The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Walla Walla runs its own solid waste service rather than handing it to a hauler. The Sanitation Division collects carts for nearly nine thousand five hundred households every week, Basin Disposal is under contract for the every other week recycling run, and the city also operates the Sudbury Regional Landfill, the Compost Facility and the Household Hazardous Waste Facility that serves the whole county. What that means for a household is a split system. Small extras do not go beside the cart, because the residential rules forbid material on the ground, and no bulky curbside programme is published, so a couch, a mattress or an appliance travels to the landfill at 414 Landfill Road and is charged by weight, with a published per unit rate for cooling appliances and for televisions and computers. One physical utility bill with a sanitation charge buys a free residential load up to six hundred pounds once a year, which covers most single item trips, while household chemicals go free to the hazardous waste facility on the same site.

Weekly garbage cart service

Accepted with preparation

The Sanitation Division collects carts for nearly nine thousand five hundred households every week, with the container at the curb by seven in the morning and no extra material on the ground beside it.

City cost & eligibility
$29.95 per month for a 96 gallon sanitation container in the 2026 utility rate schedule. City of Walla Walla sanitation customers. Carry out service for a household that cannot take its own container to the curb is available for an additional charge, and a container left out overfilled is billed an extra fee when the lid stands open more than 45 degrees or the container is too heavy.
When & how
The container goes to the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the collection day, three feet from obstacles such as cars, utility poles and other containers, not under low hanging branches or utility lines, with the lid opening toward the street. A collection day that falls on a holiday moves to the next working day for garbage, recycling and green waste.
Get it ready
Keep everything inside the container with the lid closed, because extra material on the ground beside it is not collected and wedged items stop the container emptying. Bag small loose material so it does not blow away, and keep household hazardous waste out of the cart entirely because it belongs at the hazardous waste facility.

Couches, chairs and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture travels the same route as other household material: a weighed general waste load at the Sudbury Landfill. The annual courtesy pass covers one free residential load up to six hundred pounds, which is more than enough for a couch.

City cost & eligibility
From $17.99 per general waste load under 300 pounds at the Sudbury Landfill, with heavier loads charged by the ton and an additional 3.6 percent Washington State refuse tax. Walla Walla residents. A household with current sanitation services may put its free courtesy pass toward the trip, covering one residential load up to 600 pounds including tax.
When & how
Take the piece to the Sudbury Landfill during its published hours, or hold it for a trip that uses the annual courtesy pass so the load costs nothing.
Get it ready
Secure the piece in the vehicle and keep it out of the cart, because extra material beside the container is not collected. Keep restricted material out of the same load, since mixing it applies the highest charge to the whole load, and empty the drawers and remove anything you are keeping before the trip.

Mattresses and box springs

Refrigerators, freezers and other appliances

Accepted with preparation

An appliance with a compressor has its own published rate at the Sudbury Landfill, and an appliance without one rides a general waste load. The courtesy pass does not cover appliances with refrigerant, so a refrigerator is paid for even in a household that has not used its free load yet.

City cost & eligibility
From $71.5 per refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner with a compressor at the Sudbury Landfill, with an additional 3.6 percent Washington State refuse tax. When & how
Take the unit to the Sudbury Landfill during its published hours and present it at the scale, where appliances with compressors are separated from the general waste rate.
Get it ready

Televisions, computers and electronics

Accepted with preparation

Electronics have a published per item rate at the Sudbury Landfill, and the courtesy pass does not cover them, so a television or computer is a paid trip.

City cost & eligibility
From $55.84 per television or computer hardware item at the Sudbury Landfill, with an additional 3.6 percent Washington State refuse tax. Walla Walla residents tipping electronics. The courtesy pass expressly does not cover electronic devices, so the per item rate applies, and the household hazardous waste facility lists computers and televisions among its fee based items.
When & how

Get it ready
Wipe personal data before the device leaves the house, and keep batteries out of both carts, because the city warns against putting lithium ion and vehicle batteries in the garbage container and takes them free at the hazardous waste facility. Remodeling, construction and demolition debris

Accepted with preparation

Building material goes to the Sudbury Landfill by weight. A load of only cement, asphalt, concrete, soil or rock has its own per ton rate, and mixed construction material rides the general waste rate.

City cost & eligibility
From $91.12 per ton for a vehicle disposing of only cement, asphalt, concrete, soil or rock, with mixed construction loads charged the general waste rate of $119.40 a ton and an additional 3.6 percent Washington State refuse tax. Walla Walla residents tipping building material. The courtesy pass does not cover compost or dirt sales, and mixing restricted material with other refuse applies the highest applicable charge to the whole load at the landfill supervisor's discretion.
When & how
Take the load to the Sudbury Landfill during its published hours. Keep heavy material in its own vehicle load where possible so the lower per ton rate for cement, asphalt, concrete, soil or rock applies instead of the general waste rate.
Get it ready
Avoid mixing restricted streams such as asbestos or medical waste into a general load, because the whole load then takes the highest applicable charge and the landfill may refuse it. Secure the load and cover it, since an unsecured or uncovered load carries an extra charge, and separate clean concrete or soil from mixed debris to get the lower rate.

Treadmills and home gym equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is named nowhere on the city's pages and carries no rate line of its own, so a treadmill or weight machine is a confirmation rather than a promised tip fee.

City cost & eligibility
The rate schedule prices general waste loads and then names specific items such as cooling appliances, televisions, tires and building material, with no exercise category. Call the solid waste line on 509.527.4591 and describe the machine before loading it.
When & how
Confirm the machine, then take it to the Sudbury Landfill during its published hours, where it will most likely be weighed as a general waste load if it is accepted.
Get it ready
Break the machine down as far as it comes apart so it can be handled and weighed, and keep loose weights and electronics separate. Remove and tape any battery, because batteries are taken free at the hazardous waste facility and are not wanted in a general waste load or the cart.

Tires

Accepted with preparation

Tires have published rates at the Sudbury Landfill, and the courtesy pass does not cover them, so a tire trip is always a paid load.

City cost & eligibility
From $8.18 per passenger car, SUV or pickup truck tire without a rim in a load of fewer than 20 tires, with a higher rate for tires that keep their rims and a per ton rate for large loads, plus an additional 3.6 percent Washington State refuse tax. Walla Walla residents tipping tires. The courtesy pass expressly does not cover tires, so this charge applies on its own even for a household that has not used its free residential load.
When & how
Take the tires to the Sudbury Landfill during its published hours. Keep a load under twenty tires if you want the per tire rate rather than the per ton rate.
Get it ready
Keep tires out of the cart and out of the green waste container, and decide before the trip whether to leave the rims on, because a tire with a rim costs more than one without. A load of twenty or more tires, or tractor and heavy equipment tires, is charged by the ton instead.

Paint, oil, batteries and household hazardous waste

Accepted with preparation

Household chemicals go free to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at the Sudbury Landfill, which serves all of Walla Walla County and refuses business waste. Batteries are recycled free, paint is free up to a monthly limit, and motor oil has a daily limit.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free for Walla Walla County residents with no business waste accepted. Batteries are recycled free, house paint is free up to the monthly PaintCare limit, and motor oil is taken within the daily limit and container size rules. Fee based disposal applies to Freon containing items such as refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners and to electronics such as computers and televisions.

Take the material to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at the Sudbury Landfill during its operating hours, and call the solid waste line on 509.527.4591 to confirm them before travelling.
Get it ready
Keep household hazardous waste out of both curbside containers, because the city states that it must not go in the cart or the garbage container. Tape the terminals of 9 volt and lithium batteries, bag sharps in a labelled sealed puncture resistant container such as an old bleach bottle, keep motor oil uncontaminated with no drums and in containers of five gallons or less, and bring only PaintCare programme house paint, since thinners, adhesives, roof tars, glues and solvents are refused. Ammunition, explosives, smoke detectors, asbestos and medications are handled through other routes, and mercury containing lights are banned from the landfill and the garbage.

Every other week curbside recycling

Accepted with preparation

Recycling is a mandatory curbside service under state and city code, collected every other week on the same weekday as the garbage by Basin Disposal under contract with the city. The same material can be dropped free at the Sudbury Landfill entrance.

City cost & eligibility
$8.54 per month for every other week residential recycling service in the 2026 utility rate schedule, with the same charge for an additional recycling container. City of Walla Walla residential accounts, where the programme is mandatory under state code and municipal code section 8.20.030. Service questions go to Basin Disposal on 509.547.2476 and billing questions to the city on 527.4479, and businesses and multi family complexes over ten units can self haul to Walla Walla Recycling on 509.525.1482.
When & how
Put the recycling container out on the same weekday as the garbage, every other week, three feet from obstacles with the lid opening toward the street. The free drop box at the Sudbury Landfill entrance takes the same materials at any time during landfill hours.
Get it ready
Rinse and empty containers and keep material clean and dry, flatten cardboard, and leave lids off bottles, jugs, tubs and buckets. Only paper, newspaper, mail, magazines, cardboard, tin, aluminium and steel cans and plastics numbered 1, 2 and 5 are accepted, so glass goes in the garbage container and plastics are not accepted at the Walla Walla Recycling drop boxes at 13th and Elm.

Extra material on the ground beside the container is not collected, wedged items stop the container emptying, and an overfilled or too heavy container is charged an additional fee. Take the free trip to Sudbury once a year

A household with current sanitation services receives one landfill courtesy pass a year covering a single free load of residential waste or green waste up to six hundred pounds including tax. Claim it by surrendering a physical copy of the applicable utility bill showing the sanitation charge at the scale house, and print both pages so the charge can be verified. Only one pass per address is honoured and the pass does not cover appliances with refrigerant, medical waste, electronic devices, asbestos, compost or dirt sales or tires.

Separate the streams before the scale

The rate sheet charges general waste loads, a lower rate for a vehicle carrying only cement, asphalt, concrete, soil or rock, and per unit rates for cooling appliances, televisions and computer hardware, and per tire rates for small tire loads. Mixing restricted material with other refuse applies the highest applicable charge to the whole load and the landfill may refuse it, so a clean single stream trip costs less than a mixed one.

Household hazardous waste is refused in the garbage container and goes free to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at the Sudbury Landfill, which serves Walla Walla County residents and refuses business waste.
