The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Albany collects its own household waste for residential properties of four units or less and pays for the service through an annual waste collection fee on the property tax bill. Bulk trash such as furniture, mattresses and toilets can go to the curb in limited quantities, and bulky recyclables or white goods such as refrigerators, air conditioners, water heaters and tires can go out too, but both need a call to the Department of General Services at least 24 hours before the collection day. Mattresses are scheduled separately through the Department of Neighborhood Services and must be wrapped. Electronics and household hazardous waste never go to the curb, and the city's hazardous waste event program is closed for the rest of 2026.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

A mattress and box spring are collected at the curb on a scheduled pickup rather than a routine one, and the city requires them wrapped in plastic before they go out.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. No separate charge applies, because curb collection is covered by the annual waste collection fee billed to residential properties of four units or less. The program is open only to households inside the city's waste and recycling collection programme; a building where the city does not collect trash has to go through its landlord or property manager.
When & how
Call the Department of Neighborhood Services at 518-434-2489 to schedule the pickup, then put the wrapped items at the curb after 4:30 p.m. the night before the pickup. Free mattress bags are available at 1 Richard J. Conners Blvd., 200 Henry Johnson Blvd. and 24 Eagle Street.
Get it ready
Remove all bedding, including sheets, pillows and mattress covers, then wrap the mattress and box spring in heavy-duty plastic bags or a hypoallergenic mattress cover at least 0.8 mm thick. Keep the wrapped pieces out of sight until the scheduled date rather than leaving them outside early, and set them where they do not block a sidewalk or roadway.

Couches, sofas and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture is on the city's acceptable bulky trash list and goes to the curb in limited quantities once you call the Department of General Services at least 24 hours before the collection day.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. No per item charge applies, because curb collection is covered by the annual waste collection fee billed to residential properties of four units or less. Excessive quantities may draw a bill and a fine, and quantities are considered excessive when they are not manageable by one person, will not load into the collection vehicle, or need more than four trips between the pile and the truck.
When & how
Call the Department of General Services at (518) 427-7480 during normal business hours, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at least 24 hours before your collection day, then place the pieces at the curb before 12:01 a.m. on the collection day and not before 4:30 p.m. the evening before.
Get it ready
The acceptable list covers couches, loveseats, sofa beds, arm chairs and recliners, tables and chairs, beds, futons, dressers, wood bed frames, armoires, shelving, TV stands, porcelain tubs, sinks and toilets, pianos and organs, and miscellaneous furniture. Keep each load manageable by one person, and keep mattresses on their own scheduled pickup rather than in a furniture pile.

Appliances, white goods and tires

Accepted with preparation

Appliances and other white goods, including refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, water heaters and tires, go to the curb in limited quantities after the same 24 hour call to the Department of General Services.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. No per item charge applies, because curb collection is covered by the annual waste collection fee billed to residential properties of four units or less. The programme serves residential properties of four units or less; larger buildings and commercial properties arrange private collection.
When & how
Call the Department of General Services at (518) 427-7480 at least 24 hours before your collection day, during normal business hours Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., then set the unit at the curb before 12:01 a.m. on the collection day.
Get it ready
Remove the doors from a refrigerator or freezer before it goes out, as New York State law requires and as the city states for a washing machine too. Drain all fluids from a lawn mower or snow blower, and empty and defrost a refrigerator or freezer. The acceptable white goods list also includes air conditioners, dehumidifiers, dishwashers, clothes dryers, furnaces, hot water tanks, microwave ovens, stoves, radiators, cast iron tubs and cast iron sinks.

Televisions, computers and electronics

Not on the regular city route

Electronics cannot go to the curb in New York, so a television, computer, monitor or printer goes to the Department of General Services drop-off on Richard J. Conners Boulevard, or to a city collection event at the Rapp Road landfill by pre-registration.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no charge for dropping electronics at the Department of General Services and describes it as a resident option, while noting that some of the other Capital Region collection sites may charge a fee. Confirm at the front desk when you arrive.
When & how
Drop off at the Department of General Services, 1 Richard J. Conners Blvd., Albany, NY 12204, during regular business hours Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. City household hazardous waste and electronics events are held at the Rapp Road landfill, 525 Rapp Road, and require pre-registration.
Get it ready
Keep electronics out of the trash, the recycling bin and the curb pile, because state law bars them from disposal and the city asks residents not to place a television or other electronics out for collection. Bring identification and register at the front desk. Accepted items include televisions, VCR and DVD players, scanners, printers, speakers, music players, wires and cords, computers, monitors, game consoles, keyboards and mice, portable digital stereos, fax machines, and cell phones with chargers.

Construction and renovation debris

Accepted with preparation

Construction debris is collected at the curb on the regular schedule when it is neatly containerized or bundled, manageable by one person, and set out no more than twice a month.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no separate rate for construction debris because it rides the same collection covered by the annual waste collection fee, but the conditions are strict and an excessive load can draw a bill and a fine. Confirm the load with the Department of General Services before you set it out.
When & how
Set the material out on your scheduled collection day, no more than twice a month, after calling the Department of General Services at (518) 427-7480 with any question about the load.
Get it ready
Containerize the material in metal or plastic garbage cans or tie it in bundles, keep it manageable for one person, and keep loading to no more than four trips between the pile and the collection vehicle. Keep hazardous renovation products such as solvents, driveway sealer and chemistry set chemicals out of the load and take them to the household hazardous waste route instead.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named on the city's acceptable bulky trash list, so a treadmill or a home gym needs a call to the Department of General Services before it goes out.

City cost & eligibility
There is no published rate for an exercise machine. If the city accepts it as bulky trash, it rides the collection covered by the annual waste collection fee with no per item charge, and if it does not, the household has to arrange something else. Confirm with the Department of General Services before the piece goes out.
When & how
Call the Department of General Services at (518) 427-7480 during business hours, at least 24 hours before your collection day, and confirm the machine before setting it out.
Get it ready
Fold the machine down as far as it will go and describe it accurately when you call, including the size and the weight. Remove or drain anything it holds, and keep the machine out of the recycling bin, because furniture and scrap metal are on the recycling refusal list.

City cost & eligibility

Every holiday runs a normal collection schedule in Albany.
Get it ready
Use containers with a lid and no more than 50 gallons for bagged waste, and keep containers out of public view when they are not at the curb. Keep yard waste out of the bulky pile and put it in biodegradable bags or bundles on a regular trash day between April 15 and December 1, because stumps, logs, entire trees, stones, bricks and excessive dirt are refused. Electronics and hazardous products never go in the pile.

Call before the bulky pile goes out

Bulk trash and white goods are collected in limited quantities, but only after the Department of General Services is told about them at (518) 427-7480 at least 24 hours before the collection day. The line is answered Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Keep each load to something one person can manage and load within four trips, because an excessive pile can be billed and fined.

Keep electronics and hazardous products out of every pile

Electronics and household hazardous waste are not accepted at the curb, and New York State law bars electronics from the trash and from landfills. Take electronics to the Department of General Services at 1 Richard J. Plan around a closed hazardous waste season

The city normally holds nine free household hazardous waste events a year at the Rapp Road landfill, but it states that no more events will be held in 2026 and that pre-registration is closed for the year. Until events return, PaintCare locations take unused paints, stains, sealers and deck coatings free all year, and most Home Depot and Lowe's stores take rechargeable batteries and intact compact fluorescent bulbs at checkout bins.

Furniture, appliances and other white goods, water heaters, tires, toilets and porcelain fixtures, and limited amounts of construction debris from a residential property of four units or less.

Limited quantities only, and the pile has to be manageable by one person and loadable within four trips. Rapp Road landfill

The city landfill, where collection trucks and private haulers deliver waste and where the city holds its household hazardous waste and electronics collection events.

Cost & conditions
The city publishes no residential self-haul rate for this facility on its website, and its page describes incoming trucks rather than a resident drop-off lane, so the current terms have to come from the facility. Call 518-869-3651 before planning a trip.
Arrange it
The facility is at 525 Rapp Road, Albany, NY 12205 and answers at 518-869-3651. Household hazardous waste and electronics collection events are held here and require pre-registration.

Open Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. with the last load in at 10:30 a.m., and closed Saturday and Sunday, so any trip has to happen in a short morning window. The city does not publish a residential self-haul programme or rate for this site.

Private collection for larger buildings

Households and property managers in buildings with more than four units, or in commercial and mixed occupancy properties, where the city does not collect waste.

Cost & conditions
Properties with more than four residential units and commercial properties are required to arrange and pay for their own private trash collection, and each company sets its own price. Nothing is published by the city.
Arrange it
The property owner or manager contracts a private hauler for the building, and the city's waste collection fee does not apply to those properties.

The city programme, including curbside bulky collection and the mattress pickup, is limited to residential properties of four units or less, so a larger building handles its own collection, including any bulky items.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Most of Albany's bulky material does not need a trip, because furniture, appliances and other white goods are collected at the curb once the Department of General Services is called at least 24 hours ahead, and mattresses are collected on a scheduled pickup after they are wrapped. What cannot go to the curb is electronics, which go to the Department of General Services at 1 Richard J. Conners Blvd. with identification, and household hazardous waste, which the city normally takes at nine free events a year at the Rapp Road landfill but which is closed for the rest of 2026. While the events are closed, PaintCare locations take unused paints, stains, sealers and deck coatings, and most home improvement stores take rechargeable batteries and intact compact fluorescent bulbs at their checkout bins. The Rapp Road landfill itself is open only Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. with the last load in at 10:30 a.m., and the city's published pages list no residential rate and no self-haul lane there, so call 518-869-3651 before planning a trip. Will Albany pick up a couch at the curb?

Yes, if you call first. What does curbside collection cost in Albany?

Albany charges an annual waste collection fee of 180 dollars per unit on residential homes of four units or less, and since 2026 that appears as a separate fee on the property tax bill. New York State law bars electronics from the trash and from landfills, and the city asks residents not to put a television or other electronics out for collection. Take them to the Department of General Services at 1 Richard J. Conners Blvd. during business hours, show identification and register at the front desk, or pre-register for a city electronics collection event at the Rapp Road landfill.Official guidance

Are household hazardous waste events running in Albany right now?

Not for the rest of 2026. The city normally holds nine free collection events a year at the Rapp Road landfill, but it states that no further events will be held in 2026 and that pre-registration has closed for the year. Until they return, PaintCare locations take unused paints and stains free all year, and most home improvement stores take rechargeable batteries and intact compact fluorescent bulbs at checkout bins.Official guidance
