Mattresses are priced by size on the city's bulky item list, and Metro Central takes them free from residential customers, up to four a day, with a credit when one arrives in a mixed load.
City cost & eligibility
$9 per twin or double mattress or bedding piece on the city's bulky item list, with queen and king sizes priced higher and each piece charged separately on top of the per trip fee. Hillsboro residents using the bulky pickup from their franchised hauler. Metro Central accepts up to four mattresses or box springs a day free from residential customers, while car beds, foldout sofa beds, futons, crib mattresses, waterbeds and air mattresses are charged as garbage.
When & how
Book the pickup with the franchised hauler, or drive the pieces to Metro Central at 6161 NW 61st Ave. in Portland, open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
Get it ready
Count the mattress and the box spring as separate pieces, because the city list charges each one, and keep them dry and out of the carts. At Metro a mixed load earns a credit for each mattress or box spring, so it pays to declare them at the scale.
At a Metro transfer station the minimum fee covers a load up to 240 pounds, heavier loads are charged by the ton plus a transaction fee, and an uncovered load pays an additional per ton charge. Sort recyclables out for a rebate, declare mattresses and metal appliances so they land on the free lines, and keep vehicles, asbestos, roofing, liquids, burned material and electric vehicle batteries out of the load entirely.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.

From $22 per bulky item pickup trip at the rate the city council approved, with a separate item charge for each piece from the adopted list. Hillsboro residents served by one of the six franchised haulers. The item list covers couches, sectionals, chairs, tables, dressers, shelves, file cabinets, mattresses by size, appliances and more, and anything unlisted is priced by the hauler.
Arrange it
Call the hauler that serves the address, name every item, take the quoted item charges plus the trip fee, and put the load where the crew can reach it on the arranged day.
The trip fee is charged even when the item is not out and the pickup was not cancelled, a second driver is billed hourly for an item that is not accessible from the collection route, and a container or drop box for a project load is a separate service with its own schedule.

Open to the general public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, closed to the public on the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's days. The co-located hazardous waste facility keeps shorter hours, Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed Sunday.
