Household batteries ride along with the glass bin. Since January 1, 2023 a Hillsboro household that does not share service has recycled common household batteries in the red glass bin at no extra cost, and the batteries that the bin refuses have two named businesses in town.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free to Hillsboro residents who do not share garbage and recycling service with other households, one one-quart zip-sealed bag per pickup on top of the glass in the red bin. Multifamily residents who share service are not eligible for curbside battery recycling and are directed to two Hillsboro businesses that charge a fee.
When & how
Put the bag on top of the glass in the red bin and set it out on the same every-other-week schedule as the glass collection, or take refused batteries to a fee charging battery shop during its own hours.
Get it ready
Tape both ends of button cell, lithium, six-volt, nine-volt, rechargeable and lithium cell batteries, and keep battery back-up units, car batteries and lead-acid batteries out of the bin because they are not recycled curbside. Ask the county's What to Recycle and Where tool for anything the bin refuses.
Household alkaline, button cell and lithium batteries go into one one-quart zip-sealed bag placed on top of the glass in the red bin, with the ends taped on button cell and lithium cells, and the bag is collected on the glass schedule at no extra cost. Battery back-up units, car batteries and lead-acid batteries do not qualify, and a household that shares garbage and recycling service with other units cannot use the bin route.

No charge. Free to households, with a daily limit of 35 gallons measured by container size. Businesses have to apply, make an appointment and pay a fee, and containers and fuel cans cannot be returned.
Arrange it
Take the material to Metro Central on NW 61st Avenue in Portland from Monday through Saturday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., or to Metro South in Oregon City any day between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Pack items upright in a single layer in sturdy boxes, secure the lids, bag anything leaking, and keep products in their original containers with unmarked containers labelled only when the contents are known. Fluorescent tubes should be wrapped rather than taped, and sharps belong in an FDA-cleared red container.

If a device cannot be erased or contains sensitive business information, arrange suitable data handling before giving it away.
