The town refuses appliances in the bulk pile, so they go to the Fairfax County transfer station, which charges a unit price for any appliance that needs refrigerant or a capacitor removed.
City cost & eligibility
From $15 per appliance that requires the removal of refrigerant or a capacitor at the Fairfax County I-66 Transfer Station, covering refrigerators, freezers, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, water coolers and air conditioners. Fairfax County residents, with proof of residency possibly required and the fee schedule running July 2026 through June 2027; metal must arrive with the gas, oil, fluid and freon removed when it goes in as scrap metal instead.
When & how
Take the appliance to the I-66 Transfer Station on West Ox Road during its residential hours, or to the town's Quarterly Recycling Day as scrap metal if all fluids and freon have been removed.
Get it ready
Empty the appliance, secure the doors so nothing can be trapped inside, keep a cooling unit upright, and keep appliances out of the town bulk pile, which refuses them.
Trash, recycling, yard waste, brush and the bulk pile all go out by 6 a.m. on the household's weekly collection day and no earlier than 6 p.m. the evening before, at the curb line or edge of pavement where the crews can reach them, out of the sidewalk and the traffic right of way. Containers come back in by 7 p.m. on the collection day, and the town sends five separate trucks, one for each stream.
Appliances, mattresses, tires, small construction loads, chemicals and all electronics go to Fairfax County rather than the town curb. The I-66 Transfer Station on West Ox Road takes residential trash and recycling Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., with hazardous waste and e-waste open six days a week and closed Wednesday, and proof of county residency may be required at the gate.

Arrange it
Drive to 4618E West Ox Road at Fairfax during residential hours, check in at the scales for a charged load, and use the separate hazardous waste and e-waste area for chemicals and electronics.
Proof of Fairfax County residency may be required, commercial hazardous waste is not accepted, tire disposal from businesses is suspended, brick, concrete, dirt and rocks are limited to two cubic yards a day per household, and the site closes on Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day and Easter Sunday.

Cost & conditions
No charge. The town runs the quarterly recycling days four times a year at the Northside Property Yard and publishes no charge for the accepted materials; televisions and computer monitors are excluded and go to the county instead.
Arrange it
Watch the town calendar for the first Saturday of March, June, September or December and drop the material at the Northside Property Yard between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., entering from 600 Mill Street NE or 600 Glyndon Street NE.
Only four days a year, tires are not accepted, televisions and monitors are not accepted, and scrap metal has to arrive with all gas, oil, fluid, freon and glass removed.
