The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Burlington runs its own curbside service rather than leaving trash to private haulers. One black 95 gallon cart comes with the account, household garbage is collected once a week on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday route, and the same monthly bill covers a bulk route that takes furniture, mattresses, rolled carpet and padding, appliances, metals and yard brush. Bulk material rides a convenience schedule on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday rather than a guaranteed day, so a couch or a mattress goes out beside the cart on the regular trash day and comes off the street when the bulk truck reaches the street. The city draws hard lines: scrap tires, electronics such as computers and televisions, pallets, hazardous or liquid waste, used oil and antifreeze, lead acid batteries and fluorescent lights are banned landfill items and are not collected, abandoned banned items left at the curb can draw a fee, and a load larger than a standard pickup truck bed is treated as excessive and billed. Electronics have their own routes, with a tagged curbside option on the trash day, two free resident collection events a year at the Public Works parking lot, and the Alamance County Landfill convenience center, which also takes bagged garbage, appliances, recyclables and weighed loads of construction debris, yard waste, metal and tires.

Couches, sofas and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is a named bulk item, so a couch, chair or table goes out beside the cart on the regular trash day and comes off the street on the bulk route's convenience schedule.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. City residential and small business accounts inside the monthly solid waste fee of $18.70, for bulk material at the curb by 7am on the collection day; bulk collection is not offered to businesses or institutions, and a load above a standard pickup truck bed is treated as excessive and billed.
When & how
Put the furniture at the curb by 7am on the regular trash day. Bulk trucks run Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday on a convenience schedule rather than on the trash truck's route, so the piece may sit for part of the day and may need more than one trip if the pile is large.
Get it ready
Collect the piece so the bulk truck can reach it, keep it out of the black cart and away from the cart, the recycling cart and mailboxes, and leave at least five feet of clearance around the containers. Separate metals and brush from general junk, because the bulk trucks collect white goods, large junk and yard brush with different equipment.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

A mattress is a named bulk item in Burlington and goes out beside the cart on the regular trash day, and the county landfill prices one per item if a household would rather haul it.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. City residential and small business accounts inside the monthly solid waste fee of $18.70, for a mattress at the curb by 7am on the collection day; a self-hauled mattress costs $5.00 and a box spring $3.00 at the Alamance County Landfill convenience center.
When & how
Set the mattress out by 7am on the regular trash day and leave it for the bulk truck, which runs Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. A household that would rather not wait can take the mattress to the convenience center at the landfill, which opens Monday to Friday 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, Saturday 7:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sunday 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress and box spring apart so each one can be lifted by the crew, take the frame, headboard and bedding off because they are separate loads, and keep it out of the black cart, which is only for household garbage.

Appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

Appliances and white goods are named bulk items and the bulk trucks collect white goods separately from general junk, so a washer, dryer or stove goes out on the regular trash day.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. City residential and small business accounts inside the monthly solid waste fee of $18.70, for an appliance at the curb by 7am on the collection day; the Alamance County Landfill convenience center also takes appliances from households that self-haul.
When & how
Put the appliance at the curb by 7am on the regular trash day, or take it to the convenience center at the landfill during its opening hours if you would rather not wait for the bulk truck.
Get it ready
Take the doors off, pull the loose cords, keep the appliance out of the black cart, which refuses metal and building materials, and keep it clear of the cart and the recycling cart so the automated arms have room.

Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners

Special rules apply

A unit holding refrigerant shares the appliance route, but no city or county page states how the refrigerant is handled, so the charge question has to be settled before the unit goes out.

City cost & eligibility
Burlington names appliances and white goods among its bulk items and the county sends appliances to its convenience center, but neither body states whether a unit holding refrigerant needs the charge removed or the unit tagged first, and no local removal price is published. Confirm the requirement with the Solid Waste Division at 336-222-5111 or the landfill at (336) 376-8902 before the refrigerator or air conditioner leaves the house.
When & how
Call the city or the landfill first, then either put the unit out with the bulk items by 7am on the regular trash day or take it to the convenience center at the landfill during its opening hours.
Get it ready
Empty and clean the unit, take the doors off, keep the cord with the appliance, and leave the refrigerant sealed until someone confirms who is allowed to handle it, because the appliance acceptance does not settle that question on its own.

Televisions and monitors

Special rules apply

A television cannot go in the trash and is a banned landfill item on the bulk route, so the set moves through the tagged curbside option, a free resident event or the county convenience center.

City cost & eligibility
From $5 per television or computer monitor at the Alamance County Landfill convenience center, where the county fee schedule prices both at $5.00 each. Household e-waste taken to the convenience center on Austin Quarter Road; Burlington also tags e-waste left at the curb on the regular trash day at $15.00 per item on the water bill, and runs free resident-only collection events twice a year.
When & how
Choose the route that suits the week. The city tags e-waste at the curb on the regular trash day for a per item charge, the free resident events at 234 E. Summit Avenue ran on Saturday, February 7, 2026 and Saturday, October 3, 2026 from 9:00am to 2:00pm, and the convenience center opens Monday to Friday 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, Saturday 7:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sunday 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
Get it ready
Keep the set whole and dry, wipe anything that stores data, keep the remote and cords with it, and never put a television in the black cart or in a bulk pile, because e-waste is a banned landfill item and the bulk crew will leave it.

Computers and household electronics

Special rules apply

Computers, printers and small electronics are under the state e-waste ban, so they use the tagged curbside option, the free resident events or the county convenience center.

City cost & eligibility
The routes carry different charges, so confirm which one you are using. The city's curbside e-waste tag costs $15.00 per item on the water bill, the two resident collection events are free, and the Alamance County Landfill convenience center applies a $42 per ton tipping fee for electronic waste while its fee schedule prices televisions and computer monitors at $5.00 each. Retail and manufacturer programs are also listed by both the city and the county.
When & how
Use the free resident events when one is scheduled, use the curbside tag on your regular trash day, or take the item to the convenience center at the landfill during its opening hours, and call the county at (336) 376-8902 if the item is unusual.
Get it ready
Wipe stored data from drives, laptops and phones before anything leaves the house, keep power supplies and cables with the device, and keep electronics out of the black cart, the recycling cart and any bulk pile, because all three refuse them.

Construction and remodeling debris

Special rules apply

Small amounts of building material ride the bulk route up to two 32-gallon containers, and anything larger goes by weight across the county landfill scales.

City cost & eligibility
From $44 per ton for construction and demolition material at the Alamance County Landfill scales, where mixed construction and demolition, wood, drywall and sheetrock, roofing and shingles, bricks and concrete are all priced at $44.00 per ton and yard waste at $32.00 per ton. Self-haul across the scales during scale hours, which are Monday to Friday 7:00 am to 4:30 pm and Saturday 7:00 am to 12:00 pm, with a $5.00 scale minimum; the city bulk route takes building materials and lumber only up to two 32-gallon containers and refuses anything larger.
When & how
For small amounts, put the material out with the bulk items by 7am on the regular trash day and keep it within two 32-gallon containers. For a larger load, take it to the landfill at 2701 Austin Quarter Road in Graham during scale hours and expect the load to be weighed.
Get it ready
Keep construction material out of the black cart, which refuses wood and building materials, keep it out of the recycling cart, and separate concrete, wood and drywall only as far as the landfill asks at the gate, because each category is weighed and priced by the ton.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

No Burlington or Alamance County list names a treadmill or weight machine, so the item rides the general bulk rule and the question is whether the crew can handle it at the curb.

City cost & eligibility
Exercise equipment appears on no retained city or county list, so the route stays a confirm instruction rather than an assumed item. A machine that can be lifted like other large junk fits the bulk route, which is inside the monthly solid waste fee, and an item too large for the collection vehicle is on the city's not collected list, so call the Solid Waste Division at 336-222-5111 before the machine goes out.
When & how
Confirm the answer first, then either put the machine at the curb by 7am on the regular trash day with the bulk items or arrange another route if the crew says it is too large for the truck.
Get it ready
Strip the console and any loose weights so the frame is lighter, fold the deck where the maker allows it, and keep the machine out of the black cart, which only takes household garbage.

Bulk waste and household cleanouts

Accepted with preparation

Bulk waste is part of the curbside service, collected Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday on a convenience schedule, with a hard banned item list and an excessive load fee.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. City residential and small business accounts inside the monthly solid waste fee of $18.70, for bulk material at the curb by 7am on the collection day; a load above a standard pickup truck bed is treated as excessive and draws a minimum $75 fee, with another $75 for each additional landfill trip.
When & how
Put the bulk material at the curb by 7am on your regular trash day. The bulk trucks run Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday on a convenience schedule, and a pile may take more than one trip if it is large.
Get it ready
Separate metals, brush and general junk because the trucks collect them separately, keep the pile clear of the black cart, the recycling cart and mailboxes, and leave out everything on the banned landfill list, including tires, electronics, pallets, used oil, antifreeze, lead acid batteries and fluorescent lights. Bulk collection is not available to businesses or institutions.

Right item.

One cart, one weekly day, and a 7am set out

Each Burlington residential customer gets one black 95 gallon roll out container for household garbage, collected once a week on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday route with no Wednesday collection. The cart goes to the curb by 7:00 am with five feet of clearance on each side and fifteen feet above, and comes back in by 7:00 pm. The lid arrows face the street so the automated arms can grip the container, and the black cart refuses recyclables, yard waste, liquids, dirt, masonry, rock, metal, wood, building materials, ashes, contractor waste, fluorescent tubes, electronic waste and hazardous waste. In congested areas such as the central business district, rear packer trucks collect from containers no larger than 32 gallons, and only clear plastic bags are collected without a permanent container.

Bulk waste rides a separate truck on a convenience schedule

Furniture, mattresses, rolled carpet and padding, appliances, metals, bulk limbs and yard waste are bulk items, and they do not ride the garbage truck. Bulk material goes out by 7am on the regular trash day and is collected Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday on a convenience schedule rather than a guaranteed same day pickup, and the trucks collect white goods, large junk and yard brush separately, so the pile has to be separated by content. A large pile may need more than one trip. Bulk collection is not offered to businesses or institutions.

Banned landfill items and oversized loads are the two ways a set out goes wrong

Tires, electronics such as computer equipment and televisions, wooden pallets, hazardous and liquid waste, used oil, oil filters, antifreeze, lead acid batteries, fluorescent lights, mercury thermostats, ABC beverage containers, regulated medical waste and oyster shells are banned landfill items and will not be picked up; an abandoned banned item left at the curb may be collected and billed. Items too large for the truck, building materials and lumber above two 32-gallon containers, logs and stumps, closed containers and automobile parts are also refused. Since August 19, 2026, bulk waste above a standard pickup truck bed load is treated as excessive and draws a minimum fee, with another fee for each additional landfill trip.

Book a private hauler for what the city route will not take

A business, institution, landlord or household with an oversized pile, a contractor load or banned material that the city's residential bulk route will not collect.

Cost & conditions
Burlington publishes no rate for private hauling, and the city route itself is not available to businesses or institutions, so the price depends on the hauler, the material and the volume. Ask for a quote before the load is set out.
Arrange it
Arrange the pickup directly with a licensed hauler, and keep the material off the right of way until the hauler arrives so a banned item is not left for the city crew to tag.

The city will not collect from businesses or institutions, and the material still has to reach a permitted disposal site, so confirm where the hauler is taking the load.

Self hauling in Burlington means the Alamance County Landfill at 2701 Austin Quarter Road in Graham. The convenience center takes bagged household garbage by the bag, recyclables at no charge, and single items such as a mattress, a box spring or a television, and it is cash only. Anything large or bulky has to go across the scales during scale hours, Monday to Friday 7:00 am to 4:30 pm and Saturday 7:00 am to 12:00 pm, where garbage, construction and demolition debris, wood, drywall, roofing, bricks, concrete and metal, yard waste and tires are priced by the ton with a minimum load charge. Homeowners may bring five off the rim tires free, and used oil is limited to five gallons with five filters. Household hazardous waste has a year round drop-off for used oil, oil filters, antifreeze, cooking oil, lead acid batteries and electronic waste, and the landfill also sponsors two resident collection events a year for the rest. How do I get a couch taken away in Burlington?

Put it at the curb by 7am on your regular trash day. Household furniture is a named bulk item in Burlington, and bulk material is collected by a separate truck on a convenience schedule Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday rather than on the garbage route. Metals, brush and general junk are meant to be separated because the bulk trucks handle them with different equipment.Official guidance

Where does a mattress go in Burlington?

A mattress is a named bulk item, so it goes to the curb by 7am on your regular trash day and is picked up by the bulk truck that runs Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. A household that would rather haul it is priced per item at the Alamance County Landfill convenience center, which also takes box springs, and the county convenience center is cash only.Official guidance

Will Burlington take a washer or a stove?

Yes. Appliances and white goods are named bulk items in Burlington, and the bulk trucks collect white goods on a separate pass from general junk, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Put the appliance at the curb by 7am on the regular trash day, or take it to the Alamance County Landfill convenience center if you would rather haul it yourself.Official guidance

Where does a television go in Burlington?

Not in the trash and not in a bulk pile, because North Carolina's e-waste ban makes a television a banned landfill item and Burlington's bulk crew will not pick it up. The city offers a tagged curbside pickup on the regular trash day for a per item charge on the water bill, two free collection events a year at the Public Works parking lot on Summit Avenue, and the Alamance County Landfill convenience center as the year round drop-off.Official guidance

Do I need to call for a bulk pickup in Burlington?

No. Bulk waste is part of the curbside service, so furniture, mattresses, carpet, appliances, metals, limbs and yard waste go out beside the cart on your regular trash day and are collected by a separate truck on a convenience schedule Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. What you do have to watch is the banned landfill list, because tires, electronics, pallets, used oil, antifreeze, batteries and fluorescent lights will be left behind, and a load larger than a pickup truck bed is billed as excessive.Official guidance

Who collects trash in Burlington?

The City of Burlington collects it. The Solid Waste Division runs weekly household garbage, yard waste and bulk waste collection, the account comes with one black 95 gallon roll out container, and the service is billed on the monthly water and sewer statement. Collection days are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday depending on the address, and there is no Wednesday collection. Household questions go to the division at 336-222-5111.Official guidance

What counts as bulk waste in Burlington?

Furniture, mattresses, rolled carpet and padding, appliances, metals, bulk limbs and yard waste are the named bulk items. They go out by 7am on the regular trash day and are collected by a separate truck on a convenience schedule Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and the trucks collect white goods, large junk and yard brush separately, so the pile should be separated by content. What you cannot count on is anything on the banned landfill list, including tires, electronics, pallets, used oil, antifreeze, batteries and fluorescent lights.Official guidance

When does a bulk pile cost extra?

Since August 19, 2026, bulk waste above the equivalent of a standard pickup truck bed load counts as excessive. The city applies a minimum fee to the first excess load and another fee for each additional trip to the landfill that the material requires, and the total is assessed on the adopted fee schedule by the quantity collected. A normal set out of furniture, a mattress, an appliance or a few bags does not trigger it.Official guidance

What happens to electronics and televisions in Burlington?

They cannot go in the trash or a bulk pile, because North Carolina's e-waste ban keeps televisions, computers and similar devices out of the landfill. Burlington tags e-waste left at the curb on the regular trash day and bills a per item charge to the water account, runs free collection events for residents in the Public Works parking lot on Summit Avenue, and points households to the Alamance County Landfill convenience center, which takes appliances as well as electronics.Official guidance

Does the city take limbs, brush and stumps?

Limbs and brush ride the bulk route with furniture and other large junk, collected separately by a knuckle boom truck on the convenience schedule Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and they go out by 7am on the regular trash day. Logs and stumps are on the not collected list, so a stump has to be handled separately, and brush has to be separated from general junk because the trucks handle it with different equipment.Official guidance
