Containers and bulk go out the evening before the zone day
Every address in Harrisburg is served once a week on its own weekday zone, and the containers go to the appointed collection location the evening before that day. The city provides the standard trash and recycling containers, extra recycling bins are free, and questions about a container, its placement or an account go to the sanitation office on 717-412-4320.
The weekly bulk entitlement is one item, and the city states plainly that only one is collected each week while all others are subject to a fine and that bulk items must not be piled in front of the property. Collection dates are updated through the year for city holidays and furlough days, and a citywide holiday delays collection by one day for the rest of that week, so a Friday route moves to Saturday. The published schedule is the authority for the week rather than the usual zone day.

The city splits material carefully: glass windows, mirrors and ceramics, food and food-soiled paper, plastic bags, light bulbs and garden hoses belong in the trash bin, while plastics 1, 2 and 5, aluminum and steel cans, cartons and flattened corrugated boxes belong in the recycling bin. Glass bottles and jars are separated and taken to one of the ten drop off sites, and the city's recycler does not want office paper, junk mail or shredded paper, which go in the trash unless the household arranges a separate collection.
