A mattress is not named on the city bulk form, so it goes out on a scheduled pickup when the division confirms it, or it goes to an SPSA transfer station, where mattresses are named as acceptable household waste.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included in the residential collection service billed on the monthly water and sewer statement, so a scheduled pickup carries no separate published fee, and SPSA takes a mattress free inside the first twelve visits a calendar year for residents with proof of residence. When & how
Schedule the pickup online or at 757-393-8629 before the mattress goes out, or take it to an SPSA transfer station such as Chesapeake at 901 Hollowell Lane on Monday or Saturday morning, or Landstown at 1825 Concert Drive on weekdays and Saturday morning.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry, set it at the curb before the scheduled day, clear of cars, mailboxes, poles and meters, and separate from tires, white goods and cardboard. Confirm a wrapped or unusually heavy mattress with the division before the pickup.
The set out window is the night before or early morning
Refuse goes out after 5 p.m. the day before collection and by 7 a.m. on the collection day, cans need three feet of clearance from mailboxes, parked cars and other obstacles, lids have to close, and empty cans come off the curb by 7 p.m. that same day.
Book bulk before the cutoff, not on collection day
Bulk waste has to be scheduled before it goes out, and requests close the day before and the day of your collection day. A Thursday address has to submit by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, and anything left at the curb without an appointment can draw a removal notice and fines.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.

Arrange it
