The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Hermiston does not run its own collection crews. Every solid waste service inside the city limits is contracted to Sanitary Disposal, Inc., which collects curbside garbage and recycling, manages the free recycling depots and operates the transfer station on Highway 395. City Hall takes start and stop requests, billing questions and the free yard trimming permits from residents inside the city limits, while households outside the limits call the hauler directly. The automatic weekly service is the garbage cart. Everything larger is a bulky pickup requested through Sanitary Disposal, which names furniture and home appliances as the sort of thing it collects but publishes no rate, so the price and the item's eligibility are both confirmed when the pickup is booked. Curbside recycling began on July 6, 2026 under Oregon's recycling law, runs every other week in a 95 gallon cart, and refuses electronics, batteries, hazardous items and glass, so televisions and computers leave through the free state electronics programme or the transfer station depot instead.

Special rules apply

A mattress is not part of the weekly curbside service in Hermiston. It leaves through a bulky item pickup requested from Sanitary Disposal, which advertises furniture and home appliances as the material it collects but publishes no item list or rate.

City cost & eligibility
No bulky item rate is published. The city Master Fee Schedule refers solid waste rates to Sanitary Disposal Fees and the hauler's charges and fees page carries no figures, so call Sanitary Disposal at 541-567-8842 and confirm the price and that the mattress is accepted before it goes out.
When & how
Request the pickup through the hauler, then set the mattress out on the day the hauler gives you. The weekly automatic service is the garbage cart only, so nothing large goes out without a request.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry, place it where the collection crew can reach it without blocking the cart or the sidewalk, and keep it separate from hazardous material, electronics and glass, which the program refuses.

Couches, sofas and household furniture

Special rules apply

Furniture is the hauler's own example of bulky material, so a couch leaves through the requested pickup rather than the weekly cart. The rate has to be confirmed because the hauler publishes none.

City cost & eligibility
The hauler publishes no bulky pickup price. Call Sanitary Disposal at 541-567-8842 to schedule the couch and confirm the cost, and ask whether the piece has to be broken down or tied before collection.
When & how
Book the pickup with the hauler and set the furniture out on the assigned day, keeping it clear of the garbage cart so the weekly collection is not disrupted.
Get it ready
Empty drawers and compartments, tie or close anything that could swing open, and keep the piece away from the sidewalk and the cart. Glass and mirrors are refused by the recycling programme, so keep them out of the bulky request.

Appliances and white goods

Special rules apply

Sanitary Disposal names home appliances among the bulky material it collects, and the transfer station takes municipal solid waste, so an appliance has a pickup route and a drop-off route. Neither publishes a rate or a refrigerant rule.

City cost & eligibility
No appliance rate or preparation rule is published. Call Sanitary Disposal at 541-567-8842 and confirm whether the unit is collected as bulky material, whether a refrigerator or air conditioner needs its refrigerant handled first, and what the pickup costs.
When & how
Book the pickup or take the appliance to the transfer station at 81144 N Hwy 395 during the posted hours, and confirm the terms first because the station accepts only non hazardous material.
Get it ready
Empty the unit and secure the doors before it leaves the house, and keep it out of the recycling cart, which accepts only paper, cardboard, plastic containers, metal cans, cartons and certain plastics when they are empty, clean and dry. Appliances are not part of the free state electronics programme.

Televisions, computers and electronics

Not on the regular city route

Electronics are refused in the curbside recycling cart and in the curbside garbage, and they leave through Oregon E-Cycles or the hauler's depot. The state programme is free for televisions, computers, monitors and printers, seven items or fewer at a time.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Oregon E-Cycles is free for seven or fewer computers, laptops, tablets, monitors, televisions and printers at a time at participating collection sites, and keyboards and mice are also accepted free. Other types of electronics are not covered by the programme.
When & how
Take the device to a participating Oregon E-Cycles collection site, and use the state site locator or the toll free number 888-769-0149 to find the current nearest one, or bring it to the Sanitary Disposal depot on Highway 395, which the hauler's poster lists for electronics.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data before a computer leaves the house, and keep batteries, light bulbs, glass and hazardous items out of both the recycling cart and the electronics load. A contaminated recycling cart may be tagged or left unemptied.

Building and project debris

Not on the regular city route

Construction material is not collected at the curb. It goes to the Sanitary Disposal transfer station, which names construction and demolition debris among the waste it accepts. No rate is published.

City cost & eligibility
The transfer station publishes no per load or per ton rate, and the city fee schedule refers solid waste rates to Sanitary Disposal Fees without printing them. Call the transfer station at 541-567-9350 and confirm the price and any limit for the load before you haul it.
When & how
Take the material to 81144 N Hwy 395 and confirm the current hours before the trip, because the hauler's hours and holidays item carries no text on the page and the only published table sits in the city's Sanitary Disposal contact block.
Get it ready
Separate construction material from household garbage, yard waste and any hazardous material, since the station states that it accepts non hazardous municipal solid waste and inert materials only. Keep it out of the recycling cart, which takes only the listed recyclable materials.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named in the hauler's bulky service description or in the published waste lists, so the machine is confirmed with Sanitary Disposal before it goes out.

City cost & eligibility
No rate is published for bulky material at all, and exercise equipment is not named. Call Sanitary Disposal at 541-567-8842, describe the machine, and confirm whether it is collected as bulky material or has to be taken to the transfer station.
When & how
Confirm the item first, then use the requested bulky pickup or take the machine to the transfer station on Highway 395 during the posted hours.
Get it ready
Break the machine down as far as it comes apart, remove loose weights and the console, and keep it off the sidewalk and away from the cart. Keep fluids, batteries and electronic components out of the load, since the station accepts non hazardous material only.

Bulky items and extra material

Special rules apply

Bulky material moves on request through Sanitary Disposal or by hauling it to the transfer station. The only automatic weekly service is the garbage cart, and the curbside recycling cart is a required service that runs every other week.

City cost & eligibility
No bulky pickup rate is published, and the city fee schedule refers solid waste rates to Sanitary Disposal Fees without printing them. Call the hauler at 541-567-8842 for a pickup or the transfer station at 541-567-9350 for a drop-off, and confirm the cost either way.
When & how
Book the pickup with the hauler, or take the load to the transfer station at 81144 N Hwy 395 during the posted hours. Curbside recycling runs every other week in a 95 gallon cart.
Get it ready
Keep garbage inside the cart with the lid closed, because the city fee schedule applies overage charges when the lid does not close, material is left outside the cart, or the cart is overweight. Keep recyclables empty, clean and dry, and keep refused material out of both carts.

Paint, chemicals and household hazardous waste

Not on the regular city route

Hazardous material has no curbside route and no local drop-off. Batteries, paint, propane, needles, ammunition and flammable liquids are refused in the carts, and the route is a household hazardous waste collection event run with the state, the county and the city.

City cost & eligibility
The city and the hauler publish no fee for the household hazardous waste events. Call the Oregon DEQ program contact for Umatilla County at 541-633-2029 to confirm the next event date, its location and what the load may contain.
When & how
Wait for a collection event and confirm its date with the state contact first, since these events are approved and scheduled individually rather than running on a fixed weekly or monthly calendar.
Get it ready
Keep paint, solvents, propane and butane canisters, helium tanks, flares, lighters, ammunition, needles, batteries and flammable liquids out of the garbage cart, the recycling cart and any bulky load, because the hauler's guide and the city both refuse them. Keep products in their original containers and transport them upright.

The weekly service is the cart, and overages are charged

Curbside garbage collection in Hermiston is contracted to Sanitary Disposal and the automatic weekly service is the garbage cart. The city fee schedule applies overage or extra charges when the lid does not close, garbage sits outside the cart or the cart weighs too much, and it also lists a non payment service charge and a same day return service charge for a cart that was not set out.

Curbside recycling is required and runs every other week

Oregon's recycling law requires curbside recycling for cities over 4,000 residents, and Hermiston's service began on July 6, 2026 in a 95 gallon cart collected every other week. Recyclables have to be empty, clean and dry, and a contaminated cart may be tagged or left unemptied.

Electronics, batteries, glass and chemicals stay out of the cart

The recycling cart refuses plastic bags, shrink wrap, styrofoam, food waste, dirty containers, batteries, electronics, hazardous items and glass, and the hauler's disposal guide adds propane canisters, flares, needles, flammable liquids, helium tanks, lighters, paint and ammunition to the refused list. Glass goes to a recycling depot.

Large items are requested, not scheduled automatically

Furniture, home appliances and similar bulky material move on a pickup request through Sanitary Disposal rather than with the weekly cart, and the hauler publishes no item list or price for that service. The transfer station on Highway 395 is the self haul alternative for municipal solid waste, construction debris, yard waste and tires.

Free depots, and a free yard trimming permit from City Hall

Two free recycling depots serve Hermiston in addition to curbside collection, one at the Sanitary Disposal site on Highway 395 and one near Theater Sports Park, and the city and hauler both publish the Highway 395 depot. Residents inside the city limits can also obtain a free yard trimming disposal permit at City Hall, and each permit is valid for two months.

Request a bulky pickup from the hauler

A household inside the city limits with a mattress, couch, appliance or similar piece that will not fit the garbage cart.

Arrange it
Request the pickup through the hauler's bulky item form or by phone, then set the material out on the day the hauler assigns and keep it clear of the garbage cart.

Arrange it
Drive to 81144 N Hwy 395 in Hermiston during the posted hours, and separate the load by material because the depot takes specific recyclables and refuses hazardous material.

The station accepts non hazardous municipal solid waste and inert material, the tire limit is ten per load, and the hauler's own hours and holidays item carries no published text, so hours should be confirmed by phone.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Self haul in Hermiston means the Sanitary Disposal transfer station and recycling depot at 81144 N Hwy 395, the same address as the hauler's office. The station takes non hazardous municipal solid waste, construction and demolition debris, yard waste and auto tires with a limit of ten per load, and the depot takes aluminum, newspaper, glass bottles and jars, milk jugs, scrap metal, motor oil in a closed leak proof container with a daily limit of five gallons, and electronics including televisions, computers, laptops, printers, monitors and tablets. No rates are published for any of it, so confirm the cost and the current hours with the station at 541-567-9350 before loading. Batteries, paint, propane canisters, helium tanks, flares, needles, ammunition, flammable liquids and appliances are refused in the curbside carts, while the depot's own poster lists air conditioners among the aluminum scrap it takes, so confirm a refrigerant appliance at the depot before loading it. 81144 N Hwy 395, Hermiston, OR 97838

Non hazardous municipal solid waste, construction and demolition debris, yard waste, auto tires with a limit of ten per load, and recyclable material at the depot including aluminum, newspaper, glass bottles and jars, milk jugs, scrap metal and electronics such as televisions, computers, laptops, printers, monitors and tablets

Non hazardous material only, with inert material accepted for construction loads and auto tires limited to ten per load. The hauler's curbside guide refuses batteries, paint, propane and butane canisters, helium tanks, flares, needles, ammunition, flammable liquids, appliances and glass in the curbside carts, so those items have to be sorted out before a cart goes out. The depot is a separate route: its own poster lists glass bottles and jars with the recyclables and names air conditioners among the aluminum scrap it takes, so a household with a refrigerant appliance should confirm the drop off with the hauler on 541-567-9350 before loading. No rates are published.

The city prints Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Sanitary Disposal contact block, closed on holidays, while the hauler's own hours item carries no text, so confirm before a trip.

The hauler publishes no transfer station rates and the city fee schedule refers solid waste rates to the hauler without printing them. Call 541-567-9350 to confirm the cost and any load limit before hauling.

Your questions.
Straight answers.

Prices, timing and the details that matter at your address.

How much does pickup cost?

Choose your items to see the exact price. A standard sofa is $79 first and $29 additional. The highest first-item price applies once; every remaining item uses its additional-item price. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Review any applicable sales tax and the final total before payment.

Can I book a pickup for today?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup, where available. Choose from the dates shown at checkout. Your booking is for a pickup day, and we text you when your hauler is on the way.

Do my items need to be outside when I book?

You can book while your items are still inside. Arrange any indoor carrying and have everything outside and accessible according to your confirmation. We load and haul it away from there. Contact us before booking if your property has restricted access.

How do I get a mattress picked up in Hermiston?

Request a bulky item pickup from Sanitary Disposal at 541-567-8842 or through the request form on the hauler site. The hauler describes the service as collecting furniture, home appliances and similar material, and it publishes no rate, so confirm the price and the item when you book.Official guidance

Can a mattress ride with the weekly garbage?

No. The weekly service is the garbage cart that the city contracts from Sanitary Disposal, and the carts are the only thing collected automatically. A mattress waits for a requested bulky pickup, and the city fee schedule applies overage charges when a cart lid does not close or material is left outside the cart.Official guidance

Will the city collect a couch from the curb?

Not automatically. Hermiston contracts curbside collection to Sanitary Disposal, and the bulky service that handles furniture, home appliances and similar items is requested rather than scheduled. Call 541-567-8842 to book it and confirm the price.Official guidance

Can furniture be taken somewhere instead?

The Sanitary Disposal transfer station at 81144 N Hwy 395 accepts municipal solid waste, construction and demolition debris, yard waste and auto tires with a limit of ten per load, so a self haul is possible, but the station prints no rates and the page describes it as non hazardous material only.Official guidance

How do appliances leave a Hermiston home?

Through a bulky item pickup requested from Sanitary Disposal at 541-567-8842, or by hauling the unit to the transfer station on Highway 395, which takes municipal solid waste. Neither route publishes a price, and no page states how a refrigerator's refrigerant has to be handled, so confirm both when you call.Official guidance

Does the free electronics program take appliances?

No. Oregon E-Cycles covers computers, laptops, tablets, monitors, televisions and printers, seven items or fewer at a time, plus keyboards and mice, and the state page states that other types of electronics are not included. A washer, dryer, stove or refrigerator is handled through the hauler instead.Official guidance

Where do televisions and computers go in Hermiston?

To a participating Oregon E-Cycles site, where televisions, computers, laptops, tablets, monitors and printers are free, seven items or fewer at a time, and keyboards and mice are free as well. The state page points readers to the site locator tool or the toll free number for the nearest collection site.Official guidance

Can electronics go in the recycling cart?

No. The city states that batteries, electronics, hazardous items and glass cannot go in the recycling cart, and the hauler's own guide lists electronics, batteries, paint, needles and flammable liquids among the material its programs refuse. Glass goes to a depot instead.Official guidance

Who do Hermiston residents call about garbage service?

Residents inside the city limits contact City Hall at 180 NE 2nd Street on 541-567-5521 to start or change garbage service, ask billing questions or obtain a free yard trimming permit, while residents outside the city limits contact Sanitary Disposal directly at 541-567-8842. The city contracts every solid waste service to Sanitary Disposal.Official guidance

What does curbside recycling cost in Hermiston?

The city publishes a rate of $8 per month for a 95 gallon recycling cart collected every other week, and it suggests residents review their garbage cart size at the same time, since a smaller garbage cart may offset the new service. Curbside recycling became a state requirement and began on July 6, 2026.Official guidance

Where are the free recycling depots?

Hermiston has two free depots in addition to curbside collection, one at the Sanitary Disposal site on Highway 395 and one near Theater Sports Park. The city web page and the city fee schedule print different street addresses for the second depot, so confirm the location with the city or the hauler before a special trip.Official guidance

How does a household get rid of paint and chemicals?

Household hazardous waste is not collected at the curb and has no local drop-off, so it waits for a collection event scheduled with state approval. Oregon DEQ names the regional program contact for Umatilla County at 541-633-2029, and that is the number to call for the next event date and its location.Official guidance
