Filled bags and boxes
Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard and containers
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.
Furniture and other larger items
Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

A mattress goes out on the city bulky collection by appointment, and the city counts a mattress with its matching box spring as one item. The county also runs a mandatory mattress recycling programme with a published fee for each piece.
City cost & eligibility
$10 per bulky item for the first three items on the city collection, where a mattress and its matching box spring count as one item. The city charges are added to the water bill, and only the person listed on the water bill may schedule the pickup. At the county mattress recycling programme a separate $25.00 fee applies to each mattress and each box spring, paid to the recycling partner.
When & how
Call the Solid Waste Department at 615-893-3681 to schedule the pickup, which is generally available with 48 hours notice between January 9 and December 24, and set the piece out on the confirmed date.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress and its matching box spring together so they count as one item, put the piece on your own property no less than five feet from the curb, and do not place it out before 7 p.m. the day before or later than 7 a.m. on the collection day. Nothing else is collected in the same stop.
Furniture is named in the city's bulk refuse definition and also appears in the county's bulk item examples, so a couch either goes out on a scheduled city pickup or is dropped at a county convenience center. The city charges per item.
City cost & eligibility
From $10 per bulky item for the first three items on the city collection, with each item beyond three charged at the higher published rate. City charges are added to the water bill and only the water bill account holder may schedule the pickup. County convenience centers take household waste and up to three bulk items a day from Rutherford County residents, so a self haul is the alternative at no charge for the household waste itself.
When & how
Schedule a city pickup with 48 hours notice, or take the furniture to a county convenience center during its open hours, keeping in mind that the centers accept household garbage only on Sundays.
Get it ready
Place a scheduled piece on your own property no less than five feet from the curb, and keep it separate from other waste because the city does not collect anything else in the same stop. Drain oil and fuel from any push lawn mower before it goes out, since the ordinance requires it.
Appliances, air conditioners and metal objects are refused by the city's collection, and the county's published lists do not name appliances for the convenience centers or the transfer station, so the route has to be confirmed by phone.
City cost & eligibility
No appliance rate or destination is published. The city ordinance excludes appliances, air conditioners and metal objects from collection, and the county pages name neither an appliance drop-off nor a fee, so call the city Solid Waste Department at 615-893-3681 and Rutherford County Solid Waste at 615-848-7739 to confirm where the unit goes and what it costs.
When & how
Confirm the destination before moving the unit. The county transfer station accepts municipal solid waste for a tipping fee but refuses several categories, and its own mattress notice directs oversized and special material elsewhere.
Get it ready
Empty the appliance and secure or remove the doors, and keep it out of the garbage container, which takes only bagged household refuse. Do not put an appliance in a bulk pile, because the city refuses appliances and metal objects outright.
Electronics are refused at the city's mobile hazardous waste collections and taken free at the county convenience centers, where monitors and televisions are named on the accepted list for Rutherford County residents.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Rutherford County convenience centers accept select electronics from county residents at no cost, including laptops and desktop computers, phones and tablets, game consoles, media, monitors and televisions, cords and chargers, and small devices with a cord or internal battery.
When & how
Take the equipment to a center that accepts electronics, such as Leanna on Sulphur Springs Road, Smyrna on G Street or Rockvale on Rockvale Road, during their published hours. Business or large quantity loads go to City eWaste at 615-807-0520 instead.
Get it ready
Wipe personal data before the device is handed over, keep the cords with the equipment, and keep batteries, light bulbs, medical devices, liquids and hazardous material out of the electronics load, because the county refuses all of those. Large household appliances are not part of the programme.
Building debris such as scrap lumber, plaster, roofing, concrete, brick and paint is refused by the city, and the county convenience centers also refuse construction and demolition material. Those loads go to the Rutherford County Transfer Station.
City cost & eligibility
From $50 for the flat cash customer rate for a load between one and 999 pounds at the Rutherford County Transfer Station under the rates that took effect July 1, 2026. Customers without an account pay the cash customer gate rate, and the published schedule runs from the flat rate for small loads to a per ton rate from one ton upward, with higher monthly tonnage tiers for account holders. Rutherford County residential waste itself is free at the convenience centers, but those centers refuse construction and demolition debris.
When & how
Take the load to the transfer station at 6025 Landfill Road, Murfreesboro, which is open Monday to Friday 4 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 6 a.m. to noon, with residential customers asked to arrive between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. on weekdays.
Get it ready
Wear a hard hat and high visibility clothing, because the transfer station requires both inside the site, and keep tires, concrete slabs, batteries, liquids, drums, asbestos and hazardous waste out of the load because those are refused. The county landfill no longer accepts construction or demolition material.
Exercise equipment is not named in the city's bulk definition, which covers boxes, furniture, drained push lawn mowers and toys, and the ordinance refuses riding lawn mowers and similar equipment, so the machine is confirmed with the department first.
City cost & eligibility
No exercise machine rate is published. The city charges per bulky item but its definition and exclusions do not name exercise equipment, so call the Solid Waste Department at 615-893-3681 and confirm that the machine is collected before it goes out.
When & how
Confirm the item first, then schedule the city pickup with the required notice, or take the machine to a county convenience center as household bulk material if the county accepts it.
Get it ready
Break the machine down to what two people can lift, keep it out of the garbage container, and place it on your own property no less than five feet from the curb if the city confirms the pickup. Drain any oil or fuel if the machine has an engine, as the ordinance requires for lawn equipment.
The city bulky programme is appointment only, with published per item charges and a rule that no other waste goes out in the same stop. County convenience centers take up to three bulk items a day from county residents as the alternative.
City cost & eligibility
From $10 per bulky item for the first three items on the city collection, with each item beyond three charged at the higher published rate of thirty dollars. City charges are added to the water bill and only the person listed on the water bill may schedule a collection. County convenience centers take household waste and up to three bulk items a day without charge for Rutherford County residents.
When & how
Call 615-893-3681 to schedule a city pickup, generally with 48 hours notice between January 9 and December 24, or use a county convenience center during its open hours, remembering that on Sundays those centers accept household garbage only.
Get it ready
Place bulk items on your own property at least five feet from the curb between 7 p.m. the day before and 7 a.m. on the collection day, and keep them separate from garbage and yard waste. From December 26 through January 9 only flattened and tied boxes go out as bulk items and call-in pickup is closed.
Murfreesboro provides a free 96 gallon cart emptied once a week and collects household garbage and yard waste Monday through Thursday. Refuse has to be bagged or wrapped before it goes in the container, personal trash cans are not serviced, and anything left loose beside the cart is not collected.
Bulky items need a confirmed date before they go out
No bulk refuse may be placed out until the owner has contacted the Solid Waste Department and confirmed a pickup date, which is generally available with 48 hours notice between January 9 and December 24. Items go on the occupant's private property at least five feet from the curb between 7 p.m. the day before and 7 a.m. on the collection day, and no garbage or other waste is collected in the same stop.
Between December 26 and January 9 only boxes go out
During the Christmas season from December 26 through January 9 bulk items may be boxes only, flattened and tied together, and bulk pickup is not available on a call-in basis in that window. The scheduled service resumes on the normal terms after January 9.
County centers take household waste and three bulk items a day
The Rutherford County convenience centers are for county residents only and accept household waste and recyclables, with bulk items limited to three per day and household garbage the only stream the centers take on Sundays. The centers are closed on Thursdays, and commercial waste and construction or demolition debris are refused there and must go to the transfer station.
Grass and leaves go loose or in moisture resistant biodegradable bags of about 32 gallons or less, with plastic bags prohibited and nothing placed in the automated container. Yard refuse is cut to no more than ten feet long and eight inches in diameter, Christmas trees count as yard waste only when ornaments and lights are removed, and fluorescent bulbs have to be bagged, wrapped or taped.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.

Before you book
A few things worth knowing.
Bulk junk removal, from choosing your item to pickup day in Murfreesboro.
How much does bulk junk removal cost in Murfreesboro?+
A trash bag is $59 as the first item and $10 additional. A filled household box is $59 as the first item. Add your actual items and quantities to see the combined price before booking. Loading, transportation and disposal are included; any applicable sales tax is shown before payment.
Can you pick up bags of junk today?+
Book by 2pm in the pickup address’s local time for same-day pickup. Available dates appear at checkout. Have the booked bags and boxes outside and accessible according to your confirmation. You receive pickup updates and completion photos; the booking is for a day rather than an exact arrival time.
Do I count every object inside a bag or box?+
No. Count the filled bags or boxes using the matching choice. Books and media go in Filled household box; clothes, bedding and shoes go in Bag of clothes & bedding; packed toys have a Box of toys choice. Empty cardboard is separate, with individual empty boxes and bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Heavy, oversized or unusual contents need a photo review before booking.
Can you pick up a small loose pile of household junk?+
Yes. Estimate how many trash bags the small household pile would fill, and bag or box as much as possible. Select furniture and other larger items separately. There is no extra charge just because the pile is loose. Send a photo first if the count or contents are unclear. A household Dumpster Bag choice does not accept construction debris.
Can I book bags, boxes and furniture together?+
Yes. Select the bags and boxes, then add each larger item using its own catalog choice. The booking shows one combined price for the selected items. Move everything to an accessible outdoor spot before pickup; indoor carrying and sorting are not included. Keep anything you want to retain apart from the booked items and identify what goes in your photos and notes.
How much does a Murfreesboro mattress pickup cost?+
The city charges per bulky item, ten dollars for each of the first three items, and a mattress with its matching box spring counts as one item. Charges are added to the water bill, the pickup needs to be scheduled with the Solid Waste Department at 615-893-3681, and only the account holder on the water bill may book it.Official guidance
Where can a mattress be recycled instead?+
Rutherford County requires mattresses and box springs to be recycled through Spring Back Recycling at designated convenience centers, including Leanna on Sulphur Springs Road, Smyrna on G Street and Rockvale on Rockvale Road. The county sets a fee for each mattress and each box spring, paid directly to the recycling partner, and the transfer station no longer accepts them in its waste stream.Official guidance
Will the city take a couch from the curb?+
Only by appointment. Furniture is part of the bulk refuse definition, the pickup has to be scheduled with the Solid Waste Department at 615-893-3681, and city crews will not collect furniture left out without a confirmed date. The charges run per item and land on the water bill.Official guidance
Can furniture go to a county convenience center?+
Yes. The county centers are for Rutherford County residential use and take household waste along with up to three bulk items a day, with a couch, a chair, a mattress, a lamp or other household furniture named as bulk examples. They are closed on Thursdays, and on Sundays those centers accept household garbage only.Official guidance
Why will the city not take a refrigerator?+
The solid waste ordinance excludes appliances, air conditioners and metal objects from city collection, along with automotive waste, carpet, building debris and hazardous material, so those items never ride the curbside route. The county's lists do not name an appliance drop-off either, so confirm the destination with the county at 615-848-7739.Official guidance
Does the county take metal items?+
The county convenience centers accept all bulk metal at every location except Haley Road, and the waste disposal page lists glass food containers and bulk metal as materials placed in separate containers on site. Large household appliances are listed as not accepted in the county's electronics programme, so metal scrap and appliances are not the same route.Official guidance
Where do televisions and computers go in Murfreesboro?+
To a Rutherford County convenience center that accepts electronics, which lists monitors and televisions along with computers, phones, tablets, game consoles, cords and small devices. The service is free for county residents, and the city's mobile hazardous waste collections no longer take electronics.Official guidance
What electronics are refused at the county centers?+
Tool, lithium ion and standalone household batteries, damaged or swollen batteries, all light bulbs, medical and clinical devices, hazardous waste and liquids, electronic waste from businesses or organisations, and large household appliances are all refused. Business or large loads are directed to City eWaste at 615-807-0520.Official guidance
Can building debris go to the Murfreesboro curb?+
No. The solid waste ordinance excludes building debris such as scrap lumber, plaster, roofing, concrete, brick, paint and paint cans, and plumbing debris from city collection, and the county convenience centers refuse construction and demolition material as well. The transfer station is the published destination.Official guidance
How is a construction load priced at the county gate?+
The transfer station charges a tipping fee based on the load, with the published cash customer schedule running from a flat rate for loads between one and 999 pounds to a per ton rate from one ton upward under the rates effective July 1, 2026. Customers who expect to haul regularly can apply for an account for reduced tonnage rates.Official guidance
Will Murfreesboro take a treadmill as a bulky item?+
Ask first. The bulk refuse definition names boxes, furniture, push lawn mowers with the oil and fuel drained and toys, and the ordinance refuses riding lawn mowers and similar equipment, so an exercise machine is confirmed with the Solid Waste Department at 615-893-3681 before it is set out.Official guidance
What are the city bulky item charges?+
The city charges ten dollars per item for the first three items and thirty dollars for each item beyond three, with the charges added to the water bill. A mattress with its matching box spring counts as one item, and so do a matching headboard, footboard and bed rails or a sectional sofa.Official guidance
What changes over the winter holidays?+
From December 26 through January 9 the bulk collection takes only boxes, flattened and tied together, and call-in bulk pickup is not available at all in that window. The rest of the year the pickup is generally available with 48 hours notice between January 9 and December 24.Official guidance
How does garbage collection work in Murfreesboro?+
The city provides a free 96 gallon cart emptied once a week and collects household garbage and yard waste Monday through Thursday, with a weekly residential fee of $13.50. Additional carts can be purchased, and the solid waste office answers at 615-893-3681 from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.Official guidance
Will the city pick up whatever I leave at the curb?+
No. The city empties what is inside the garbage container only, and furniture or other bulky pieces need an appointment through 615-893-3681. The ordinance also refuses appliances, building debris, carpet, automotive waste, chemicals, metal objects and similar material no matter how it is set out.Official guidance
Which county sites can a Murfreesboro household use?+
The Rutherford County convenience centers, including Leanna on Sulphur Springs Road, are open to county residents with proof of residency for household waste, up to three bulk items a day, recyclables, bulk metal, electronics, oil based paint and bulbs, and the mattress recycling programme. Construction and demolition material, commercial waste and hazardous waste are refused there and go to the transfer station or a collection event.Official guidance
Why are mattresses a special case?+
Rutherford County began requiring mattress and box spring recycling on August 1, 2026 because the pieces consume landfill space, and a fee applies to each mattress and each box spring at the designated centers, paid to the recycling partner. The transfer station stopped accepting them through its waste stream, and the city still counts a mattress with its matching box spring as one bulky item on its own route.Official guidance
