Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.

Westland does not make residents book a large item pickup. Bulk items go out every other week on the same day as the recycling collection, and each service allows up to 2 large items that cannot fit into a trash can or up to 8 extra trash bags. The city's own sheet adds a tip that a household setting out only the 2 large items may also include up to 2 extra bags.
Furniture is the first item named on the city's allowed bulk list and it appears again on the hauler's copy of the same list, so a couch, chair, table or dresser goes out with the ordinary bulk collection rather than a booked appointment. The size ceiling is the refused list, which turns away hot tubs, sheds, swing sets, trampolines, pianos, picnic tables, pool tables and lawn gliders.
Mattresses are named on the allowed bulk list in both the city sheet and the hauler page, so bedding goes out with the every other week bulk collection. The 2 large item limit per service is what matters in practice, because a mattress and its box spring together use both of that day's items.
Appliances are on the allowed bulk list and the entry names dryers and refrigerators, so a stove, washer, dryer or refrigerator can go out with the bulk collection. The Westland Recycle Center also takes household appliances as a drop off, with refrigerators, stoves, air conditioners, washers and dryers named, but a refrigerator has to arrive with the doors and the Freon removed.
Televisions are on the allowed bulk list, so a screen goes out with the regular bulk collection. Computers, laptops, monitors, printers, phones and similar devices have their own route: a no-cost city drop off day held twice a year, usually in the spring and the fall, which accepts flat screen monitors and televisions only and has the certified recycler destroy computer hard drives. The Recycle Center itself refuses electronics and computer equipment.
Construction or remodeling debris is refused by category, with shingles and drywall named as examples, and the same not allowed list rules out concrete, bricks, dirt, fencing, wood boards, paneling and wood pallets. The Westland Recycle Center refuses construction materials and concrete as well, so a renovation load has no city route at either the curb or the drop off.
The city does not list exercise machines by name. The allowance is written as up to 2 large items that cannot fit into a trash can, with the examples introduced by such as, which leaves room for a treadmill or an elliptical, while the same list refuses gas-powered equipment and oversized pieces such as hot tubs, sheds, swing sets and trampolines. Treat a machine as a maybe and confirm it before you set it out.
Automobile and car parts are on the not allowed list and the entry spells out that it includes tires and rims, so tires are not a curbside or bulk item in Westland. The Westland Recycle Center accepts scrap metal but the city publishes no municipal tire route at all.
The handoff matters
Bins and bulk items go on the street side of any ditches or the back of the curb, and the city asks for at least 4 feet of space between the trash bin, the recycling bin, the bulk pickup and any yard waste containers so the arms can reach each one. Keep the pile clear of parked cars, fire hydrants, trees and utility poles, and clear the snow before you set a bin out, because a bin placed in the street interferes with plowing. Have everything out by 7:00 AM since collection runs from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
