Metal appliances such as dishwashers, microwaves, water heaters, stoves, ovens, clothes washers and dryers drop at Metro Central at no charge, while appliances built to hold coolant carry a published per appliance rate with a daily limit.
City cost & eligibility
$30 per coolant appliance at Metro Central, where dishwashers, microwaves, water heaters, stoves, ovens, clothes washers and dryers are accepted at no charge from residential customers. Air conditioners, freezers, refrigerators and dehumidifiers are limited to five per day per person, and dishwashers with a plastic casing are charged as garbage instead. Heiberg also quotes oversized items separately.
When & how
Drop the appliance at Metro Central on the hours Metro publishes on its transfer station page. A hauler pickup has to be arranged by phone on the day Heiberg sets.
Get it ready
Have the appliance ready to unload yourself at the transfer station, and keep household hazardous waste separate, because the hazardous waste facilities next to the transfer stations keep different hours and requirements. Empty the unit before it is moved.
Heiberg asks residents to set containers out by 6 a.m. on the collection day and to take them back in within twenty four hours of pickup. Keep the load within the container, because extra cans are limited to thirty two gallons and forty pounds.
The hauler closes only on Christmas and New Year's Day
Heiberg is closed only on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. When either falls on a Thursday, the Maywood Park collection moves to the following day, and garbage is still collected on Thanksgiving. Snow, ice, heat or poor air quality can change the schedule, and the hauler posts updates.
Electronics, batteries and glass stay out of the recycling
The hauler's refused list covers computers, monitors, televisions, batteries, compact fluorescent bulbs, hazardous waste and charcoal, and a second list refuses light bulbs, drinking glasses, vases, broken glass, ceramics and heat resistant glassware along with plastic bags, caps and lids, foam, propane cylinders and coffee cups.
