Choose by construction, not height alone. A basic desk is different from a heavy desk with a substantial body. A tall, lightweight bookcase can still be a standard bookshelf. Empty it first.

Furniture is priced piece by piece on the city's bulky item list, so a couch, a sectional, a recliner and a dresser each have a published charge on top of the trip fee. Furniture is also one of the items Metro Central charges as garbage when a household hauls it instead.
City cost & eligibility
$33 per couch on the city's bulky item list, charged on top of the per trip fee. Hillsboro residents using the bulky pickup from their franchised hauler. A sectional is charged per piece at the same rate, a recliner or similar chair and a table over five feet cost less, and a dresser, side chair or book shelf costs less again.
When & how
Book the pickup with the franchised hauler and put the furniture out where the crew can reach it. A household that would rather drive it can take broken furniture to Metro Central, where it is charged as garbage by weight.
Get it ready
Empty the drawers and remove the cushions and loose parts, keep the piece where a driver can reach it from the collection route, and keep furniture out of the garbage and recycling carts. A piece that is still usable is worth donating or listing before it is scheduled for disposal.
At a Metro transfer station the minimum fee covers a load up to 240 pounds, heavier loads are charged by the ton plus a transaction fee, and an uncovered load pays an additional per ton charge. Sort recyclables out for a rebate, declare mattresses and metal appliances so they land on the free lines, and keep vehicles, asbestos, roofing, liquids, burned material and electric vehicle batteries out of the load entirely.

The trip fee is charged even when the item is not out and the pickup was not cancelled, a second driver is billed hourly for an item that is not accessible from the collection route, and a container or drop box for a project load is a separate service with its own schedule.

The container price includes delivery and one pickup or dump, it has to be filled within seven days, and sizes and availability vary by hauler.
Arrange it
Call a franchised hauler, choose the container size, confirm the delivery window, and arrange the pickup when the project is done. A drop box needs a pull at least every thirty days.
A container overfilled past its rated size is billed at the next size up, an overloaded or blocked container draws an extra service charge, and the disposal fee is billed on top of the container and mileage charges.
