Treadmill, walking pad or commercial model?
Household treadmill includes folding home models with a tall console. Choose Walking pad for a compact under-desk model, or Commercial treadmill for a large gym machine. All equipment opens those choices.
An exercise bike, elliptical or rower
Spin, upright, recumbent and air bikes all use Exercise bike, including Peloton and other brands. One elliptical includes its connected base, handles and pedals. Rowing machines and Pilates reformers have their own choices.
Weights, racks and benches
Add together the pounds of loose dumbbells, kettlebells, plates and barbells. Free weights are priced in 10 lb units, rounding the combined weight up. For example, 25 lb uses three units. Add a stand, rack or bench separately if it is going too.

Elyria picks up bulk or large items on the regular collection route, and the city defines them as large residential items that cannot fit in a city cart.

Disassemble items as much as you can, remove every screw and nail, keep boxes and bags contained and under 50 pounds, cut carpet and padding and tie it into bundles no longer than 4 feet, and wrap a mattress in plastic before it goes out.
No Elyria list names a treadmill or weight machine, and the county Collection Center refuses exercise equipment outright, so the machine has to be confirmed with the city before it goes out.

No exercise machine price is published and the county takes none at all, so confirm with the Sanitation Department on 440-322-3895 whether the machine will be collected as bulk and whether a large pile carries an extra charge.

Get it ready
Take the console and any loose weights off so the frame is manageable, remove screws and nails, and keep the machine out of the carts while you wait for the answer. Do not take it to the county center, which refuses exercise equipment.

Cut carpet and padding and tie it into bundles no longer than four feet, wrap a mattress in plastic, and take the doors off a refrigerator or freezer. Anything holding refrigerant is refused until a certified technician discharges the Freon and tags the unit.
The carts and the bulk pile share one set-out window
Refuse may go on the curb lawn no sooner than 5 p.m. the day before collection and no later than 7 a.m. on the collection day, because routes start at 7 a.m. and a late set-out may wait a week. Keep three feet of clearance around each cart, take the carts back off the tree lawn the same day, and put a bulk pile out with the same timing as the carts.

Self-hauling in Elyria means two places. The Lorain County Collection Center at 540 South Abbe Road takes electronic scrap, household hazardous waste from residences, fluorescent bulbs and ballasts, tires up to a 20-inch rim, paper for shredding and extra recyclables, on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday with photo identification, and the county asks large loads to be booked on 440-329-5440. Everything else that is too big for a cart belongs on the city route: bulk items go out with the regular collection after they are disassembled, stripped of screws and nails, and prepared the way the city asks, with mattresses wrapped in plastic, carpet cut and tied, and no appliance that still holds refrigerant. Construction and demolition debris has no local route, because the city publishes none and the county refuses that material outright. Yard waste goes to the Barnes Materials compost facility at 45 Chestnut Street, which is free for Elyria residents.
