St. Peters splits electronics two ways. A television or monitor can go out as a bulky item, but only with the glass taped in a big X and kept in its own pile, and Recycle City no longer takes flat screens. The drop-off route is St. Charles County Recycle Works, which publishes a per item fee list.

Recycle Works Central publishes the per item figures rather than one price: a CPU or a flat screen monitor is 5 dollars, a CRT monitor 20 dollars, a flat screen television of any size 15 dollars, a CRT television under 30 inches 30 dollars and 30 inches and over 40 dollars, with a wood console or rear projection television at 50 dollars and a floor copier at 50 cents per pound. Keyboards, mice, fax machines, scanners, laptops, typewriters, cell phones, DVD players, VCRs, stereos, clock radios, video game systems, Christmas light strands and cords carry no charge. Confirm the exact item at the counter before loading.

Get it ready
Tape a big X from corner to corner across the glass with duct tape and place the item in a pile on its own so the driver can see it, because the city states that glass items without tape are not collected. Wipe personal data before a computer leaves the house, and remember that Recycle City refuses electronics at its drop-off center and no longer accepts flat screen televisions.
Four preparation steps decide whether the pile is collected
The city asks for specific preparation before a bulky load goes out. Stoves need their latched doors removed, and lawn mowers need the gasoline and oil drained. Glass items, including shower doors, windows, mirrors, television sets and computer monitors, need a big X of duct tape across the glass and a pile of their own, because the city states that glass without tape is not collected. Brush and limbs go in a separate pile as their own collection, are never bundled, and stay under 4 feet in length and 8 inches in diameter. Everything sits at least 4 feet from cars, mailboxes and trees and never under a utility line.
Only the container the city furnishes may be used, and everything has to go inside it. The cart goes to the curb by 6:30 a.m. on collection day and no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before, with the wheels and the handle facing the home, and stays 4 feet from cars, mailboxes and streetlights. The lid may not stand open more than 12 inches, and the cart is stored out of sight from the street between collections. Sharps go in a heavy-duty puncture-resistant container with a teaspoon of bleach and a taped lid and never in a blue bag, and hot ashes wait in a metal container outside until they are fully cool.
