The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Mountlake Terrace households have curbside garbage every week and recycling with food and yard waste every other week from Waste Management, and anything bulky is booked with the same company as a paid special arrangement. The other route is closer than most cities have: the Snohomish County Southwest Recycling and Transfer Station sits inside Mountlake Terrace at 21311 61st Place West and is open seven days a week, charging one garbage fee per vehicle, with free residential recycling for appliances that do not contain refrigerant, lawn mowers, scrap metal and yard waste alternatives. Televisions and computers go to E-Cycle Washington instead.

City cost & eligibility

Washers, dryers, stoves and other appliances

Accepted with preparation

The county recycling area takes washers and dryers, stoves and ranges, hot water tanks, microwaves and metal-housing dishwashers free for residential customers, as long as the unit is free of garbage and contains no refrigerant or CFCs.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Residential customers using the recycling area at the Southwest Recycling and Transfer Station for household appliances without refrigerant or CFCs, with the item free of garbage. Take the appliance to 21311 61st Place West during the posted hours, tell the attendant it is going to the recycling area, and unload it yourself. Waste Management can also collect an appliance by special arrangement for a fee on 1-800-592-9995.
Get it ready
Empty the unit, remove all garbage from inside and around it, and drain the fluids from a lawn mower and take the battery out before it goes in the load. Refrigerators, freezers and cooling appliances

Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, heat pumps, dehumidifiers and water coolers are on the Snohomish County prohibited list, so a cooling appliance has to go to a an appliance recycler that handles refrigerant or through a Waste Management special pickup.

When & how
Call the recycler or Waste Management first, confirm that the unit will be accepted and what it costs, then move it on the day that is agreed.
Get it ready
Empty and defrost the unit, tape the doors shut or remove them for safety, and leave the refrigerant circuit sealed. Confirm with the receiving business who recovers the refrigerant, because the county pages do not describe that step for a household unit.

Televisions, computers and other electronics

Accepted with preparation

County facilities refuse electronics and route them to E-Cycle Washington, which takes televisions, computers, laptops, monitors, tablets, e-readers and portable DVD players free at participating collection sites.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Washington residents using an E-Cycle Washington collection site, which accepts televisions, computers, laptops, monitors, tablets, e-readers and portable DVD players at no charge. Keyboards, mice, printers, toner cartridges and cell phones are outside that list but recycle free at Best Buy and Staples stores, and a badly damaged item may be refused at the site.
When & how

Keep televisions and computers out of both the garbage cart and the recycling cart, because the haulers and the county both refuse them, and keep batteries out of the carts as well. Special rules apply

Any customer bringing the load to the Southwest Recycling and Transfer Station. The inert material is accepted as garbage rather than as recycling, so the fee follows the vehicle weight, and the county lists private concrete recyclers as the alternative for a load that is clean enough to recycle.
When & how
Take the load to 21311 61st Place West during the posted hours and arrive at least 30 minutes before closing, or call one of the private concrete recyclers the county lists when you want the material recycled rather than landfilled. Waste Management also supplies a container for a remodel through its special arrangement line.
Get it ready
Keep the load free of yard and clean wood debris, which the county transfer stations refuse, and keep asbestos, liquids and anything with a fuel tank out of it. Separate and cover what you can before you arrive, because the fee follows the weighed vehicle.

When & how

Weekly garbage and every other week recycling

Waste Management collects garbage every week, and recycling with food and yard waste every other week, with carts at the curb by 7 a.m. Bag all garbage, keep recycling empty, clean and loose, and put food scraps and yard trimmings in the green cart. Extra garbage, extra recycling and extra yard waste that will not fit in the container with the lid closed all carry a charge.

What never goes in either cart

Hazardous waste, medical waste, syringes, fluorescent bulbs, fuel tanks, liquids, computers and televisions stay out of the garbage cart, and batteries, plastic bags, foam, diapers, shredded paper, aluminum foil and broken dishes stay out of the recycling cart. County facilities refuse electronics, cooling appliances and dangerous waste as well, so each of those items needs the route named on its own page.

Holiday collection

Waste Management observes three annual holidays, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. A weekday holiday delays collection by one day for the rest of that week, so a Thursday holiday moves Thursday customers to Friday and Friday customers to Saturday. Garbage is not collected on Independence Day, while recycling and yard debris run as scheduled, and the county transfer station closes on New Year's Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

What can I take to the Mountlake Terrace transfer station?

Household garbage, sofas, appliances without refrigerant, mattresses and covered springs, clean scrap metal that is 85 percent metal or more, up to five passenger car or pickup tires per customer per day, lead acid batteries, motor oil and antifreeze in limited quantities, propane tanks of barbecue size, glass bottles and jars, flattened cardboard and paper, lawn mowers with the fluids drained, and cooking oil. Dangerous waste, yard and clean wood debris, electronics and cooling appliances are refused, and the recycling area is for residential customers only.Official guidance

What does a bulky item drop-off cost in Mountlake Terrace?

The county station charges one garbage fee per vehicle rather than a price per item, so a couch, mattress or load of household junk costs the same light-load minimum as any other garbage trip, with a heavier vehicle charged by the ton on top of that. Appliances without refrigerant, lawn mowers with the fluids drained, clean scrap metal and the other listed recyclables cost nothing for residential customers. If you would rather have Waste Management collect the item from your address, that is a special arrangement with its own fee, so confirm the price on the phone first.Official guidance
