Desks and bookshelves
Choose by construction, not height alone. A basic desk is different from a heavy desk with a substantial body. A tall, lightweight bookcase can still be a standard bookshelf. Empty it first.

No charge. Included in the residential collection service billed on the monthly water and sewer statement, with no separate fee published for a scheduled pickup or for taking the piece to an SPSA transfer station inside the first twelve free visits a year. When & how
Book the pickup before the piece goes out, because requests close the day before and the day of your collection day, and the pile is collected on your normal trash day.
Get it ready
Strip out anything you are keeping, leave drawers and doors closed, put the piece at the curb before the scheduled day, and keep it clear of cars, mailboxes, poles and meters. Upholstered furniture never goes in a trash can, and the city does not run bulk from multifamily complexes, businesses or vacant lots.
The set out window is the night before or early morning
Refuse goes out after 5 p.m. the day before collection and by 7 a.m. on the collection day, cans need three feet of clearance from mailboxes, parked cars and other obstacles, lids have to close, and empty cans come off the curb by 7 p.m. that same day.
Book bulk before the cutoff, not on collection day
Bulk waste has to be scheduled before it goes out, and requests close the day before and the day of your collection day. A Thursday address has to submit by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, and anything left at the curb without an appointment can draw a removal notice and fines.
Tires, white goods and cardboard set out for collection have to be separated from bulk refuse, and every bulk pile sits at the curb rather than in a public alley, clear of water meters, cable boxes, power lines, utility poles and tree limbs.
