Get it ready
Remove all bedding, including sheets, pillows and mattress covers, then wrap the mattress and box spring in heavy-duty plastic bags or a hypoallergenic mattress cover at least 0.8 mm thick. Keep the wrapped pieces out of sight until the scheduled date rather than leaving them outside early, and set them where they do not block a sidewalk or roadway.

Most of Albany's bulky material does not need a trip, because furniture, appliances and other white goods are collected at the curb once the Department of General Services is called at least 24 hours ahead, and mattresses are collected on a scheduled pickup after they are wrapped. What cannot go to the curb is electronics, which go to the Department of General Services at 1 Richard J. Conners Blvd. with identification, and household hazardous waste, which the city normally takes at nine free events a year at the Rapp Road landfill but which is closed for the rest of 2026.
