Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.

The county defines bulky items as mattresses, major appliances and furniture that will not fit a curbside container. There is no curbside bulky program, so the item moves through your hauler, a licensed Class D junk hauler, or a trip to the Recycling Center Plus at a published per item fee.
Furniture is accepted for a fee at the Recycling Center Plus in household quantities, and the county fee schedule prices each kind of seating separately, from a love seat without a hide-a-bed up to a couch with a hide-a-bed or recliner.
A mattress is a priced item at the Recycling Center Plus, not a curbside pickup, and the county caps the drop-off at eight mattresses per day.
Major appliances are recycled at the county drop-off for a published per unit fee that depends on whether the unit holds refrigerant, and appliances are named as waste that cannot go in the mixed garbage cart.
Electronics are recycled at the county drop-off with prices set by device type and screen size, cell phones are free, and Minnesota prohibits putting cathode ray tube devices in mixed municipal solid waste.
Exercise equipment is named in the county's bulky category A, so a treadmill, elliptical or weight machine is a priced drop-off item rather than a curbside pickup.
Construction and demolition material is accepted in residential quantities at the county drop-off and by the ton at the Kalmar Landfill, but the landfill is built for haulers and registered users rather than for a household car load.
Household chemicals and batteries go to the county Hazardous Waste Facility, tires go to the drop-off by the tire or to the landfill by the ton, and tires, lead acid batteries, used oil and yard waste are all named as waste that cannot go in the garbage cart.
The handoff matters
Olmsted County issues four classes of solid waste hauler licence, and Chapter 3500 requires the appropriate licence before a person may provide hauler services. Class A covers full curbside service including bulky items, Class B covers source-separated organics, Class C covers roll-off and compactor service, and Class D covers bulky item and cleanout hauling as a secondary service to labour or site cleanup, which is the licence a junk removal company needs. The county publishes the current licensed lists, notes that Class D haulers may not provide weekly garbage service, and warns that hiring an unlicensed junk hauler can leave a household exposed if the waste is not disposed of properly.

Yes. Estimate how many trash bags the small household pile would fill, and bag or box as much as possible. Select furniture and other larger items separately. There is no extra charge just because the pile is loose. Send a photo first if the count or contents are unclear. A household Dumpster Bag choice does not accept construction debris.

Larger loads go to the Kalmar Landfill, which accepts concrete, brick, bituminous, untreated wood, masonry, glass, rock and plastic building parts at 35 dollars per ton with a minimum for loads under one ton, but the landfill is built for licensed and registered haulers, so a self-hauler needs a dump trailer or truck or county pre-approval.
