Desks and bookshelves
Choose by construction, not height alone. A basic desk is different from a heavy desk with a substantial body. A tall, lightweight bookcase can still be a standard bookshelf. Empty it first.

Excessive quantities may draw a bill and a fine, and quantities are considered excessive when they are not manageable by one person, will not load into the collection vehicle, or need more than four trips between the pile and the truck.

Get it ready
The acceptable list covers couches, loveseats, sofa beds, arm chairs and recliners, tables and chairs, beds, futons, dressers, wood bed frames, armoires, shelving, TV stands, porcelain tubs, sinks and toilets, pianos and organs, and miscellaneous furniture. Keep each load manageable by one person, and keep mattresses on their own scheduled pickup rather than in a furniture pile.
Bulk trash and white goods are collected in limited quantities, but only after the Department of General Services is told about them at (518) 427-7480 at least 24 hours before the collection day. The line is answered Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Keep each load to something one person can manage and load within four trips, because an excessive pile can be billed and fined.
Trash, recycling and bulky items go to the curb before 12:01 a.m. on the collection day and never before 4:30 p.m. the day before. Bagged waste goes in metal or plastic containers with a lid and no more than 50 gallons, and containers may not be stored in public view when they are not at the curb. Most of Albany's bulky material does not need a trip, because furniture, appliances and other white goods are collected at the curb once the Department of General Services is called at least 24 hours ahead, and mattresses are collected on a scheduled pickup after they are wrapped. What cannot go to the curb is electronics, which go to the Department of General Services at 1 Richard J. Conners Blvd. with identification, and household hazardous waste, which the city normally takes at nine free events a year at the Rapp Road landfill but which is closed for the rest of 2026. While the events are closed, PaintCare locations take unused paints, stains, sealers and deck coatings, and most home improvement stores take rechargeable batteries and intact compact fluorescent bulbs at their checkout bins.
