Treadmill, walking pad or commercial model?
Household treadmill includes folding home models with a tall console. Choose Walking pad for a compact under-desk model, or Commercial treadmill for a large gym machine. All equipment opens those choices.
An exercise bike, elliptical or rower
Spin, upright, recumbent and air bikes all use Exercise bike, including Peloton and other brands. One elliptical includes its connected base, handles and pedals. Rowing machines and Pilates reformers have their own choices.
Weights, racks and benches
Add together the pounds of loose dumbbells, kettlebells, plates and barbells. Free weights are priced in 10 lb units, rounding the combined weight up. For example, 25 lb uses three units. Add a stand, rack or bench separately if it is going too.

Exercise equipment is not named on the Recycling Center fee list, so a treadmill or weight machine is a question for the department rather than an assumed price. The curbside rotation has a week for upholstered furniture and mixed materials and a week for appliances and scrap metal, which between them cover most machines.
City cost & eligibility
No exercise machine price is published, so confirm the item and the week with Public Works on 603-427-1530 before paying. A metal framed machine is most likely to fall in the appliance and scrap metal week, while a mixed material machine fits the upholstered furniture and mixed materials week, but the city publishes no rule naming exercise equipment.
When & how
Call Public Works on 603-427-1530 to confirm the week, which will be either the first week for upholstered furniture and mixed materials or the second week for appliances and scrap metal depending on how the machine is built, and put the piece out between 7:00 p.m. the day before and 6:00 a.m. on the pickup day.
Get it ready
Strip the machine down as far as it will come apart and take the console off the frame so it can be handled on the route. Keep loose batteries and any oil or chemical out of the pile, since batteries and oil have their own drop-off routes at the Recycling Center, and keep the piece out of the recycling bin.
The curbside bulky weeks are set by material rather than by address. The first week takes upholstered furniture and mixed materials, the second takes appliances and scrap metal including refrigerators and Freon units, the third takes tires, televisions, computers and electronics, and the fourth takes wood furniture, wood scraps, painted or treated wood and pallets. A booking is placed in the week that matches the item, and nothing goes to the curb before Public Works has scheduled it.
Pay before the gate or the pickup, and never in cash
Both bulky routes are paid up front. At the Recycling Center the attendant takes a credit card with a processing fee or a check, and the center does not accept cash, while an online payment before drop-off needs the receipt printed and shown at the gate. For a curbside pickup the item fee is paid through the portal with the $10 pickup fee added and the pickup location entered, and Public Works then schedules the date on 603-427-1530.

Book a curbside bulky pickup

From $10 for the curbside bulky pickup fee of $10 on top of the disposal cost of each item, where a mattress, box spring, washer, dryer, dishwasher, upholstered furniture, wood furniture, gas grill or 20 pound propane tank adds $5, a tire adds $7, a cooking range or electronics item adds $10, a refrigerator or Freon unit adds $20 and clean wood adds $15 or $25 by volume. Portsmouth residents on the city collection route, paid through the payment portal before scheduling; a household served by a private trash hauler is not eligible for curbside pickup and has to use the Recycling Center instead.
Arrange it
Pay the item fee and the pickup fee through the payment portal, check the schedule pickup box and enter the pickup location, then call Public Works on 603-427-1530 to fix the date. The pickup falls in the rotation week for that material, and the item goes out between 7:00 p.m. the day before and 6:00 a.m. on the day.
Nothing goes to the curb without a booking, because unscheduled bulky waste is not collected. The item has to be inside the weekly 300 gallon property limit, kept separate from the regular trash, and matched to the right week of the rotation. Payment is by card or check rather than cash, and a household on a private hauler has no curbside option at all.

Bulky waste on the published per item list, covering mattresses and box springs, appliances including refrigerators and Freon units, electronics, tires, upholstered and wood furniture, gas grills and propane tanks of 20 pounds or larger, cooking ranges and clean wood by volume. Several specialty items are free for residents: antifreeze, batteries, clothing, cooking oil and vegetable oil, eyeglasses, fluorescent light bulbs, food waste, oil and oil filters, and empty one pound propane tanks or cylinders. Paper, cardboard, cartons, cans, glass and plastic bottles are recycled here as well.
Cash is not accepted, so payment is by credit card with a minimum processing fee or by check, and an online payment has to be made before drop-off with the receipt shown at the gate.
