The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Kirkland routes oversized items through its contracted hauler rather than a city crew. Waste Management books a curbside pickup for furniture, mattresses and appliances, and each single-family home has one bulky item collection a year at no additional cost. Electronics are a separate curbside service that is free, while the heavier work goes elsewhere: renovation loads, mattresses that should be recycled rather than landfilled, and refrigerant appliances all belong at a King County transfer station.

Bulky item collection with the hauler

Accepted with preparation

Kirkland does not send a city crew for oversized items. Waste Management collects bulky material from the curb for single-family homes, and every home has one bulky item collection a year at no additional cost, with further items charged one at a time.

City cost & eligibility
From $37.3 each charged bulky item, with the first bulky item in the year free and the amount depending on the item. Single-family Kirkland households, booked through Waste Management on 425-587-0040 or pnwrsservices@wm.com. The fee is per occurrence per item, is subject to tax and appears on the bi-monthly city utility bill.
When & how
Book with Waste Management before the collection day, then set the item out for the arranged day. Carts and bulky set outs go out by 7 a.m., and the hauler's phone line is open Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Get it ready
Bag household garbage separately in the green cart, keep the bulky load reachable at the curb, and book the pickup rather than leaving the item out. Furniture on this route is landfilled rather than recycled, so anything still usable is better donated, and the city treats furniture left on the roadside as illegal dumping.

When & how
Book with the hauler before the collection day and set the piece at the curb for the arranged day, out by 7 a.m.
Get it ready
Keep furniture out of the green garbage cart, which takes bagged household garbage only, and out of the recycling carts. Do not leave it on the roadside or in a public place, because the city treats that as illegal dumping. Metal pieces such as filing cabinets and metal chairs can instead go to the free scrap metal area at a county transfer station.

Mattresses and box springs

Accepted with preparation

A mattress or box spring can go out on a bulky item pickup, with the first bulky item in the year free for a Kirkland household. If it should be recycled instead of landfilled, mattress recycling runs at two King County stations and at the city's semi-annual recycling events.

City cost & eligibility
From $37.3 each charged mattress or box spring on the curbside bulky route, with the first bulky item in the year free; a mattress recycled at a county station is charged per item. Single-family Kirkland households for the curbside pickup through Waste Management on 425-587-0040. The county mattress fee is charged at the scale house to customers who live or do business in King County outside Seattle and Milton.
When & how
Book the curbside pickup before the collection day, or bring the mattress to a county transfer station during open hours. The Factoria station takes mattresses Monday to Friday 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry and off the curb until the pickup is booked. The Houghton station inside Kirkland handles a mattress as garbage for a per item fee, while the Factoria station in Bellevue and the Shoreline station recycle it for a per item fee, so choose the station by what you want to happen to it.

Large appliances and white goods

Special rules apply

Working appliances have a donation route, non-refrigerant appliances recycle at no cost at county stations where scrap metal is collected, and refrigerant appliances are recycled for a per unit fee. The hauler will also take an appliance on a charged bulky item pickup.

City cost & eligibility
From $37.3 each charged appliance on the curbside bulky route, with the first bulky item in the year free and refrigerant appliances charged at the higher published rate; a refrigerant appliance recycled at a county station is charged per unit. Single-family Kirkland households for the curbside pickup through Waste Management. County appliance recycling is open to customers who live or do business in King County outside Seattle and Milton and is paid at the scale house.
When & how
Book the curbside pickup with Waste Management, or haul the unit to a county transfer station during open hours. Refrigerant appliances are recycled at the Factoria station in Bellevue and the Shoreline station.
Get it ready
Empty the unit, keep it out of both carts and secure the doors. Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers and heat pumps count as refrigerant appliances and are charged per unit at county facilities, and King County does not accept major appliances for disposal except a dishwasher that is at least half plastic.

Electronics, televisions and monitors

Special rules apply

Single-family residents may put electronics next to the blue recycling cart at no extra charge, booked with the hauler. King County transfer stations refuse televisions, computers and monitors outright, so those items use the curbside service or a free E-Cycle Washington drop off.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Included for single-family Kirkland residents when the pickup is scheduled with Waste Management at least one business day before collection day. Free E-Cycle Washington drop offs take televisions, computers, laptops, monitors, e-readers, tablets and portable DVD players.
When & how
Schedule the curbside pickup with Waste Management on 425-587-0040 or pnwrsservices@wm.com, then place the items two feet from the blue recycling cart on collection day. The E-Cycle drop off sites keep their own posted hours.
Get it ready
Keep every item to two feet by two feet by two feet or less and 60 pounds or less, and bag small devices such as phones in a clear plastic bag. The curbside service takes a television up to a 21 inch screen, so a larger screen goes to an E-Cycle Washington drop off such as Pacific Power Batteries of Kirkland or Goodwill Juanita.

Construction and remodeling debris

Special rules apply

Kirkland publishes no curbside collection for construction and remodeling material. These loads go to a King County transfer station, which takes construction and demolition debris with handling limits.

City cost & eligibility
No city rate is published for construction material. King County charges a garbage load by weight with a minimum fee for the first 320 pounds, so confirm the load and the current rate at the scale house before hauling it.
When & how
Take the load to a King County transfer station during open hours, such as the Houghton station on NE 60th Street in Kirkland or the Factoria station in Bellevue.
Get it ready
Separate untreated wood, yard waste and recyclables from the garbage, keep asbestos and hazardous material out, and expect a load arriving in a hydraulic dump bed or a dump trailer to be refused unless construction material is a small share of it. Treated wood is accepted from residents only in pieces of eight feet or less, carpet and carpet padding count as construction material, and rigid pieces over eight feet need prior clearance.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Kirkland does not name exercise machines, so a treadmill or exercise bike goes out as a bulky item booked with the hauler, or into the free scrap metal area when the machine is mostly metal.

City cost & eligibility
From $37.3 each charged bulky item when the machine goes out at the curb, with the first bulky item in the year free; a machine recycled as scrap metal at a county station carries no charge. Single-family Kirkland households for the curbside route. The county scrap metal area is open to customers who live or do business in King County outside Seattle and Milton.
When & how
Book the curbside pickup with Waste Management, or take the machine to the scrap metal area at the Houghton, Factoria or Shoreline station during open hours.
Get it ready
Break the machine down as far as it will go and strip anything that is not metal before a scrap metal drop off, because that area asks for loads that are at least half metal. A machine that is not mostly metal and does not fit the cart should be described to the hauler when the pickup is booked.

Bagged household garbage and extras

Special rules apply

Household garbage is bagged inside the green cart, and anything that will not fit with the lid closed goes out beside the cart as a charged extra. Extra recycling is free; extra garbage and yard waste are not.

City cost & eligibility
$9.67 each extra garbage unit of up to 32 gallons set beside the cart, subject to tax. Kirkland garbage customers. The extra must be a 32-gallon personal container with handles or a plastic bag labelled garbage, and it may not exceed 35 pounds.
When & how
Collection day, with the cart and any extra out by 7 a.m. Carts may be put out no earlier than 24 hours before service and must be removed within 24 hours after it.
Get it ready
Close the cart lid on the bagged garbage, because an overflowing cart may be charged as an extra. Label the extra container or bag garbage and keep it under 35 pounds, and put extra household recycling in a paper bag, cardboard box or reusable container labelled recycling instead, which is free.

Prepare a self haul load for a county station

Sort recyclables, yard waste, clean wood and garbage before arriving, because the Houghton station does not take corrugated cardboard in the garbage and refuses televisions, computers and major appliances for disposal. Single-family homes only, every item under two feet by two feet by two feet and 60 pounds, and a television no larger than a 21 inch screen. Large screens, and households in a shared building, need a drop off route instead.

Taking it somewhere yourself?

Self haul in Kirkland means a King County transfer station. The Houghton station on NE 60th Street sits inside the city in the Bridle Trails area, and the Factoria station in Bellevue and the Shoreline station are the nearer options for recycling rather than disposal. Customers must live or do business in King County outside Seattle and Milton, loads are paid at the scale house by card, cash or Apple Pay, and the charge is by weight with a minimum for the first 320 pounds. The choice of station matters: a mattress is recycled at Factoria and Shoreline but handled as garbage at Houghton, and refrigerant appliances are recycled at Factoria and Shoreline for a per unit fee. Televisions, computers, monitors, major appliances, batteries, pesticides, propane tanks, sharps and motor oil are refused, so the free E-Cycle Washington drop off at Pacific Power Batteries of Kirkland or Goodwill Juanita is the route for a screen. Renovation material has to arrive without asbestos or hazardous waste and without a hydraulic dump bed unless construction material is a small share of the load. Before you book

Your questions.
Straight answers.

Prices, timing and the details that matter at your address.

How much does pickup cost?

Choose your items to see the exact price. A standard sofa is $79 first and $29 additional. The highest first-item price applies once; every remaining item uses its additional-item price. Loading, transportation and disposal are included. Review any applicable sales tax and the final total before payment.

Can I book a pickup for today?

Book by 2pm at your pickup address for same-day pickup, where available. Choose from the dates shown at checkout. Your booking is for a pickup day, and we text you when your hauler is on the way.

Do my items need to be outside when I book?

You can book while your items are still inside. Arrange any indoor carrying and have everything outside and accessible according to your confirmation. We load and haul it away from there. Contact us before booking if your property has restricted access.

How many bulky items can a Kirkland household set out?

One bulky item collection is included each year at no additional cost, and further items are charged per item when Waste Management books the pickup. Furniture, mattresses and appliances all use that route, and because the bulky load is landfilled, the city asks residents to donate or give away anything that still works.Official guidance

Can a Kirkland mattress be recycled instead of thrown away?

Yes. Mattress recycling is offered at the Factoria station in Bellevue and the Shoreline station, while the Houghton station inside Kirkland handles a mattress as garbage. The city also runs semi-annual recycling collection events that take mattresses and box springs for a small pass-through charge.Official guidance

Where can a refrigerator go in Kirkland?

Refrigerant appliances such as refrigerators and air conditioners are recycled at the Factoria station in Bellevue and the Shoreline station for a per unit fee, and the same units ride a charged bulky item pickup at the curb. An appliance that still works and is less than ten years old is better donated to a reuse centre.Official guidance

Can a large television go out with Kirkland recycling?

The curbside electronics service takes a television up to a 21 inch screen. A larger screen goes to a free E-Cycle Washington drop off such as Pacific Power Batteries of Kirkland or Goodwill Juanita, which caps donations at ten televisions, monitors, computers and laptops per donor per day. King County transfer stations do not accept televisions at all.Official guidance

How does bulky item collection work in Kirkland?

Oversized items are booked with Waste Management rather than a city crew: call 425-587-0040 or email pnwrsservices@wm.com. Each single-family home has one bulky item collection a year at no additional cost and every further item is charged per item. Furniture and mattresses go to the landfill on that route, while a mattress can be recycled and a refrigerant appliance can be recycled for a fee at a King County transfer station instead.Official guidance

When should a Kirkland resident use a county transfer station?

The Houghton station on NE 60th Street is inside Kirkland, and Factoria in Bellevue and Shoreline are the nearer stations for recycling. Customers must live or do business in King County outside Seattle and Milton, loads are charged by weight with a minimum for the first 320 pounds, and televisions, computers, major appliances, batteries and some dense items are refused or need prior clearance, so confirm a mixed load before hauling it.Official guidance
