The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Edmonds does not haul its own waste. Three franchised private companies collect curbside garbage, recycling and optional yard and food waste, each in its own part of the city: Sound Disposal for the downtown bowl, Republic Services for almost everywhere else, and Waste Management NW for about 120 homes near Lake Ballinger. Households pick a service level from a 20-gallon mini-can up to company supplied 64 and 96 gallon carts, pay a monthly charge billed every three months, and ask their own hauler about anything the cart will not hold, because no citywide bulky program or price is published. The drop-off side belongs to Snohomish County. The Southwest station in Mountlake Terrace takes garbage at a flat minimum or by the ton, accepts mattresses, sofas, appliances, carpets and doors as garbage, takes up to five passenger tires a day at the same garbage rates, and refuses electronics, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers and heat pumps outright. Electronics go free through the statewide E-Cycle collectors, and household chemicals go free to the county hazardous waste station in Everett.

Weekly curbside garbage and recycling

Accepted with preparation

Every single family address gets weekly garbage collection from one of the three franchised haulers, using either its own cans or the company's carts, and the hauler supplies the recycling container. Service levels run from a 20 gallon mini-can up to 96 gallon carts, with a once-a-month option at the smallest size.

City cost & eligibility
Edmonds publishes no rate of its own, because three private companies hold the franchises and each bills its own customers: the city page states only that there is a monthly charge for basic service and that residents are billed every three months. Confirm the current charge with the hauler for your address, Sound Disposal on 425-778-2404, Republic Services on 425-778-0188 or Waste Management NW on 800-592-9995.
When & how
Collection is weekly for single family homes on the hauler's route day for that address, and the once-a-month option uses a single 32 gallon container.
Get it ready
Use the service level the household pays for, keep garbage in the can or company cart and recycling loose in the container the hauler supplies, and call the hauler for anything the cart will not hold, because the city publishes no bulky program of its own.

Large items that will not fit the cart

Special rules apply

Edmonds publishes no citywide bulky item program or price, so a couch, a mattress or another large item is arranged with the household's franchised hauler or driven to a Snohomish County transfer station, where sofas, appliances, mattresses, doors, carpets and rugs are accepted as garbage.

City cost & eligibility
No bulky pickup price is published for Edmonds and no city bulky program exists, while the county transfer stations bill such a load as garbage at a flat minimum under 360 pounds or $160 per ton plus tax above that, so either ask the hauler for a quote or expect the county garbage rate.
When & how
Call the hauler that serves the address, or drive the load to the Southwest Recycling and Transfer Station at 21311 61st Place West in Mountlake Terrace, which is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. apart from four holidays.
Get it ready
Cover and secure the load, because an unsecured load carries an extra fee at the gate that is set by vehicle weight. Keep electronics, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, heat pumps, liquid waste and yard debris out of the load, and expect to unload it yourself.

Couches, chairs and household furniture

Accepted with preparation

Furniture leaves either on a hauler pickup arranged directly or on a self haul trip to the county transfer station, where a sofa is accepted as garbage.

When & how
Take the piece to a county transfer station on any day from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or call the hauler for a pickup time.
Get it ready
Empty the drawers and remove anything you are not sending, cover the load, and keep electronics, cooling appliances and chemicals out of it because those are refused at county facilities.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

A mattress is one of the household items the county excepts from its size rule, so it is accepted as garbage at the transfer stations, and a hauler pickup can be arranged through the franchised company instead.

City cost & eligibility
From $30 for the flat minimum garbage fee per vehicle carrying 360 pounds or less at a Snohomish County recycling and transfer station, including tax, with heavier loads billed at $160 per ton plus tax. When & how
Take the bedding to a county transfer station during its seven day opening hours, from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or call the hauler that serves the address.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry, cover the load for the trip, and unload it yourself at the station because customers handle their own vehicles there.

Appliances other than cooling units

Accepted with preparation

Appliances are named among the household items the county accepts as garbage at its transfer stations, so a washer, dryer, stove or water heater can be driven in, and a hauler pickup is the other route.

City cost & eligibility
From $30 for the flat minimum garbage fee per vehicle carrying 360 pounds or less at a Snohomish County recycling and transfer station, including tax, with heavier loads billed at $160 per ton plus tax. Household loads taken to the Mountlake Terrace or Arlington station, where appliances are excepted from the size rule; a refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner, dehumidifier or heat pump is refused at every county facility and is covered by its own rule.
When & how
Take the appliance to a county transfer station from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on any day, or call the hauler that serves the address about picking it up.
Get it ready
Empty the appliance, tie or remove the doors so nothing can be trapped inside, keep it upright for the trip, and keep a cooling unit out of the load entirely because the stations refuse those.
County waste acceptance page with the prohibited items list covering air conditioners, dehumidifiers, heat pumps, refrigerators and freezers, electronics and liquid waste, the special preparation rule excepting sofas, appliances, mattresses, doors, carpets and rugs from the size limit, the construction material rule that accepts brick concrete dirt and rock as garbage only and the five tire per day limit at regular garbage ratesCounty facility locations page with the Southwest Recycling and Transfer Station at Mountlake Terrace and the North County station at Arlington, their seven day hours and holiday closures, the garbage fee of a flat minimum under 360 pounds or a tonnage rate above it, the accepted payment methods and the residential only recycling area

Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and heat pumps

Special rules apply

Cooling appliances are the one household category every Snohomish County facility refuses. Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers and heat pumps are all prohibited, and no Edmonds hauler publishes a price for collecting them, so the route has to be arranged.

City cost & eligibility
No county facility accepts a refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner, dehumidifier or heat pump, and no hauler price for collecting one is published for Edmonds, so call the county Solid Waste Division on 425-388-3425 for the current handling options, and ask the franchised hauler that serves the address for a collection quote.
When & how
Call 425-388-3425 or the hauler before the unit goes anywhere, and never set a cooling appliance out with the cart or take it to a transfer station.
Get it ready
Empty and defrost the unit, remove the doors so it cannot be entered, keep the refrigerant charge intact for whoever handles it, and keep the unit out of a load destined for a county facility.
County waste acceptance page with the prohibited items list covering air conditioners, dehumidifiers, heat pumps, refrigerators and freezers, electronics and liquid waste, the special preparation rule excepting sofas, appliances, mattresses, doors, carpets and rugs from the size limit, the construction material rule that accepts brick concrete dirt and rock as garbage only and the five tire per day limit at regular garbage ratesCity recycling and garbage page naming the three franchised haulers and their service areas and phone numbers, stating that the city provides no hauling itself, noting the state commission that regulates the franchises and linking the county transfer stations and hazardous waste station

Televisions, computers and electronics

Accepted with preparation

Electronics cannot go in the garbage anywhere in Snohomish County and the county transfer stations refuse them, but the statewide E-Cycle network takes computers, monitors, laptops, tablets, e-readers and televisions free, with several collectors in Edmonds and Lynnwood.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Free drop off and recycling for residents and businesses with 50 or fewer employees at the official E-Cycle collectors, which cover computers, monitors, laptops, tablets, e-readers and televisions working or not; other electronics such as printers and scanners can be recycled and may carry a fee.
When & how
Take the device to a free collector such as the Goodwill store at 10117 Edmonds Way or the Value Village outlet at 21558 Highway 99, or in Lynnwood to the Goodwill on 198th Street SW, St. Vincent DePaul on Highway 99, the Salvation Army trailer at 2902 164th Street SW or E-Waste, LLC on Beverly Park Road.
Get it ready
Wipe the personal information off computers, phones and smart televisions before anything leaves the house, keep cables and remotes with the device, and keep electronics out of the garbage and out of any county transfer station load, where they are prohibited.

Construction and remodeling debris

Accepted with preparation

Project debris goes to the county transfer stations, where brick, concrete, dirt, sod, sand, gravel and rocks are accepted as garbage only, and state law lets contractors self haul their own construction waste to those facilities.

City cost & eligibility
From $30 for the flat minimum garbage fee per vehicle carrying 360 pounds or less at a Snohomish County recycling and transfer station, including tax, with heavier loads billed at $160 per ton plus tax. Household and self hauled loads at the Mountlake Terrace and Arlington stations; at drop boxes the same materials are limited to one wheelbarrow, while larger quantities are accepted at the transfer stations, and construction material is taken as garbage rather than recycling.
When & how
Take the load to a county transfer station during its seven day opening hours from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or have the contractor self haul its own project waste to the same facilities.
Get it ready
Cover and secure the load to avoid the unsecured load fee, separate material that will be recycled from garbage, keep asbestos, liquid waste, electronics and yard debris out of the load because they are refused, and expect to unload the vehicle yourself.
County waste acceptance page with the prohibited items list covering air conditioners, dehumidifiers, heat pumps, refrigerators and freezers, electronics and liquid waste, the special preparation rule excepting sofas, appliances, mattresses, doors, carpets and rugs from the size limit, the construction material rule that accepts brick concrete dirt and rock as garbage only and the five tire per day limit at regular garbage ratesCounty construction and demolition debris page with the state hauling restriction and the note that contractors may self haul their own project waste to county facilities while recycling loads can go to a processorCounty fees page with the transfer station garbage fee, the drop box cubic yard charges and five cubic yard load limit, the statement that residential household hazardous waste carries no fee, the unsecured load penalty and the 2022 end of yard and clean wood debris acceptance at county facilities

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is not named by the city or the county, so a treadmill or a weight machine has to be arranged either with the hauler that serves the address or as a self hauled garbage load at a county station.

City cost & eligibility
Edmonds publishes no bulky program and neither the city nor the county names exercise equipment, so confirm the pickup and the price with the hauler for the address, or take the machine to a county transfer station where the load is billed as garbage at the flat minimum under 360 pounds or the per ton rate above it.
When & how
Ask the hauler first, then either arrange the pickup or take the machine to a county transfer station during its seven day opening hours.
Get it ready
Take the machine down as far as it comes apart so the pieces can be handled, keep the console out of the load if it is an electronic item and route that through an E-Cycle collector instead, and keep the machine out of the curbside carts.

Tires

Accepted with preparation

Tires are accepted at the county transfer stations at regular garbage rates, limited to five per customer per day and to passenger car and pickup truck sizes.

City cost & eligibility
From $30 for the flat minimum garbage fee per vehicle carrying 360 pounds or less at a Snohomish County recycling and transfer station, including tax, with heavier loads billed at $160 per ton plus tax and tires charged at the regular garbage rate. Five tires per customer per day, passenger car and pickup truck size only, with larger loads or other sizes directed to the county Solid Waste Division on 425-388-3425.
When & how
Take the tires to a county transfer station during its seven day opening hours, keeping to the five tire daily limit.
Get it ready
Keep tires out of the curbside carts, stay inside the five tire limit, and call 425-388-3425 before loading anything larger than a passenger car or pickup tire.

Paint, chemicals and household hazardous waste

Accepted with preparation

Household chemicals go free to the Snohomish County hazardous waste station in Everett, which has a long accepted list and its own refusal list, and which also takes latex paint for a fee.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Residential household hazardous waste carries no county fee; the county does not publish a rate for the program, while latex paint is accepted for a fee and the city page points residents to a published note about that charge.
When & how
Take the material to the Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Station at 3434 McDougall Avenue in Everett, open to households Wednesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed on the county's listed holidays.
Get it ready
Keep products in their original containers, never mix chemicals, keep propane tanks to barbecue size or smaller, and leave electronics, microwave ovens, refrigerators and freezers, medical waste and asbestos at home because the station refuses them. Dried out latex paint can go to a transfer station instead of a liquid load.

Yard waste and food scraps

Accepted with preparation

Yard waste is an optional curbside service the hauler supplies for an extra monthly fee, with food scraps allowed in the same cart, and the county no longer accepts yard or clean wood debris at any of its facilities.

City cost & eligibility
The yard waste cart is an optional service that the city says is available for an additional monthly fee, and the city publishes no rate because each franchised hauler bills its own customers, so confirm the current charge with the hauler for the address and note that the county stopped accepting yard and clean wood debris at all of its facilities in 2022.
When & how
Call the hauler that serves the address to request the yard waste container and schedule, then set the cart out on the collection day with the rest of the service.
Get it ready
Put grass clippings, leaves, weeds, brush, prunings and branches up to four inches in diameter and under four feet long in the cart, never in plastic bags, and keep dirt, rocks, sod, pet waste and litter, barbecue ashes and coals, metal, bricks, lumber and treated wood out. Food scraps and food soiled paper may go in the same cart, but no plastics, metals or pet waste.

Three franchised haulers (Sound Disposal, Republic Services, WM Northwest) with Snohomish County Solid Waste for the drop-off sites

Ask the hauler that serves your street

A household that wants its curbside service set up, changed, or extended to a large item that will not fit the cart.

Cost & conditions
Each franchised company bills its own customers and the city publishes no rate, so the monthly charge, the cost of a pickup for a large item and any change fee all come from the hauler, which is Sound Disposal on 425-778-2404, Republic Services on 425-778-0188 or Waste Management NW on 800-592-9995 depending on the address.
Arrange it
Call the hauler for the address to set up or change service, add the yard and food waste cart, or ask about collecting a large item.

There is no citywide bulky program, so a large item pickup depends on what the individual hauler will do and what it charges, and the state commission regulates the franchise terms rather than the city setting the price.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Edmonds households drive their loads to Snohomish County. The Southwest Recycling and Transfer Station at 21311 61st Place West in Mountlake Terrace is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and charges a flat minimum for vehicles carrying 360 pounds or less or a per ton rate above that, with drop box loads charged by the cubic yard up to five cubic yards. Household sofas, appliances, mattresses, doors, carpets and rugs are accepted as garbage, while the county's six foot and 25 square foot size rule, which those items are excepted from, is published for the North County station and the county drop boxes. Construction material such as brick, concrete, dirt, sod, sand, gravel and rocks is accepted as garbage only, and up to five passenger or pickup tires per day go in at the regular garbage rate. The same stations refuse electronics, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, heat pumps, liquid waste, medical waste, asbestos and yard or clean wood debris, so those streams split off separately. Electronics go free to the E-Cycle collectors in Edmonds and Lynnwood, household chemicals go free to the county station at 3434 McDougall Avenue in Everett on Wednesday through Saturday, and a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner has no county route at all and has to be arranged through the county solid waste line on 425-388-3425 or a hauler. Every load has to be covered and secured, because an unsecured load adds a fee at the gate. Your questions.
Straight answers.

Prices, timing and the details that matter at your address.

How much does pickup cost?

Choose your items to see the exact price. A standard sofa is $79 first and $29 additional. The highest first-item price applies once; every remaining item uses its additional-item price. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Review any applicable sales tax and the final total before payment.

Can I book a pickup for today?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup, where available. Choose from the dates shown at checkout. Your booking is for a pickup day, and we text you when your hauler is on the way.

Do my items need to be outside when I book?

You can book while your items are still inside. Arrange any indoor carrying and have everything outside and accessible according to your confirmation. We load and haul it away from there. Contact us before booking if your property has restricted access.

How do I get rid of a couch in Edmonds?

Call the hauler that serves your address about a pickup, because the city publishes no bulky program or price, or take the couch to the Snohomish County transfer station in Mountlake Terrace, where household sofas are accepted as garbage.Official guidance

Do large items have to be cut down for the county station?

Not the household items. At the county's North County station and its drop boxes, items normally have to be less than six feet long or smaller than 25 square feet, but household sofas, appliances, mattresses, doors, carpets and rugs are excepted from that rule.Official guidance

Where can I take a couch to dispose of it in Edmonds?

To the Snohomish County recycling and transfer station at 21311 61st Place West in Mountlake Terrace, open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., where a household sofa is accepted as garbage at the flat minimum fee or the per ton rate. A hauler pickup is the alternative, arranged with the company that serves your address.Official guidance

Where does a mattress go in Edmonds?

To a Snohomish County recycling and transfer station, where mattresses are accepted as garbage, or on a pickup arranged with the hauler that serves the address. The county publishes its six foot and 25 square foot size rule, with mattresses among the exceptions, for the North County station and the drop boxes. Truck loads are billed at the flat minimum or the per ton rate.Official guidance

Can a washer or dryer go to the Snohomish County transfer station?

Yes. Appliances are named among the household items excepted from the size limit and accepted as garbage, and the load is billed at the flat minimum under 360 pounds or the per ton rate above it. A refrigerator or freezer cannot go there and is handled separately.Official guidance

Can a refrigerator go to the transfer station in Snohomish County?

No. Refrigerators and freezers are on the prohibited list at every county facility, along with air conditioners, dehumidifiers and heat pumps, and the county directs those items to its Solid Waste Division on 425-388-3425. Edmonds publishes no hauler price for collecting one, so ask the hauler that serves your address for a quote.Official guidance

Where can I take a TV or computer in Edmonds?

To a free E-Cycle collector: in Edmonds the Goodwill store at 10117 Edmonds Way and the Value Village outlet at 21558 Highway 99, and in Lynnwood the Goodwill on 198th Street SW, St. Vincent DePaul on Highway 99, the Salvation Army donation trailer or E-Waste, LLC on Beverly Park Road. Computers, monitors, laptops, tablets, e-readers and televisions are all free, working or not.Official guidance

No. Computers, monitors of any kind, laptops, tablets, televisions of any kind, e-readers and separated circuit boards are not allowed in the garbage anywhere in Snohomish County, and the three county transfer stations do not accept any electronics for recycling.Official guidance

Who collects waste in Edmonds?

Three franchised private companies, each in its own part of the city: Sound Disposal on 425-778-2404 for the downtown bowl, Republic Services on 425-778-0188 for almost everywhere else, and Waste Management NW on 800-592-9995 for about 120 homes near Lake Ballinger. The city itself does not haul waste, and it regulates the franchises through the state Utilities and Transportation Commission.Official guidance

How is curbside service billed in Edmonds?

Each hauler bills its own customers directly. The city page states that there is a monthly charge for basic service and that residents are billed every three months, but it publishes no rate because the three companies hold their own franchises under state regulation.Official guidance

What does a trip to the county transfer station cost?

A flat minimum fee for a vehicle carrying 360 pounds or less, including tax, or a per ton rate above that, paid by credit or debit card, cash or check. Drop box loads are charged per cubic yard with a five cubic yard limit per customer per load, and an uncovered load adds a fee.Official guidance

Because every Snohomish County facility lists refrigerators and freezers as prohibited, along with air conditioners, dehumidifiers and heat pumps, and directs those items to the county Solid Waste Division on 425-388-3425. Edmonds publishes no hauler price for collecting one, so the route has to be arranged.Official guidance

Is electronics recycling really free in Edmonds?
