A stove, oven, dishwasher, washer, dryer, water heater or barbecue grill with the tank removed is free to residential customers at Metro Central, while a refrigerator, freezer, portable air conditioner, dehumidifier or water cooler is charged per appliance with a limit of five a day, and the collection company bulky pickup adds a flat fee plus a per item charge, so confirm the route before the unit moves.
When & how
Either an appointment with the collection company on its bulky day or a trip to Metro Central, which is open to the general public 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and closed on the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's days.
Get it ready
Empty the unit, remove the doors where the manufacturer allows it, and keep the appliance out of the recycling bin, which never accepts electronic devices or hazardous items. A barbecue grill goes out only with the tank removed, and a coolant unit is handled as its own category rather than with the metal appliances.
A bulky waste pickup is scheduled with the collection company that serves the address, the cost is a flat pickup fee plus a charge for each item, and the bulky collection day can fall on a different day than the normal garbage and recycling collection.

Arrange it
Drive the load to 6161 NW 61st Ave in Portland, arrive between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., separate the material by type for the right rate, cover any loose load because uncovered loads pay more, and keep hazardous material for the separate facility on the same site.
