Mattresses and box springs are on the accepted bulky item list. A clean bed in an accepted size can also go to Sleepyhead Beds, which cleans and gifts beds to children in the Kansas City area instead of landfilling them.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the one bulky item pickup each Shawnee household gets per calendar year from its licensed hauler. Sleepyhead Beds is a separate donation route with its own pickup fee, and only beds that pass its condition check are collected.

Book the bulky pickup with your hauler for a collection day, or send the Sleepyhead Beds donation form and arrange the pickup day with the organization.
Get it ready
Tell the hauler how many mattresses and box springs you have and whether they are wrapped. Keep the bed dry and clean, because a mattress with stains, mold, rips, burns or odors is turned away from donation.

Book the yearly bulky item pickup with your hauler
A Shawnee household with a couch, a mattress, most household appliances, a push lawnmower with no fuel or oil, or carpet rolls up to 4 feet long under 50 pounds.
Cost & conditions
No charge. The city requires every licensed hauler to provide one bulky item pickup per calendar year at no extra charge for its Shawnee customers. The address has to have collection service with that hauler, and the pickup has to be scheduled in advance.
Arrange it
Call the hauler that serves your address, book the yearly pickup, and follow the set-out day and placement it gives you. Refrigerators, construction material, glass panels, paint, tires and automotive batteries stay out of the load.
One pickup per calendar year per customer, set-out at the curb with no carrying from inside, and associations may run their own pickup windows, so check with the HOA before scheduling.
A household with a gently used twin, twin XL, full, full XL or queen mattress or box spring that is clean and undamaged.
Cost & conditions
$40 per load pickup fee paid when the donation is scheduled. Beds in Johnson County and inside the 435 loop in Kansas City are picked up within two weeks of the request. The fee is not refunded if the driver arrives and rejects the bed, so check the condition rules first.
Arrange it
Send the donation form from the organization's page, wait for staff to schedule the pickup day, and have the bed ready where the driver can reach it. Email a photo first if you are unsure whether the bed qualifies.
No king-size mattresses, Sleep Number products, water beds, futons, sofa beds, day beds, mattress toppers, bed frames, headboards, rails, motorized or adjustable beds, or other furniture, and nothing with stains, mold, large rips, holes, burns, broken slats or odors.
A household in a homeowners association, an apartment or a shared property where the board or manager contracts for collection.
Cost & conditions
The association may include trash and yard waste in dues or contract for them separately, and no rate is published for that arrangement. Confirm what the dues already cover before you set anything out.

Ask the board or manager which licensed hauler serves the address, whether yard waste is in the contract, and how a resident requests the yearly bulky pickup.
The city asks residents to check with the association before scheduling a bulky pickup, because associations may set specific pickup times. Shared buildings also need an approved outdoor spot that keeps sidewalks and driveways clear.
Shawnee's own drop-off route is the Johnson County Landfill at 17955 Holliday Drive, inside the city limits at I-435. The voucher mailed in the February newsletter is good for one carload, truckload or trailer load no larger than 5 by 10 feet per household per year when it is shown with proof of residency, and the city says an appliance containing refrigerant adds a fee. Household chemicals go to the county's appointment-only facility in Overland Park at no charge, and yard waste stays out of the trash and goes to the compost operation on the landfill property in compostable bags. Monday through Friday 7am to 5pm and Saturday 7am to 1pm, closed Sunday. Holiday closures listed by the operator are Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
The first qualifying household load of the year is free with the voucher and proof of residency. Confirm any charge for additional visits or oversized loads at the gate.
