Appliances are accepted at the Mecklenburg County full-service centers, which name stoves, refrigerators, washers, dryers and water heaters, and list white goods such as stoves and empty refrigerators and freezers as a separate stream.
The handoff matters
Mecklenburg County residents display a free blue entry sticker at the full-service centers and show proof of residence such as a driver's license. Without a sticker the load is charged at the out of county category, and a non-county resident can buy an annual sticker. Payment is by debit card or a major credit card except American Express, and the centers take no cash and no checks.

Batteries, including lithium, lithium-ion and tool batteries, also go there rather than in the trash. Ammunition, explosives, pharmaceuticals and smoke detectors are not accepted, and the county says smoke detectors belong in the regular trash.
