Cost & conditions
A single large bulky item such as a sofa, chair, table or mattress set is free with the free blue resident entry sticker, a bulky load under three cubic yards is $15 per unit, construction and demolition material is $25 per unit, and a weighed load runs $65 per ton with a $22 minimum for bulky waste and a $26 minimum for construction material. Items are priced separately: computers other than laptops $10, laptops free, tires free for the first five and then per tire, and household hazardous waste free to county residents.
Arrange it
Get the free blue resident entry sticker from the fee booth at Foxhole, Hickory Grove, North Mecklenburg or Compost Central, then use whichever center suits the load. The town lists four sites open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., including 8007 Pence Road in Charlotte as the closest to Matthews.
Mecklenburg County households only, and no business material is accepted with household hazardous waste. Residential customers are limited to two televisions per visit each month, a maximum of 15 automotive or light truck tires is accepted per load without prior approval, a full-service site takes no more than 14 cubic yards with larger loads going to the Foxhole Landfill, and uncovered loads may have fees raised by 50 percent.
Curbside bulk pickup in Matthews is an on-call service that Waste Pro schedules on the household's trash day after payment, with furniture, mattress sets and appliances priced by the item. Data erasure and certified data destruction are not included in Dropcurb removal. Back up the information you need, then follow the manufacturer’s sign-out and reset instructions before pickup. If a device cannot be erased or contains sensitive business information, arrange suitable data handling before giving it away. Who collects garbage and bulk items in Matthews?+
Waste Pro collects for the whole town under a contract that started in July 2023: garbage once a week, recycling every other week on the regular pickup day, yard waste weekly, and bulk waste or white goods on call. Bulk pickups have to be scheduled and paid for with Waste Pro at 980-325-3640, and a broken or additional cart also goes through the company. Do I need a sticker to use the Mecklenburg County centers?+
Yes. Every residential vehicle displays an entry sticker, and the blue rectangle sticker is free to Mecklenburg County residents and does not expire. It is issued at the cashier booth at each full-service center. A vehicle without a sticker is charged at the out-of-county rate, which is an annual badge.
