The local disposal guide
Bothell contracts Recology for garbage, single stream recycling and organics, and it adds two routes of its own for everything that will not fit in a cart. Since July 1, 2025 a residential customer may book up to two bulky item pickups a year at no extra cost, and those pickups take exactly the kind of thing this guide is about, sofas, mattresses and large appliances, straight from the kerb. A second route covers the rest: the city issues two vouchers worth thirty dollars each year towards recycling CFC appliances, clean wood, yard waste, mattresses and box springs at the Shoreline Recycling and Transfer Station, which is also the free drop-off for rigid styrofoam, textiles and plastic film, while household batteries, oils, styrofoam, textiles and small electronics come off the kerb through a Recology special item pickup. Electronics above two feet in any direction or sixty pounds go to E-Cycle Washington instead, and household chemicals ride the King County Wastemobile when it visits the UW Bothell campus.

The handoff matters
Recology collects garbage, recycling and organics for every City of Bothell customer, and the city's own rules are mostly about preparation. Recyclables have to be empty, clean and dry, with jars and bottles rinsed and the blue cart lid closed so paper stays dry, and nothing may be bagged because loose plastic bags jam the sorting machinery. The compost cart takes meat, bones and shells, dairy and eggs, fruit and vegetable scraps with the stickers taken off, spoiled leftovers, food soiled paper and napkins, yard trimmings and untreated wood, while pet waste and glass must never go in. Service days come from the city map or the Recology calendar, and a missed collection is reported to the city and to Recology on (425) 453-0220 within 24 hours.
City garbage, recycling and compost page with the Recology contract, the empty clean and dry recycling rules, the compost accepted list and the missed collection contactsThe kerbside answer for anything that will not fit a cart is a booked bulky item pickup, and the city has included two of them a year at no extra cost since July 1, 2025. Recology's scheduling form is the booking route, and the examples the city gives are the three items this guide is asked about most often: sofas, mattresses and large appliances. A household that would rather haul its own material can use the voucher route instead, and a household that still has the item after two bookings has to wait for the next year or use a voucher or a special item pickup.
City special item recycling and disposal page with the two free bulky pickups a year, the thirty dollar recycling vouchers, the Shoreline transfer station address and hours, the voucher programme rules and the drop-off lists for styrofoam, textiles, plastic film, batteries, paint and electronicsThe city issues two vouchers worth thirty dollars each per household per year towards recycling CFC appliances, clean wood, yard waste, mattresses and box springs at the Shoreline Recycling and Transfer Station at 2300 N 165th St., which opens Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Vouchers are requested online or collected at the Recology Store, must be requested by November 1 and used by November 30, and any charge above the voucher value is the resident's to pay. Much of the rest of the special material is also handled at that station: rigid styrofoam blocks, clothing and other textiles, and plastic film are accepted there free, although garbage bags and plastic seal bags are prohibited. Small electronics, small appliances under 2 feet, batteries, oils, styrofoam and textiles can also be booked as a special item pickup, larger e-waste goes to the free E-Cycle Washington programme, paint goes to PaintCare drop-offs, and household chemicals go to the King County Wastemobile when it visits the UW Bothell campus at 18115 Campus Way NE from 10 am to 5 pm on its published dates.

Yes, through a bulky item pickup booked with Recology, which is the route the city names for items that do not fit in the carts, including sofas, mattresses and large appliances. Since July 1, 2025 a residential customer may request up to two bulky item pickups per year at no extra cost, so a couch uses one of the two bookings for that year.Official guidance
One of the two free bulky item pickups each household may book a year with Recology will take it from the kerb, because the city names mattresses among the items that do not fit in the carts. A household that would rather haul it can request one of the two thirty dollar recycling vouchers the city issues each year, which cover mattresses and box springs at the Shoreline Recycling and Transfer Station, available from January 1 to November 30 with any cost above the voucher value paid by the resident.Official guidance
A large appliance counts as a bulky item that will not fit in the carts, so it can go out on one of the two free pickups a household may book each year with Recology. The city also issues two thirty dollar recycling vouchers a year towards self hauled disposal of refrigerant type appliances at the Shoreline Transfer Station, and non-refrigerant appliances can be recycled at that station for no fee, with any cost above the voucher value paid by the resident.Official guidance
Devices up to 2 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet can be scheduled on a Recology special item pickup, and the same rule of smaller than 2 feet in any direction with a 60 pound limit applies to electronics booked through the e-waste route, while the Recology Store takes small appliances under 2 feet for drop-off. Anything larger goes to E-Cycle Washington, which the city describes as a free programme for Washington residents. No pickup fee is published, so confirm it with Recology.Official guidance
Two a year at no extra cost. The city says that beginning July 1, 2025 residential customers may request up to two bulky item pickups per year through Recology, using the bulky item scheduling form, for items that do not fit in the curbside carts such as sofas, mattresses and large appliances. Anything the bulky service will not take still has a route, through the special item pickup, the thirty dollar recycling vouchers, E-Cycle Washington or the Wastemobile.Official guidance
Recology King County provides garbage, recycling and organics collection to all City of Bothell customers under the city contract, with billing and account management moving to a new Recology customer portal from February 2026. Recyclables go in the blue cart empty, clean and dry and never bagged, organics go in the compost cart with stickers off and no pet waste or glass, and missed collections are reported to the city and to Recology on (425) 453-0220 within 24 hours or by email to bothell@recology.com.Official guidance

A residential customer books them with Recology through the bulky item scheduling form, and they cover items that do not fit in the curbside carts, with sofas, mattresses and large appliances named as examples. A household with more material still has the voucher route, the special item pickup and the county drop-offs rather than unlimited kerbside collection.Official guidance
The city issues up to two vouchers worth thirty dollars each per household a year, while supplies last, for residents inside Bothell city limits. Request them through the city form or collect them at the Recology Store.Official guidance
