Appliances and other white goods, including refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, water heaters and tires, go to the curb in limited quantities after the same 24 hour call to the Department of General Services.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. No per item charge applies, because curb collection is covered by the annual waste collection fee billed to residential properties of four units or less. The programme serves residential properties of four units or less; larger buildings and commercial properties arrange private collection.

Call the Department of General Services at (518) 427-7480 at least 24 hours before your collection day, during normal business hours Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., then set the unit at the curb before 12:01 a.m. on the collection day.
Get it ready
Remove the doors from a refrigerator or freezer before it goes out, as New York State law requires and as the city states for a washing machine too. Drain all fluids from a lawn mower or snow blower, and empty and defrost a refrigerator or freezer. The acceptable white goods list also includes air conditioners, dehumidifiers, dishwashers, clothes dryers, furnaces, hot water tanks, microwave ovens, stoves, radiators, cast iron tubs and cast iron sinks.
Bulk trash and white goods are collected in limited quantities, but only after the Department of General Services is told about them at (518) 427-7480 at least 24 hours before the collection day. The line is answered Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Keep each load to something one person can manage and load within four trips, because an excessive pile can be billed and fined.
Trash, recycling and bulky items go to the curb before 12:01 a.m. on the collection day and never before 4:30 p.m. the day before. Bagged waste goes in metal or plastic containers with a lid and no more than 50 gallons, and containers may not be stored in public view when they are not at the curb. Keep electronics and hazardous products out of every pile
Electronics and household hazardous waste are not accepted at the curb, and New York State law bars electronics from the trash and from landfills. Take electronics to the Department of General Services at 1 Richard J. Conners Blvd. with identification, and keep paint, solvents, gasoline, pool chemicals, batteries and mercury items out of the trash, the recycling bin and any bulky pile.

Most of Albany's bulky material does not need a trip, because furniture, appliances and other white goods are collected at the curb once the Department of General Services is called at least 24 hours ahead, and mattresses are collected on a scheduled pickup after they are wrapped. What cannot go to the curb is electronics, which go to the Department of General Services at 1 Richard J. Conners Blvd. with identification, and household hazardous waste, which the city normally takes at nine free events a year at the Rapp Road landfill but which is closed for the rest of 2026. While the events are closed, PaintCare locations take unused paints, stains, sealers and deck coatings, and most home improvement stores take rechargeable batteries and intact compact fluorescent bulbs at their checkout bins.
