$16 per water heater, stove, washer, dryer or dishwasher on the city's bulky item list, charged on top of the per trip fee, with a microwave and a barbecue without a tank priced lower. Hillsboro residents using the bulky pickup from their franchised hauler. Metro Central accepts metal dishwashers, microwaves, water heaters, stoves, ovens, washers and dryers free from residential customers, charges coolant appliances separately, and bills a dishwasher with a plastic casing as garbage.
When & how
Book the pickup with the franchised hauler or take the unit to Metro Central during public hours, and drain a water heater before it leaves the property.
Get it ready
Empty the appliance and drain a water heater, keep the tank off a barbecue, and keep every appliance out of the garbage and recycling carts. Say at the Metro scale that the unit is a metal appliance so it is credited as a free item rather than charged as garbage.
A cooling appliance has its own line in both price lists: the city charges the highest bulky rate for a residential refrigerator, freezer or portable air conditioner, and Metro Central charges a coolant appliance fee with a daily limit.

The item list covers couches, sectionals, chairs, tables, dressers, shelves, file cabinets, mattresses by size, appliances and more, and anything unlisted is priced by the hauler.

Call the hauler that serves the address, name every item, take the quoted item charges plus the trip fee, and put the load where the crew can reach it on the arranged day.
The trip fee is charged even when the item is not out and the pickup was not cancelled, a second driver is billed hourly for an item that is not accessible from the collection route, and a container or drop box for a project load is a separate service with its own schedule.

Open to the general public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, closed to the public on the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's days. The co-located hazardous waste facility keeps shorter hours, Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed Sunday.
