The local disposal guide
Toms River collects garbage and single-stream recycling with its own crews, and bulky material is scheduled rather than set out with the trash. Each household may request one bulk collection a month, split into a metal pickup for appliances, railings, poles and bikes and a non-metal pickup for furniture, carpet and mattresses, with carpet cut into four foot strips, rolled and tied. Freon appliances need certification from a licensed technician before they go out. Everything the curb does not take has a township destination instead: the Recycling Convenience Center at 1672 Church Road takes electronics, furniture, paint, batteries, tires off rims and small amounts of construction debris from residents, while hazardous products and larger demolition loads leave through Ocean County.

Toms River schedules bulky pickups rather than collecting them with the trash. A household may request one bulk collection a month for items that do not fit the robo can, and furniture is on the non-metal list, where it does not have to be cut up. Furniture is also accepted at the Recycling Convenience Center.
Mattresses are named on the township's non-metal bulk list, so they go out on the monthly scheduled collection. The Recycling Convenience Center's accepted list does not name mattresses, so the scheduled pickup is the published route.
Metal appliances ride the separate metal collection, which also takes wrought iron railings, metal poles and bikes. A federal rule requires freon removal from refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers by a licensed service company with a sticker on the appliance, and newer plastic body dishwashers go out as non-metal bulk instead.
Electronics go to the township's Recycling Convenience Center rather than the curb. The accepted list is all televisions, computer towers, laptops, tablets and computer monitors of every size and type, dropped off year round with identification proving Toms River residency.
The township does not collect construction or demolition debris at the curb. Residents may bring no more than two 35 gallon containers of it to the Recycling Convenience Center twice a month, and larger quantities go to the Ocean County Landfill in Manchester Township.
Exercise equipment is not named on either bulk list. The metal route names appliances, railings, poles and bikes and the non-metal route names furniture, carpet and mattresses, so a treadmill or weight machine has to be confirmed with the township before it goes out.
Bulky material is scheduled in Toms River rather than set out with the garbage. Each household may request one bulk collection a month for items that do not fit the robo can, with metal and non-metal handled as separate pickups, and the township does not collect move outs or excessive volumes.
Tires are taken off the rim at the township's Recycling Convenience Center, limited to four per monthly visit and limited to car and light truck tires. The centre asks that the tire be separated from the rim before it is brought in.
Hazardous products leave through Ocean County rather than the township. The county runs the hazardous material programme, registration is required, and the township's partial accepted list covers automotive aerosols, driveway sealer, mineral spirits, kerosene, antifreeze, gasoline, pesticides, stains and varnishes and mercury thermometers.
The handoff matters
Garbage, recyclables and bulky items go to the curb by 6:30 a.m. on the collection day, and empty containers come back in by 9 p.m. that same day. Non-automated addresses may set containers out after 7 p.m. the night before, and robo containers belong in the roadway with the wheels and hinge facing the house, four feet clear of anything else and nothing on top.
Sanitation Division collection regulations and container rulesBulk and metal collection requests, limits and preparation rulesA household requests one bulk collection a month by phone, choosing the metal or the non-metal pickup, and the items go out by 6:30 a.m. on the day after the normal weekly sanitation collection. Move outs and excessive volumes are not collected and are referred to a private removal service.
Bulk and metal collection requests, limits and preparation rulesFederal law requires the freon to be removed from air conditioners, refrigerators and dehumidifiers by a licensed service company, and the appliance must carry the sticker that proves it. A plastic body dishwasher is collected as non-metal bulk instead of metal.
