Recology collects garbage, recycling and organics for every City of Bothell customer, and the city's own rules are mostly about preparation. Recyclables have to be empty, clean and dry, with jars and bottles rinsed and the blue cart lid closed so paper stays dry, and nothing may be bagged because loose plastic bags jam the sorting machinery. The compost cart takes meat, bones and shells, dairy and eggs, fruit and vegetable scraps with the stickers taken off, spoiled leftovers, food soiled paper and napkins, yard trimmings and untreated wood, while pet waste and glass must never go in. Service days come from the city map or the Recology calendar, and a missed collection is reported to the city and to Recology on (425) 453-0220 within 24 hours.
Two bulky pickups a year are built into the service
The kerbside answer for anything that will not fit a cart is a booked bulky item pickup, and the city has included two of them a year at no extra cost since July 1, 2025. Recology's scheduling form is the booking route, and the examples the city gives are the three items this guide is asked about most often: sofas, mattresses and large appliances. A household that would rather haul its own material can use the voucher route instead, and a household that still has the item after two bookings has to wait for the next year or use a voucher or a special item pickup.
Vouchers, drop-offs and the hazardous waste mobile
The city issues two vouchers worth thirty dollars each per household per year towards recycling CFC appliances, clean wood, yard waste, mattresses and box springs at the Shoreline Recycling and Transfer Station at 2300 N 165th St., which opens Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Vouchers are requested online or collected at the Recology Store, must be requested by November 1 and used by November 30, and any charge above the voucher value is the resident's to pay. Much of the rest of the special material is also handled at that station: rigid styrofoam blocks, clothing and other textiles, and plastic film are accepted there free, although garbage bags and plastic seal bags are prohibited. Small electronics, small appliances under 2 feet, batteries, oils, styrofoam and textiles can also be booked as a special item pickup, larger e-waste goes to the free E-Cycle Washington programme, paint goes to PaintCare drop-offs, and household chemicals go to the King County Wastemobile when it visits the UW Bothell campus at 18115 Campus Way NE from 10 am to 5 pm on its published dates.

Can I book if the delivery company did not take my old appliance?+
Yes. Dropcurb pickup is separate from buying or installing a replacement, so you can book removal on its own. Select the old appliance, choose a pickup day and arrange for it to be disconnected and accessible outside. If your new delivery is still ahead, confirm the retailer’s haul-away arrangements before booking a separate pickup.
