Couch & furniture removal in Richland

City collection Richland does not offer a curbside large item pickup, so a couch leaves the house on a trailer to the Horn Rapids Landfill as ordinary residential waste, or it goes to a reuse outlet while it is still usable. $10 per load of ordinary residential waste up to 1,200 pounds for a Richland resident at the Horn Rapids Landfill, with anything over that weight at $51.10 per ton. Richland residents with proof of current city waste service, since the load is priced at the scale rather than per piece. Furniture that is still usable can go to a donation outlet instead at no charge.

The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Richland runs its own solid waste utility and its own landfill. Every household gets a gray garbage cart and a green yard waste cart collected weekly, recycling is an optional blue cart collected every other week on a different day, and carts go out by 6 a.m. with room overhead and beside them for the truck. What Richland does not have is a curbside large item service: the city's own request form says large item pickup is not offered at the curb, so furniture, mattresses, appliances and project material go to the Horn Rapids Landfill on Twin Bridges Road or to a recycler. The landfill prices a Richland resident load by the load or by the ton, charges separately for white goods, refrigerant appliances, dirt, concrete and tires, and takes motor oil, antifreeze, cooking oil, batteries and propane tanks on the household side. Electronics and the rest of the household hazardous waste sit outside the landfill entirely and go to the free state electronics program or the county facility in Kennewick.

Weekly garbage and yard waste with optional recycling

Accepted with preparation

Every Richland household gets a gray garbage cart and a green yard waste cart collected weekly on its designated day, and a blue recycling cart can be added to the account and is collected every other week on a different day.

City cost & eligibility
$17.5 per month for basic refuse service, which covers one 96 gallon garbage container and one 96 gallon yard waste container, with a $12.00 residential call-back, an additional refuse container at $8.15, optional curbside recycling at $7.70 and an additional yard waste or recycling container at $2.00. Richland residential accounts on the city solid waste utility. Apartment accounts with no yard waste are billed the lower refuse only rate, and a condominium household whose landscaping is commonly owned can ask the solid waste manager for the no yard waste exemption.
When & how
Garbage, yard waste and recycling are collected Monday through Friday on the account's designated days, and the only collection holiday is Christmas Day, when that day and the rest of the week slide one day later. Yard waste may pause in winter weather, with city announcements when collection is delayed or cancelled.
Get it ready
Carts go out by 6:00 a.m., at least three feet from cars, trees, mailboxes and fences, with a minimum of 14 feet of overhead clearance, wheels as close to the curb as possible and the lid closed. The green cart takes loose grass, leaves, plant trimmings, garden debris and untreated wood and branches under 4 inches in diameter, bagged only in BPI certified compostable bags, and it refuses dirt, rock, treated or glued wood, animal waste, meat, processed food and construction debris, with a contamination charge for garbage in the green cart and an extra refuse container fee for misuse.

Self haul to the Horn Rapids Landfill

Accepted with preparation

The city's own landfill on Twin Bridges Road is the route for household material that no cart will hold. A Richland resident load is priced by the load up to 1,200 pounds and by the ton above it, and it takes ordinary residential waste including construction and demolition debris and extra refuse.

City cost & eligibility
$10 per load of ordinary residential waste up to 1,200 pounds for a Richland resident, with waste over that weight at $51.10 per ton, clean yard waste free, dirt or rock at $12 per ton and concrete or asphalt at $18 per ton. Richland residents who can show proof of current city waste service, with the resident present and an identification card whose name matches the City of Richland utility bill. Any other customer pays the non-Richland rate of $40 per load up to 1,200 pounds and $76.15 per ton above it.
When & how
The landfill is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closed on city observed holidays and the listed national holidays including Thanksgiving Thursday and Friday and Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Get it ready
Bring the current utility bill and a matching photo identification, because the resident rate is tied to the Richland utility account. Sort the load before arrival so clean yard waste, dirt, rock, concrete and asphalt can be weighed on their own rates, and keep electronics and high intensity light bulbs out of the load because the landfill refuses them.

Couches and household furniture

Special rules apply

Richland does not offer a curbside large item pickup, so a couch leaves the house on a trailer to the Horn Rapids Landfill as ordinary residential waste, or it goes to a reuse outlet while it is still usable.

City cost & eligibility
$10 per load of ordinary residential waste up to 1,200 pounds for a Richland resident at the Horn Rapids Landfill, with anything over that weight at $51.10 per ton. Richland residents with proof of current city waste service, since the load is priced at the scale rather than per piece. Furniture that is still usable can go to a donation outlet instead at no charge.
When & how
Load the piece and take it to 3102 Twin Bridges Road during landfill hours, because the city does not collect large items at the curb and the one-time pick-up form covers missed and extra containers rather than furniture.
Get it ready
Keep the piece whole for the scale, stack it so the load stays inside the vehicle, and take it out of the rain if the landfill trip has to wait. Handle upholstery that may contain foam, and keep electronics, tires and hazardous products out of the same load so each stream is weighed separately.
One-time pick-up request form with the missed and extra pick-up charge, the per refill charge and the statement that large item pick-up is not offered for curbside pickupCity solid waste rates page with the residential monthly charges and the Horn Rapids residential, non-resident, appliance, white goods and tire self-haul ratesBenton County appliance page with the Goodwill and Habitat for Humanity donation outlets for working units, the metal recyclers for dead ones and the possible coolant removal feeBenton County construction waste page with the Habitat for Humanity reuse outlet and the Ray Poland and Sons concrete and asphalt recycling option

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

A mattress is ordinary household material, so it rides a self-hauled load to the Horn Rapids Landfill and is priced with the rest of the load rather than by the piece. The city does not collect large items at the curb.

City cost & eligibility
$10 per load of ordinary residential waste up to 1,200 pounds for a Richland resident, with anything over that weight at $51.10 per ton, since mattresses are not itemised on the landfill schedule. Richland residents with proof of current city waste service, with the load priced at the scale.
When & how
Take the mattress to 3102 Twin Bridges Road during landfill hours on a Monday to Saturday, and keep it out of the rain until the trip.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and strap it flat so it does not lift off a trailer, and keep it out of the yard waste cart, which takes vegetation only. A usable mattress in good condition is a candidate for a donation outlet instead of the scale.

Refrigerators, washers and other appliances

Accepted with preparation

The landfill takes white goods such as stoves, washers, dryers and hot water heaters at a small per unit charge, and a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner with refrigerant carries a much larger per unit charge for Benton County residents.

City cost & eligibility
$7 per white goods appliance including stoves, washers, dryers and hot water heaters at the Horn Rapids Landfill, with a CFC appliance such as a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner charged $46 each. Richland residents with proof of current city waste service at the scale. The CFC appliance rate is open to Benton County residents only, so a refrigerant unit is not accepted from outside the county.
When & how
Take the unit to 3102 Twin Bridges Road during landfill hours, or hand a working appliance to a donation outlet or a dead one to a metal recycler.
Get it ready
Empty and defrost a refrigerator or freezer, secure the doors and shelves, and keep the unit upright on the trailer. Working appliances can go to Goodwill or the Habitat for Humanity store, and units beyond repair go to a metal recycler, where coolant removal from a refrigerator or freezer may carry a fee.

Televisions, computers and household electronics

Accepted with preparation

The landfill takes no electronic waste at all. Televisions, computer towers, laptops, monitors and e-readers are free through the state E-Cycle Washington programme at the registered locations in Benton County.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Household electronics covered by the state programme, which guarantees free recycling at the registered locations including DTG Recycle on Saint Street in Richland and the Goodwill donation centres. Items outside the programme, such as printers, mice and keyboards, may not be accepted there and need another route.
When & how
Take the device to a registered E-Cycle Washington location during its open hours, and call the recycler first because the listing publishes the address rather than a schedule.
Get it ready
Erase the device or destroy the drive before handover, keep electronics out of the landfill load because the landfill refuses them, and keep batteries separate so they can be handled on the household battery route rather than inside a device.

Construction, renovation and demolition material

Accepted with preparation

The Horn Rapids Landfill takes construction and demolition debris as part of an ordinary residential load, and it prices dirt, rock, concrete and asphalt on their own per ton rates. Concrete and asphalt also have a dedicated recycler in Kennewick.

City cost & eligibility
$10 per load of ordinary residential waste up to 1,200 pounds for a Richland resident, which the rate schedule states includes construction and demolition waste and extra refuse, with loads over that weight at $51.10 per ton, dirt or rock at $12 per ton and concrete or asphalt at $18 per ton. Richland residents with proof of current city waste service. Reusable materials such as plumbing supplies, used furniture and usable paint can go to the Habitat for Humanity store, and asphalt, wire mesh, concrete and concrete with rebar can be recycled through Ray Poland and Sons.
When & how
Take household project material to 3102 Twin Bridges Road during landfill hours, sorting the dirt, concrete and asphalt so they are weighed on their own rates.
Get it ready
Separate concrete, asphalt, dirt and rock from mixed debris, keep organic material out of a concrete recycler's load, and keep paint, chemicals and other hazardous products out of the trailer entirely because they belong on the hazardous waste route. Reusable building material, used furniture and usable paint can go to the Habitat for Humanity store instead of the scale.

Passenger and truck tires

Accepted with preparation

Tires are priced by the piece at the landfill, with a higher rate when the rim is still on, and heavy equipment tires are charged by the ton.

City cost & eligibility
$4 per car tire off the rim at the Horn Rapids Landfill, with a truck tire off the rim at $9 each, a car tire with the rim at $7 each, a truck tire with the rim at $12 each and heavy equipment tires at $125 per ton. Richland residents bringing tires with a load at the landfill, with the resident waste service proof required at the gate.
When & how
Take the tires to 3102 Twin Bridges Road during landfill hours, and separate them from the rest of the load so they are counted by the piece.
Get it ready
Take the tires off the rims where you can, because an off rim tire is the cheaper rate, keep them out of the yard waste and recycling carts, and keep heavy equipment tires on their own ton rate rather than mixing them into a household load.
City solid waste rates page with the residential monthly charges and the Horn Rapids residential, non-resident, appliance, white goods and tire self-haul rates

Treadmills and exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is named on no Richland or Benton County list, so the machine is confirmed with the solid waste line before it is loaded and then travels as ordinary residential waste.

City cost & eligibility
The landfill schedule prices ordinary residential waste by the load or by the ton rather than by item, and exercise equipment is not named on the city or county lists, so call the solid waste line at 509-942-7700 and confirm the machine and its weight before the trip. A machine that is mostly metal may also be worth asking a metal recycler about.
When & how
Confirm the machine first, then take it to 3102 Twin Bridges Road during landfill hours, keeping the trip to a Monday through Saturday.
Get it ready
Break the machine down as far as it comes apart, keep the weights and hardware with the frame so the load stays contained, and strap it down because a treadmill will not sit still on a trailer at highway speed.
City solid waste rates page with the residential monthly charges and the Horn Rapids residential, non-resident, appliance, white goods and tire self-haul ratesHorn Rapids Landfill page with the address, phone, hours, holiday closures, the resident proof of service requirement, the special waste window, the accepted oil, battery and propane streams and the refusal of electronics and high intensity bulbs

Oil, batteries, paint and other household hazardous waste

Accepted with preparation

The landfill takes the everyday automotive and household streams itself, including motor oil, antifreeze, cooking oil, automotive and rechargeable batteries and propane tanks. Paint, solvents, pesticides and the rest of the hazardous cupboard go to the county facility in Kennewick.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Richland households, with the landfill streams taken alongside a load and each oil limited to 5 gallons per visit, and the county Moderate Risk Waste Facility taking household hazardous waste on its public drop-off days. The county also runs free residential collection events a few times each year, with limited amounts accepted and the number of events dependent on a state grant.
When & how
The landfill takes motor oil, antifreeze and cooking oil during its Monday through Saturday hours, and customers are asked to call 509-942-7700 about level status before arriving. The county facility opens Tuesday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on the third Saturday of each month from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Get it ready
Keep oil, antifreeze and cooking oil in separate containers and inside the per visit limit, keep batteries out of the garbage and recycling carts, and pack paint, solvents, pesticides and other labelled hazardous products for the county facility rather than the landfill. The county facility refuses appliances, ammunition, alkaline and lithium batteries, asbestos, needles, medicines and compressed cylinders.

Carts go out by 6:00 a.m. on the designated collection day, at least three feet from cars, trees, mailboxes and fences, with a minimum of 14 feet of clearance overhead, the wheels as close to the curb as possible and the lid closed. Garbage and yard waste are collected weekly and recycling, when the household has added it, every other week on a different day. Christmas Day is the only collection holiday, and that day plus the rest of the week moves one day later.

Large items do not go to the curb in Richland

The city does not offer a curbside large item pickup, and its own one-time pick-up form covers missed and extra containers at a charge while stating that large item pick-up is not offered for curbside pickup. A couch, a mattress, an appliance, tires or project material therefore travels to the Horn Rapids Landfill on Twin Bridges Road, or to a recycler or reuse outlet, and the resident rate there requires the utility bill and a matching identification.

City of Richland Solid Waste Utility with the city owned Horn Rapids Landfill, plus Benton County facilities

Haul the load to the Horn Rapids Landfill

A Richland household with furniture, a mattress, an appliance, tires or project material and a vehicle or trailer to move it.

Cost & conditions
$10 per load of ordinary residential waste up to 1,200 pounds for a Richland resident, with anything over that weight at $51.10 per ton, clean yard waste free, dirt or rock at $12 per ton, concrete or asphalt at $18 per ton, white goods at $7 each, a CFC appliance at $46 each, a car tire off the rim at $4 each and a truck tire off the rim at $9 each. Richland residents with proof of current city waste service, with the resident present and identification matching the City of Richland utility bill. Other customers pay the non-Richland rate.
Arrange it
Load and secure the material, drive to 3102 Twin Bridges Road, and check in at the scale with the utility bill and identification during the 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Saturday window.

The landfill refuses electronic waste and high intensity light bulbs, the CFC appliance rate is open to Benton County residents only, and the site is closed on city observed holidays and the listed national holidays including Thanksgiving Thursday and Friday and Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Book a missed or extra container pick-up

A household whose cart was missed or that has extra bags that fit the same collection stream.

Cost & conditions
$12 per missed or extra pick-up request, with an additional $2.90 for each time the emptied container is refilled and dumped. Richland residential accounts submitting the one-time pick-up form, with requests made after 11:00 a.m. completed the following business day.
Arrange it
Submit the one-time pick-up form and leave the container accessible, because the crew cannot empty a cart that is not at the curb when it arrives.

The service covers containers and extra bags rather than large items, since the city states that large item pick-up is not offered for curbside pickup, and a call-back fee applies when a container is not out on time.

Drop household hazardous waste in Kennewick

A household clearing out paint, solvents, pesticides, acids, mercury products or other labelled hazardous products.

Cost & conditions
No charge. Households using the county Moderate Risk Waste Facility on its public drop-off days, with free residential collection events also run a few times each year in spring and fall with limited amounts accepted.
Arrange it
Pack the products so they cannot tip or leak, drive to 1709 S Ely Street in Kennewick, and hand them in during the Tuesday to Friday window or the third Saturday morning.

The facility refuses appliances, ammunition, alkaline and lithium batteries, asbestos, agricultural and commercial grade chemicals, needles, radioactive materials, medicines and compressed cylinders, and it is closed on Mondays and on Saturdays other than the third of the month.

With a new purchase

Donate usable goods before hauling them

A household with furniture, building material, plumbing supplies, usable paint or a working appliance that someone else could use.

Cost & conditions
No charge. Usable items offered to a donation outlet, with the county naming Goodwill at 201 Wellsian Way in Richland for working appliances and the Habitat for Humanity store at 309 Wellsian Way in Richland for furniture, construction materials, plumbing supplies and usable paint, both asking for a call before delivery.
Arrange it
Call the outlet first, describe the item and its condition, and deliver during its open hours rather than leaving anything outside.

Only usable items are taken, so a torn couch, a dead appliance or leftover debris still goes to the landfill or a metal recycler, and coolant removal from a refrigerator or freezer may carry a fee at a recycler.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Richland residents self haul to the city's own Horn Rapids Landfill at 3102 Twin Bridges Road, open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, where proof of current waste service and a matching identification keep the load on the resident rate: an ordinary residential load up to 1,200 pounds is priced by the load, anything heavier by the ton, clean yard waste is free, and dirt, rock, concrete and asphalt are weighed on their own rates. White goods are charged per unit and a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner holding refrigerant is charged at a higher per unit rate open to Benton County residents only, tires are charged by size and by whether the rim is still on, and construction and demolition debris rides an ordinary residential load. The landfill also takes motor oil, antifreeze and cooking oil on a 5 gallon per visit limit each, plus automotive and rechargeable batteries and propane tanks, but it takes no electronic waste and no high intensity light bulbs. That material goes to the free state electronics locations such as DTG Recycle on Saint Street in Richland or the Goodwill donation centres, hazardous products go to the county facility on S Ely Street in Kennewick, and usable furniture, building material and working appliances can go to Goodwill or the Habitat for Humanity store instead of the scale. What do I need to get the Richland resident rate at the landfill?

Proof of current Richland waste service, with the resident present and an identification card whose name matches the City of Richland utility bill. Without it the load is charged the non-Richland rate instead. The landfill is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closes on city observed holidays, and questions go to 509-942-7700.Official guidance

Will Richland pick up a couch from the curb?

No. The city's one-time pick-up form covers missed and extra containers at a charge and states that large item pick-up is not offered for curbside pickup, so a couch goes to the Horn Rapids Landfill on Twin Bridges Road instead, where a Richland resident load is priced by the load up to 1,200 pounds and by the ton above that. A couch that is still usable can go to a donation outlet such as the Habitat for Humanity store in Richland.Official guidance

What does Richland charge for an appliance at the landfill?

White goods such as a stove, washer, dryer or hot water heater are charged per unit at the Horn Rapids Landfill, while a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner holding refrigerant is charged at a higher per unit rate that is open to Benton County residents only. Working appliances can go to Goodwill or the Habitat for Humanity store instead, and a unit beyond repair can go to a metal recycler, where coolant removal may carry a fee.Official guidance

Where do Richland televisions and computers go?

To a registered E-Cycle Washington location such as DTG Recycle on Saint Street in Richland or a Goodwill donation centre, where televisions, computer towers, laptops, monitors, e-readers and portable DVD players are recycled free. The Horn Rapids Landfill takes no electronic waste, and printers, mice and keyboards may not be accepted through the state programme, so confirm the item before loading the car.Official guidance

Who collects trash in Richland?

The City of Richland Solid Waste Utility, which runs the curbside programme and owns and operates the Horn Rapids Landfill on Twin Bridges Road. Every household gets weekly garbage and yard waste collection, recycling is an optional cart collected every other week, and the utility answers on 509-942-7700 for landfill and collection questions and through the one-time pick-up form for missed or extra containers.Official guidance

What does it cost to clear a house in Richland?

The city does not collect large items at the curb, so the cost is a landfill trip: a Richland resident load up to 1,200 pounds is priced by the load, heavier loads by the ton, white goods are charged per unit, a refrigerant appliance is charged at a higher per unit rate open to Benton County residents, and tires are charged by size and by whether the rim is on. Extra containers and bags are a separate request with its own charge, and electronics are free through the state programme. Dropcurb prices a booking separately with the total shown before payment.Official guidance

Can I take my own load to the Richland landfill?

Yes, if you can show proof of current Richland waste service with the resident present and an identification card whose name matches the City of Richland utility bill, which keeps the load on the resident rate. The landfill is at 3102 Twin Bridges Road and opens 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, closed on city observed holidays, and it takes ordinary residential waste including construction and demolition debris along with separate streams for dirt, concrete, appliances and tires.Official guidance
