The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

St. Peters runs its own solid waste operation rather than contracting a hauler. Every home, single-family or multi-family, can schedule up to two bulky item collections a year at no extra cost and chooses its own date through the STP COLLECTS app or by phone, with a ceiling of 3 cubic yards per collection. That single program is what takes mattresses, furniture, doors and appliances that do not contain refrigerant, and it also takes televisions and monitors as long as the glass is taped with an X and kept in its own pile. Refrigerant appliances move on a separate, fee-based appliance pickup or to the county Recycle Works facility, which removes the refrigerant on site. Recycle City on Ecology Drive handles recyclables all week and takes walk-in trash by volume, and St. Charles County Recycle Works takes electronics, appliances and household chemicals under a published fee list.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

A mattress is a named bulky item, so it rides the free bulky collection that each home can schedule twice a year. The city takes it at no extra cost up to the per collection volume limit, which makes St. Peters one of the places where a mattress leaves without a special fee.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Each St. Peters home, single-family or multi-family, can schedule up to two bulky collections a year at no extra cost, with up to 3 cubic yards per collection. Anything beyond 3 cubic yards is not collected, and St. Charles County Recycle Works refuses mattresses and box springs, so the city program is the route that takes them.
When & how
Schedule the bulky collection through the STP COLLECTS app or the city website for a single-family home, or by calling Solid Waste at 636-970-1456 for a multi-family building, then set the mattress out no later than 6:30 a.m. on the pickup day and no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress at least 4 feet from cars, mailboxes and trees and out from under any utility line, because the automatic arm needs clear space and items under lines are not collected. Count it against the 3 cubic yard limit for that collection and do not add it to a yard waste pile.
Bulky item collection page with the two free scheduled collections a year for every home, the STP COLLECTS app and phone scheduling, the 3 cubic yard limit, the accepted furniture, mattress, door, appliance without Freon, swing set, furnace and glass item lists, the taped glass requirement, the refused list and the fee based Major Appliance Pickup at 15 or 20 dollarsSt. Charles County Recycle Works Central page with the Triad South Drive address, the Monday to Saturday hours, the appliance collection and its 15 dollar fee, the refrigerator and air conditioner intact delivery rule, the per item electronics fee list, the fluorescent bulb allowance, the seasonal household hazardous waste window and the refused items list

Couches, sofas and furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is a named bulky item, collected at the curb on a scheduled date at no extra charge within the per collection volume limit. A couch, a table or a dresser therefore leaves without a fee, provided the load stays inside the limit.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Furniture is accepted as a bulky item at no extra cost under the two scheduled collections a year that every St. Peters home gets, with up to 3 cubic yards per collection.
When & how
Schedule the collection first through the STP COLLECTS app, the city website or 636-970-1456, then set the furniture out by 6:30 a.m. on the chosen pickup day and no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before.
Get it ready
Keep every piece at least 4 feet from obstructions and out from under utility lines, and leave anything smaller than a trash cart out of the pile, because bulky collection is reserved for items that will not fit inside the cart.

Appliances without refrigerant

Accepted with preparation

Dishwashers, dryers, stoves, washers and water heaters are named as bulky items, and the city states that appliances without Freon qualify for that free collection. Doors come off a stove first, and a lawn mower needs its fuel drained.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Appliances that do not contain Freon are accepted through the free bulky item collection, which every St. Peters home can schedule twice a year at no extra cost. A fee based Major Appliance Pickup and a drop off at Recycle City are also offered when a household wants a weekday appointment instead.
When & how
Schedule the bulky collection through the STP COLLECTS app, the city website, or by calling Solid Waste at 636-970-1456, and put the appliance out by 6:30 a.m. on the pickup day. The fee based Major Appliance Pickup runs Monday through Friday when a weekday service date is easier.
Get it ready
Remove the latched doors from a stove before it goes out, and drain the gasoline and oil from a lawn mower. Keep the appliance at least 4 feet from obstructions and never under a utility line, and confirm the unit never held refrigerant before choosing this route.

Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners

Special rules apply

Refrigerant units are deliberately kept out of the free bulky route, which takes only appliances without Freon. The two published routes are the city Major Appliance Pickup and the county Recycle Works appliance collection, where the refrigerant is removed on site.

City cost & eligibility
From $15 per appliance at the St. Charles County Recycle Works Central appliance collection, with the city Major Appliance Pickup at 20 dollars for an appliance with Freon and 15 dollars without. Households with a refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner or dehumidifier. The free bulky collection does not take these units, so the fee based city pickup or the county appliance collection is the route.
When & how
Book the city Major Appliance Pickup through the STP COLLECTS app by choosing Bulky and then the Major Appliance only option, or by calling 636-970-1456 option 1, and expect a weekday appointment. Recycle Works Central at 60 Triad South Drive in St. Charles takes the unit Monday through Saturday during its regular hours.
Get it ready
Deliver a refrigerator, air conditioner or freezer intact to the county site, because Freon is removed there by certified technicians, and do not put the unit in a bulky pile where the collection crew cannot take it. Leave the doors on a refrigerator as delivered unless the receiving facility asks otherwise, and keep the appliance out of the household trash cart entirely.

Televisions, monitors and electronics

Special rules apply

St. Peters splits electronics two ways. A television or monitor can go out as a bulky item, but only with the glass taped in a big X and kept in its own pile, and Recycle City no longer takes flat screens. The drop-off route is St. Charles County Recycle Works, which publishes a per item fee list.

City cost & eligibility
Recycle Works Central publishes the per item figures rather than one price: a CPU or a flat screen monitor is 5 dollars, a CRT monitor 20 dollars, a flat screen television of any size 15 dollars, a CRT television under 30 inches 30 dollars and 30 inches and over 40 dollars, with a wood console or rear projection television at 50 dollars and a floor copier at 50 cents per pound. Keyboards, mice, fax machines, scanners, laptops, typewriters, cell phones, DVD players, VCRs, stereos, clock radios, video game systems, Christmas light strands and cords carry no charge. Confirm the exact item at the counter before loading.
When & how
For a bulky collection, tape the glass and separate the pile, then schedule through the STP COLLECTS app, the city website or 636-970-1456. For drop-off, go to Recycle Works Central at 60 Triad South Drive in St. Charles, Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and pay by cash or check.
Get it ready
Tape a big X from corner to corner across the glass with duct tape and place the item in a pile on its own so the driver can see it, because the city states that glass items without tape are not collected. Wipe personal data before a computer leaves the house, and remember that Recycle City refuses electronics at its drop-off center and no longer accepts flat screen televisions.

Remodeling and construction debris

Not on the regular city route

Construction and demolition debris is refused in the trash cart and refused as a bulky item, and concrete is named on the bulky refusal list. A household project that produces concrete, dirt or stone moves through a roll-off container filled to no more than one third of its capacity.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes the roll-off restrictions but no container price, and walk-in disposal is charged by weight with a resident minimum and a general public minimum, so confirm the container size, the load and the current rate with Solid Waste at 636-970-1456 before ordering.
When & how
Order a roll-off container from the city for concrete, dirt or stone, which may not be filled above one third of the container capacity, or use walk-in trash disposal at Recycle City during its weekday and Saturday hours. Neither route accepts asbestos, and the walk-in tipping floor refuses sealed barrels or drums, compressed or inert gas bottles and hazardous material.
Get it ready
Keep construction material out of the trash cart and off a bulky pile, because both refuse it, and keep it out of the yard waste cart, which takes only material that grew in the yard. Never mix yard waste into a roll-off load with solid waste, since that stops collection until the load is corrected and adds a service fee.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named on the bulky list, although disassembled swing sets are. A treadmill or weight machine therefore rides on the general bulky rule, which means it has to fit the 3 cubic yard limit and be scheduled in advance.

City cost & eligibility
No exercise machine figure is published. A machine that fits the bulky limits rides the free scheduled collections, and anything larger needs a different route, so confirm the machine and the load with Solid Waste at 636-970-1456 before setting it out.
When & how
Schedule a bulky collection through the STP COLLECTS app, the city website or 636-970-1456, and put the machine out by 6:30 a.m. on the pickup day, keeping the whole pile inside the 3 cubic yard limit.
Get it ready
Break the machine down as far as it will come apart, as the city asks for swing sets to be disassembled, and take the console and any battery pack off first. Keep it 4 feet from obstructions and clear of utility lines, and keep it out of the recycling cart.

Bulky items and extra household waste

Accepted with preparation

The bulky program is the city's own route for anything too large for the cart. Every home gets up to two scheduled collections a year at no extra cost, picks its own date, and may set out bulky trash or bulky yard waste, not both at once. Space is first come, first served.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Two scheduled bulky collections a year at no extra cost for each St. Peters home, single-family or multi-family, with up to 3 cubic yards per collection. Bulk drop-off at Recycle City carries a fee with a Resident Privilege Card discount, and one extra 55-gallon contractor bag may sit at the curb for a separate charge.
When & how
Book the date through the STP COLLECTS app or the city website for a single-family home, or call 636-970-1456 for a multi-family building, and set items out no later than 6:30 a.m. on the pickup day and no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before.
Get it ready
Keep the load inside 3 cubic yards, about a pickup truck bed, stay at least 4 feet from cars, mailboxes and trees, and keep everything out from under utility lines. Brush and limbs go in a separate pile as their own collection and are never bundled, and appliances, glass, stoves and mowers all need the preparation the city asks for.

The handoff matters

Right item.
Right place.

Bulky collection is scheduled, and the date is yours to pick

Bulky collection in St. Peters is by appointment rather than by zone. A single-family home schedules through the STP COLLECTS app or the city website, a multi-family building calls 636-970-1456, and the household chooses the date it wants on a first-come, first-served basis. Each home gets up to two scheduled collections a year at no extra cost, with a ceiling of 3 cubic yards per collection, about a pickup truck bed, and anything over that amount is left behind. A household may set out bulky trash or bulky yard waste, but not both at the same time.

Bulky item collection page with the two free scheduled collections a year for every home, the STP COLLECTS app and phone scheduling, the 3 cubic yard limit, the accepted furniture, mattress, door, appliance without Freon, swing set, furnace and glass item lists, the taped glass requirement, the refused list and the fee based Major Appliance Pickup at 15 or 20 dollars

Four preparation steps decide whether the pile is collected

The city asks for specific preparation before a bulky load goes out. Stoves need their latched doors removed, and lawn mowers need the gasoline and oil drained. Glass items, including shower doors, windows, mirrors, television sets and computer monitors, need a big X of duct tape across the glass and a pile of their own, because the city states that glass without tape is not collected. Brush and limbs go in a separate pile as their own collection, are never bundled, and stay under 4 feet in length and 8 inches in diameter. Everything sits at least 4 feet from cars, mailboxes and trees and never under a utility line.

The trash cart has its own rules

Only the container the city furnishes may be used, and everything has to go inside it. The cart goes to the curb by 6:30 a.m. on collection day and no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before, with the wheels and the handle facing the home, and stays 4 feet from cars, mailboxes and streetlights. The lid may not stand open more than 12 inches, and the cart is stored out of sight from the street between collections. Sharps go in a heavy-duty puncture-resistant container with a teaspoon of bleach and a taped lid and never in a blue bag, and hot ashes wait in a metal container outside until they are fully cool.

Book the fee based major appliance pickup

A household with a major appliance to move on a weekday, including a refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner or dehumidifier that still holds refrigerant.

Cost & conditions
From $15 per major appliance on the curbside Major Appliance Pickup, at 20 dollars for an appliance with Freon. St. Peters households scheduling the separate Major Appliance Pickup service, which runs Monday through Friday and is booked through the STP COLLECTS app or by phone. The appliances are also accepted at the city walk-in drop off and at the county Recycle Works appliance collection.
Arrange it
Schedule through the STP COLLECTS app by choosing Bulky and then the Major Appliance only option, or call 636-970-1456 option 1 for an appointment. The pickup runs Monday through Friday, unlike the household chosen bulky dates.

This is a separate service from the free bulky program, so the charge applies even though a household still has its two free bulky dates. Air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers and dehumidifiers are the Freon examples and cost more than the appliances without Freon.

The roll-off page publishes the restrictions and the container sizes but no container price, so confirm the size, the delivery, the pull and the current rate with Solid Waste at 636-970-1456 before ordering.
Arrange it
Order a 20, 30 or 40 yard container from the city. A container for concrete, dirt or stone may be filled to no more than one third of its capacity, and yard waste needs a dedicated container of its own rather than being mixed with solid waste.

Tires, paint cans containing paint, engine oil and other petroleum-based flammable liquids, asbestos and sealed barrels, drums or compressed and inert gas bottles are prohibited. Overfilling, or mixing yard waste with solid waste, means the container is not picked up until the problem is corrected and adds a service fee. Logs over 20 inches have to be cut down and no log over 28 inches or stump is allowed.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Self haul in St. Peters runs through three city sites and one county site. The free bulky program is the first call for anything too large for the cart, because a household can schedule two collections a year and choose the date through the STP COLLECTS app or by phone at 636-970-1456, up to 3 cubic yards each. Recycle City at 131 Ecology Drive is the everyday drop-off, taking paper, cans, glass and plastic containers at no charge, and the same address runs walk-in trash disposal by weight during weekday and Saturday hours when a load will not fit a pile. Earth Centre at 115 Ecology Drive takes yard waste free from residents up to 10 cubic yards a calendar year against a Resident Privilege Card. Everything the city refuses that still has a recycling market goes to St. Charles County Recycle Works Central at 60 Triad South Drive in St. Charles, which takes electronics and appliances under a published per item fee list and household chemicals between May and September. Refrigerant appliances are the one group that needs care, because the free bulky route takes only appliances without Freon, so they go through the fee based city major appliance pickup or to the county facility, which removes the refrigerant on site. Bulky item collection page with the two free scheduled collections a year for every home, the STP COLLECTS app and phone scheduling, the 3 cubic yard limit, the accepted furniture, mattress, door, appliance without Freon, swing set, furnace and glass item lists, the taped glass requirement, the refused list and the fee based Major Appliance Pickup at 15 or 20 dollarsRecycle City drop-off center page with the Ecology Drive address, the daylight hours and the conflicting facility hours block, the accepted paper, container, glass and plastic list, and the refusals covering batteries, chemicals, electronics, light bulbs, styrofoam, tires, liquids and flat screen televisionsWalk-in trash disposal page with the weekday and Saturday hours, the cut off times, the resident and general public minimum fees, the per pound and per ton rates, the landfill tax, the Freon and hot tub surcharges and the prohibited items listEarth Centre yard waste disposal page with the Ecology Drive address, the free resident allowance of 10 cubic yards a calendar year against a Resident Privilege Card, the non-resident fees and the 2026 hoursSt.

Two published routes take it: the city Major Appliance Pickup, scheduled through the STP COLLECTS app or by phone at 636-970-1456 and priced higher for an appliance with Freon, and the St. Charles County Recycle Works appliance collection at 60 Triad South Drive, where refrigerators, air conditioners and freezers must arrive intact because the refrigerant is removed on site.Official guidance

Will St. Peters take a television at the curb?

Yes, but only as a prepared bulky item. Television sets and computer monitors are on the bulky accepted list when the glass is duct-taped with a big X and the item sits in a separate pile, and the city states that glass without tape is not collected.
