the container is dropped.

Call the container company the city lists, Ted's Trash, at 816-252-1594, or another licensed provider, and agree on the drop-off spot, the load limits and the pickup date. Keep the container off the street and out of the storm drain path.
Container rates are not published by the city, so treat the price as a quote rather than a fixed fee, and confirm what the hauler refuses to take, such as household chemicals and appliances that still hold refrigerant.
Shawnee's own drop-off route is the Johnson County Landfill at 17955 Holliday Drive, inside the city limits at I-435. The voucher mailed in the February newsletter is good for one carload, truckload or trailer load no larger than 5 by 10 feet per household per year when it is shown with proof of residency, and the city says an appliance containing refrigerant adds a fee. Household chemicals go to the county's appointment-only facility in Overland Park at no charge, and yard waste stays out of the trash and goes to the compost operation on the landfill property in compostable bags. Household loads of municipal solid waste, construction and demolition debris, treated wood, tires and yard waste or green waste, all kept in their own categories. The north side of the site also runs the county's permitted yard waste composting operation.
The Shawnee voucher drop-off is for residential customers who bring the newsletter voucher and proof of residency, one vehicle load no larger than 5 by 10 feet per household per year. The facility does not accept hazardous waste. Follow staff directions, expect the load to be weighed, and ask about unloading and separation rules before you arrive.
Monday through Friday 7am to 5pm and Saturday 7am to 1pm, closed Sunday. Holiday closures listed by the operator are Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
