The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Leesburg runs its own curbside contract with Patriot Disposal Services for trash, recycling and yard waste at single family homes, townhomes and some businesses inside the town corporate limits, and service starts automatically with no account to open. Furniture, mattresses, appliances, televisions and other oversized items are collected by request only, never on a regular trash day, and the town publishes a per item fee schedule for them. A load the curb will not take can go to the Loudoun County landfill on Evergreen Mills Road, which takes county-generated material by weight and refuses lithium batteries, gasoline and gas mixtures, registered vehicles, tractor trailer loads, land clearing debris and commercial inert waste. The county's accepted and unaccepted materials guide carries the conditions for the rest, including its asbestos and propane tank rules.

Televisions, computers and other electronics

Special rules apply

Televisions are priced by screen size on the town bulk schedule, with the smallest band listed without a charge and each larger band priced higher, while computers, laptops, printers and stereos carry listed prices of their own.

City cost & eligibility

Check that your address is inside the town limits

The town contracts with Patriot Disposal Services for curbside trash, recycling and yard waste at single family homes, townhomes and some businesses inside the corporate limits, and service starts without an account. Some addresses that carry a Leesburg mailing address sit outside the corporate limits and are served by a homeowners association or a permitted county hauler instead, so confirm at 703-771-2790 before you count on a town pickup.

Town toters, set-out window and storage

Each routed household is issued a black trash Toter and a blue recycling Toter with wheels and attached lids, 96 gallon toters for single family homes and 64 gallon toters for townhomes. Trash may go to the curb after 4:00 p.m. the day before pickup and before 4:00 a.m. on the collection day, containers come back in within 12 hours of collection, and empty containers are stored behind the front line of the building.

Bulky items need a request first

Furniture, appliances, mattresses and other items that will not fit in a plastic bag or a can are never collected on a regular trash day, and the town does not treat an item left out without a request as a missed pickup. Call or email Patriot Disposal Services to book the pickup, then keep the pile separate from the trash, the recycling and the yard waste so nothing gets left behind.

Yard waste runs April to November and brush runs year round

Yard waste is collected town-wide on Mondays from April 6 through November 30 in brown paper bags or in cans carrying a yard waste sticker, with a limit of 10 bags or cans per pickup, and from December through March bagged yard waste rides with the regular trash. Yard waste from paid contract work is the contractor's responsibility. Tree limbs are a separate service: the Street Division picks up brush at no charge, so stack limbs between 4 feet and 8 feet long and under 6 inches in diameter at the curb by Sunday evening and keep each pile inside the published volume limit.

Recycling gets checked for contamination

Collection staff inspect recycling bins in targeted neighborhoods and tag a bin that holds batteries, needles, hazardous waste, food or yard waste, plastic bags and film, bagged recyclables, textiles, scrap metal or construction debris. A tagged bin is left behind, and the town returns within two business days once the contamination is removed, so keep batteries, electronics and building material out of the recycling Toter.

Take the load to the Loudoun County landfill

A resident who would rather haul the item, including construction debris, treated wood, tires or a cooling appliance, to the county facility on Evergreen Mills Road.

Cost & conditions
From $8 for a minimum of $8 per vehicle, with municipal solid waste and vegetative waste at $78 per ton and construction and demolition waste at $85 per ton, plus per item charges for a refrigerated appliance at $30, a car tire at $10, a truck tire at $15 and a tire on a rim at $30. Material generated in Loudoun County, with cash and credit or debit cards accepted. Tires are limited to residential, government and nonprofit customers at four a day, and commercial customers bringing construction and demolition waste must document the waste origin on arrival.
Arrange it
Enter at 21101 Evergreen Mills Road in Leesburg, sort the load before you arrive, and declare a refrigerated appliance, a tire or a propane tank to the scale operator. The published note says the main gate closes at 4:00 p.m. and that all customers must return to the scales by 4:30 p.m.

Only waste generated in Loudoun County is accepted, tractor trailer loads and land clearing debris are refused, commercial inert waste such as dirt, rock, sand or soil is refused, and registered vehicles are not accepted. Curbside collection is not provided by the county, so this route is a haul it yourself trip.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

A Leesburg household inside the town limits puts trash and recycling in the town issued toters and can place extra bagged trash beside the Toter, but a couch, mattress, appliance, television or any other oversized item has to be requested from Patriot Disposal Services first and is never taken on the regular trash day. Yard waste follows the Monday season, and tree limbs go out for the Street Division brush pass. If you would rather haul the load yourself, the Loudoun County landfill at 21101 Evergreen Mills Road takes material generated in the county, charges by weight with a minimum, adds per item charges for a refrigerated appliance and for tires, and requires a cooling appliance or a tire to be declared to the scale operator on arrival.
