When & how
Place the mattress on the curb by 7 a.m. on your regular collection day, no earlier than 6 p.m. the day before.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and clear of wires, low branches and mailboxes so the collection crew can reach it. During a free excess trash week the mattress still has to go out on your regularly scheduled collection day.
Garbage, bulky items and yard waste go to the curb by 7 a.m. on the collection day and may be set out after 6 p.m. the day before. Place the cart a few inches from the curb and never in the street, with the handle facing your house and the serial number facing the street, and bring it back in by midnight, since city ordinance requires carts to be stored behind the house.
Bulky pickup is a paid service with two free weeks
The city charges excess household trash by weight band on the bulky collection, and each year two weeks collect that material at no charge, but only on the resident's regularly scheduled collection day. Tires, electronics and appliance collection keep their own charges even during the free weeks.
Bag clothing and other small items, bag sheetrock and insulation, and cut floor covering into four foot lengths, rolled and tied. Glass has to go out unbroken with duct tape forming an X from corner to corner, and yard waste, recyclables and the refused list stay out of the bulky pile.

Franklin Blvd, St. Michael's Thrift Store at 1111 S. York St on 704-864-8646, and Believe in Abilities at 901 S. Chester St on 704-810-9889. Some organizations collect reusable items from the home.
Each outlet sets its own acceptance and hours, and the city notes the list is not complete, so a donation is not a substitute for a scheduled pickup when the item is unusable.
Gastonia's self-haul network is the county's. The Gaston County Landfill at 3155 Philadelphia Church Road in Dallas takes household and commercial waste, construction and demolition debris and yard waste with a half ton minimum on each per ton rate, and it accepts electronic equipment during business hours. Electronics elsewhere in the county go to every recycling centre except the Farmers Market and Duke Street, and the convenience sites run on GarbCards bought in advance from a vendor rather than cash, with televisions, monitors and mattresses priced by card and CPUs, peripherals and tires off the rim free. Household hazardous products wait for one of the four county events in 2026 at 200 Leisure Lane in Dallas, though fluorescent bulbs and latex paint can be taken to the landfill by appointment and batteries, motor oil and oil filters have convenience site routes of their own. GarbCards must be used instead of cash and have to be bought from a vendor before arrival. Electric appliances such as vacuum cleaners, irons, radios and kitchen appliances are not accepted as electronics, and the county notes that the New Hope centre is being rebuilt while Duke Street stays open for household trash. Container status can be checked through the landfill convenience site application before a trip.
