The local disposal guide
Edison Township collects household garbage and single stream recycling itself in the municipal collection areas and tells residents in private collection areas to deal with their own haulers. Bulk material never rides the regular truck. White goods, metal and large bulky items are arranged through the public works office at 732-248-7288, and nothing may be put at the kerb until that call has produced a confirmation number. Twice a year the township also runs a clean-up week by recycling section, one set of Saturdays in the spring and one in the autumn, and those weeks carry a long accepted list that includes furniture, mattresses sealed in plastic, washers, dryers, microwaves, electronics and refrigerators with the doors removed. Three things are refused everywhere and at all times: construction and demolition material, paint and household hazardous waste, and anything the resident did not put in the supplied container on a regular week. Electronics also go to the township recycling centre on New Durham Road, which takes residents only, in a residential vehicle.

The handoff matters
Edison garbage collection follows the municipal collection areas, and residents in private collection areas deal with their own hauler. Only the supplied containers are acceptable, and a cardboard, paper or plywood drum used as a container is itself classified as garbage and taken away. The stream is household waste only: building and demolition material such as garage doors, shingles and construction lumber is refused, along with textiles, fixtures, trees, earth or stone, refuse and industrial waste, and dirt, stone, wood, ashes, sawdust and metal must not go into a garbage can. Recyclables belong in the separate recycling container, and an obstructed can is not collected.

The recycling regulations send residents to the public works office at 732-248-7288 to arrange the pickup, or to the township citizen service request form, and the garbage regulations make the order of operations explicit: do not put the items out until the call has been made, because material placed at the kerb before a confirmation number is received will not be collected and its disposal becomes the homeowner's responsibility. Leaves, lawn and garden refuse, grass clippings, brush and tree limbs, hazardous material, heavy material and rugs are all excluded from regular collection days as well.

Collections begin at 6:00 A.M., and material has to be at the kerb before that and no sooner than 48 hours ahead of the collection date. The accepted list covers furniture, box springs and mattresses wrapped and sealed in plastic, metals, up to four interior doors, up to two vinyl or metal window frames without glass, one each of a toilet, tank and metal tub with the tank separated, carpet limited to one room or ten rolls under 5 feet and 50 pounds, up to four sections of fencing, washers, dryers, microwaves, electronics including televisions, printers and computers, wrapped glass under 50 pounds and a refrigerator with the doors removed. Branches, unwrapped bedding, pallets, construction material, uninspected hot water heaters, recyclables, paint, tires, glass over 50 pounds and textiles are refused.

Two ways. The township accepts sofas, chairs and tables during its spring and fall clean-up weeks, which run by recycling section on set Saturdays, and it also takes large bulky items through a special pick-up booked at 732-248-7288. Furniture never goes out on a regular garbage day, bulk items are excluded from those days, and nothing may be placed at the kerb before a special pick-up confirmation number has been issued.Official guidance
It has to be wrapped and sealed in plastic. The township clean-up lists accept box springs and mattresses wrapped and sealed in plastic and put unwrapped mattresses and box springs on the unacceptable list, so an uncovered mattress will be left where it stands. Set the wrapped bedding out for the clean-up week that matches the recycling section, no sooner than 48 hours before and before 6:00 A.M. on the collection day, or book the special pick-up line at 732-248-7288.Official guidance
By booking a special pick-up at 732-248-7288, which the township recycling page names for white goods, metal and large bulky items, or by using the spring and fall clean-up weeks, which accept washers, dryers and microwaves and a refrigerator with the doors removed. An uninspected hot water heater is refused at the clean-up, metal must not be put in a garbage can, and nothing goes out before the special pick-up confirmation number is issued.Official guidance
To the township recycling centre at 745 New Durham Road, which takes electronics including computers, printers and monitors and opens Monday to Saturday from 6:30 AM to 2:00 PM, or into the spring and fall clean-up weeks, which list televisions with printers and computers among the accepted electronics. The centre asks for proof of residency such as a driver's licence or utility bill and accepts material only in a residential vehicle, and no fee is published for either route.Official guidance
Book it or wait for a clean-up week. Bulk items are not picked up on regular collection days, so large household material goes through a special pick-up arranged at 732-248-7288 with a confirmation number issued before anything is placed at the kerb, or through the spring and fall clean-up weeks for the recycling section. The clean-up weeks accept a long list that includes furniture, wrapped mattresses, metals, carpet, fencing and appliances but refuse pallets, textiles, branches, recyclables, paint, tires and construction material.Official guidance
Edison Township public works collects household garbage and single stream recycling in the municipal collection areas, and residents in private collection areas are told to contact their own haulers for both schedules and questions. Only supplied containers are acceptable, recyclables must be kept in a separate container and out of the garbage, and the township is divided into 10 recycling sections collected every other week.Official guidance
Because the township explicitly does not collect bulk items on regular collection days, and because the garbage rules say nothing may be placed at the kerb before a special pick-up is arranged. Book through the public works office at 732-248-7288, wait for the confirmation number, and only then put the material out, because anything set out ahead of that confirmation is not collected and its disposal becomes the homeowner's responsibility.Official guidance
The clean-up weeks run by recycling section on assigned Saturdays with collection starting at 6:00 A.M., and material has to be out before that and no sooner than 48 hours ahead. The quantity limits are four interior doors, two vinyl or metal window frames without glass, one each of a toilet, tank and metal tub with the tank separated, carpet limited to one room or ten rolls under 5 feet and 50 pounds, four sections of fencing, and wrapped glass under 50 pounds. Mattresses must be wrapped and sealed in plastic, refrigerators must have the doors removed, and branches, pallets, construction material, textiles, recyclables, paint, tires and uninspected hot water heaters are refused.Official guidance
Construction and demolition material is refused on every route at any time, and the garbage rules name garage doors, shingles and construction lumber as examples, with dirt, stone, wood, ashes, sawdust and metal banned from garbage cans too. Paint and other household hazardous waste are refused in the garbage, in the clean-up weeks and at the recycling centre, tires are refused in the clean-up weeks, and textiles and pallets are refused as well.Official guidance
