A mattress is on the city's accepted bulk list, and it can also be driven to the Rock Cut Road transfer station on its own without paying the vehicle entrance fee.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. The city publishes no per item charge for a mattress booked as a bulk collection; the alternative transfer station route charges a mattress fee described on that option, and a mattress dropped off alone does not pay the vehicle entrance fee.
When & how
Book a bulk collection with Cityline at least two days ahead and set the mattress between the sidewalk and the curb, or take it to the Rock Cut Road transfer station in Jamesville on a weekday evening or Saturday morning.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and handleable for one person where you can, count it against the 2 cubic yard and 50 pound bulk limits for a collection, and remember that box springs and bed frames are charged differently at the transfer station than a mattress dropped off alone.
Bulk items do not ride the weekly truck on their own. Call Cityline at 315-448-CITY (2489) at least two days before the collection you want, and remember the household allowance is four bulk collections in a calendar year.
Each bulk collection is capped by size, weight and count: no more than 2 cubic yards, which the city compares to a washer and dryer side by side, and no more than 50 pounds. A larger clear-out takes more than one collection.

No charge. Bulk collection is part of the city's residential service and the city publishes no per item fee; the allowance is four collections a calendar year at 2 cubic yards and 50 pounds each.

Four collections a year, 2 cubic yards and 50 pounds per collection, and the accepted list stops at carpets, furniture that is not made entirely of wood, mattresses, tires and bagged trash. Appliances, electronics, paint, hazardous waste and demolition material are all outside it.

Open to Onondaga County residents who deliver their own household material, with an entrance fee of 15 dollars for a car and 30 dollars for a pickup truck, SUV, van or single axle trailer, no entrance fee when a load is disposed of on prepaid trash bag stickers, 2 dollars a visit for recyclables, and item fees of 15 dollars for an appliance with refrigerant, 20 dollars for a mattress of any size, 5 dollars for a microwave and 7 dollars for a passenger tire up to 20 inches.
Arrange it
Take the load to 5808 Rock Cut Road in Jamesville during resident hours, Monday to Friday 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. or Saturday 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. through the end of summer, unload it yourself, and keep the load tarped if you arrive in a truck or trailer.
Residents only, and the material has to be delivered by the resident rather than a hauler or contractor. Tires have to be under 20 inches with the rims removed and are limited to ten, an untarped vehicle pays an extra fee, and the station closes on the six major holidays.
Household trash, recyclables, large appliances including microwaves, refrigerators and dishwashers, appliances with refrigerant such as ice makers and dehumidifiers, mattresses, box springs and bed frames, tires up to 20 inches with the rims removed, and construction and demolition material such as masonry, glass, insulation, empty dry paint cans, plumbing fixtures, roofing, siding, treated and untreated wood, drywall and plaster, all subject to size restrictions.
Onondaga County residents only, with the material delivered by the resident rather than a hauler or contractor, no appointment needed, and residents unloading their own material because the agency cannot provide assistance. Overload fees can apply by load size or type, loads in a truck bed or trailer must be tarped, and electronics are not taken here at all.

You can choose an offered pickup day around your replacement delivery. First check whether the retailer already includes old-mattress removal, and arrange who will bring it outside if needed.
