You want to know it is handled.
When the next collection does not fit your plans, choose a Dropcurb pickup day. Updates keep you informed, and completion photos show when the booked items are gone.
A few simple choices turn a mixed pile into a clear booking. No need to estimate how much of a truck it might fill.
Filled bags and boxes
Count each trash bag or filled household box. Books and media go by the box. Clothes, bedding and shoes go by the filled bag. Toys packed together have a Box of toys choice. Ask us about unusually heavy or oversized bags and boxes first.
Empty cardboard and containers
Empty cardboard is a different choice: choose single empty boxes or tied bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Compacted bales have their own weight-based choices and require loading-dock access. A Storage bin choice covers the empty bin itself; ask us to confirm the contents if they are going too.
Furniture and other larger items
Add the actual larger item alongside your bags and boxes, such as a sofa, chair or mattress. It has its own price and preparation. Keep construction materials and items needing special handling out of ordinary household bags.

Burien residential customers may put out up to one cubic yard of extra garbage and request a free collection of up to three bulky items once each calendar year, and anything beyond that is collected on call for a published per item rate.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. Once each calendar year a Burien residential customer may place up to one cubic yard of garbage at the curb with no single item, bag or box larger than three feet by three feet, and may request a free collection of up to three bulky items such as appliances, couches or large chairs, scheduled in advance with Recology at 206.767.3322. An on call collection beyond the annual allowance is charged per item at the published residential rate.
When & how
Call Recology at 206.767.3322 or submit the bulky item request form, describe the items, and wait until the collection is scheduled before setting anything out at the curb.
Get it ready
Keep every item at the curb rather than beside the carts, keep each piece within the size limit for the annual allowance, remove the doors from a refrigerator or freezer, and count each collection against the once a year allowance.
Sofas, chairs and other furniture are collected at the curb on a scheduled bulky item collection, and a Burien household may use the free annual allowance for up to three pieces.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. A couch, sofa or large chair counts as one of the bulky items a Burien residential customer may have collected free once each calendar year, scheduled with Recology at 206.767.3322. Once that allowance is used, an on call collection is charged per piece at the published residential rate, where sofas, chairs, mattresses and box springs share one rate.
When & how
Call Recology at 206.767.3322 or submit the bulky item request form, then place the piece at the curb on the scheduled collection day.
Get it ready
Keep the piece at the curb and out of the carts, keep it whole so the crew can lift it, keep construction material and other non bulky items off the collection, and remember that the pieces in one collection count together against the annual allowance.
A mattress or box spring can ride the free annual bulky collection in Burien, or be recycled at the King County Bow Lake station for a flat handling fee per piece.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. A mattress or box spring counts as one bulky item in the free collection a Burien residential customer may request once each calendar year through Recology at 206.767.3322. A household that hauls the set itself pays the flat handling fee per piece at the King County Bow Lake station rather than the garbage rate, up to six pieces per customer per day.
When & how
Schedule the curbside collection with Recology at 206.767.3322, or take the set to the King County Bow Lake station in Tukwila during recycling area hours.
Get it ready
Keep the mattress dry, because wet mattresses, futons and box springs are refused at the recycling drop off while stained or torn ones are accepted, and keep the set upright and away from the shared carts until the collection day.
Appliances are collected as bulky items, small appliances under the size limit ride the free on call special item route, and a refrigerator or freezer has to go out with its doors removed.
City cost & eligibility
No charge. A household appliance counts as one of the bulky items a Burien residential customer may have collected free once each calendar year through Recology at 206.767.3322, and a small appliance under two feet in any direction and under thirty five pounds can go out on a free on call special item recycling collection. A refrigerator or freezer is charged at the higher published rate on an on call collection beyond the annual allowance, and the refrigerant appliances recycled at the King County Bow Lake station carry their own per unit charge.
When & how
Call Recology at 206.767.3322 to schedule the special item or bulky collection, or take a refrigerant appliance to the King County Bow Lake station during recycling area hours.
Get it ready
Empty the appliance, keep it out of the garbage and recycling carts, remove the doors from a refrigerator or freezer, keep refrigerant appliances upright when unloading at the transfer station, and keep large commercial appliances out of the residential drop off because they belong with an appliance or metals recycler.
Exercise equipment is not named in the published bulky item examples, so the route and the charge are confirmed before the machine is set out.
City cost & eligibility
No published Burien or King County page read here names exercise equipment, so call Recology at 206.767.3322 and ask whether the machine counts as one of the free annual bulky items or is charged as an on call collection, and call the King County solid waste information line at 206-477-4466 if the plan is to haul it to the Bow Lake station.
When & how
Call before the machine moves, then schedule the bulky collection or plan the transfer station trip on the answer you get.
Get it ready
Take the machine apart where it comes apart, keep any console or battery separate so it follows the electronics or battery route, keep the machine off the curb and out of the shared carts until the collection is confirmed, and keep loose weights out of the recycling cart.
Burien residential customers may place up to one cubic yard of garbage at the curb once each calendar year with no single item, bag or box larger than three feet by three feet, and may also ask for a free collection of up to three bulky items such as appliances, couches or large chairs. Everything has to be scheduled with Recology at 206.767.3322 before it goes out, and the pieces in one set count together against the once a year allowance.
Bulky items go at the curb rather than beside the shared carts, refrigerator and freezer doors have to be removed, and the collection has to be scheduled before anything is set out. An on call collection beyond the free annual allowance is charged per item at the published residential rate, and the pieces in one collection count together against the annual allowance.
Recology takes small appliances smaller than two feet by two feet by two feet and under thirty five pounds, and small electronics two feet by two feet by two feet or smaller and under sixty pounds, styrofoam blocks up to thirty two gallons per drop off, and clean dry textiles on request. Batteries have to be taped at the ends, bagged with rechargeable and non rechargeable kinds separated, and set on top of the closed recycling cart on collection day, and vehicle and marine batteries are not accepted. Used motor oil and cooking oil are limited to three gallons per collection for each type, in sealed clear jugs labeled with the name and address, and fluorescent tubes and bulbs are limited to two per collection and ten per year.
Apartment and condominium customers get the same small electronics and small appliance service, but the request has to be made by phone or through the form by the bill payer on record, and Recology asks that items not be set next to the shared carts or containers.
Recology operates on all holidays except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day, and a collection day that falls on or after one of those holidays runs one day later that week. A missed collection has to be reported within twenty four hours, and a return trip for a residential customer who asks for a second visit carries a published charge.
Use a permitted, accessible outdoor spot. Arrange the move out of your home, keep shared access clear and follow your confirmation’s readiness instructions. Check with your building about access or staging limits before booking.

Cost & conditions

Arrange it
Ask the property manager or the account holder to request the collection from Recology, then follow the placement instructions the hauler gives for that property.

Can you pick up bags of junk today?+
Book by 2pm in the pickup address’s local time for same-day pickup. Available dates appear at checkout. Have the booked bags and boxes outside and accessible according to your confirmation. You receive pickup updates and completion photos; the booking is for a day rather than an exact arrival time.
Do I count every object inside a bag or box?+
No. Count the filled bags or boxes using the matching choice. Books and media go in Filled household box; clothes, bedding and shoes go in Bag of clothes & bedding; packed toys have a Box of toys choice. Empty cardboard is separate, with individual empty boxes and bundles of 10 flattened boxes. Heavy, oversized or unusual contents need a photo review before booking.
Can you pick up a small loose pile of household junk?+
Yes. Estimate how many trash bags the small household pile would fill, and bag or box as much as possible. Select furniture and other larger items separately. There is no extra charge just because the pile is loose. Send a photo first if the count or contents are unclear. A household Dumpster Bag choice does not accept construction debris.
Can I book bags, boxes and furniture together?+
Yes. Select the bags and boxes, then add each larger item using its own catalog choice. The booking shows one combined price for the selected items. Move everything to an accessible outdoor spot before pickup; indoor carrying and sorting are not included. Keep anything you want to retain apart from the booked items and identify what goes in your photos and notes.

Once each calendar year a Burien residential customer may place up to one cubic yard of garbage at the curb and request a free collection of up to three bulky items, all scheduled in advance with Recology at 206.767.3322. Beyond that allowance each on call collection is charged per item at the published residential rate, where sofas, chairs, mattresses and box springs share one rate, a non refrigerant appliance costs less, and a refrigerator or freezer costs more. A household that hauls the piece itself pays the King County garbage minimum or the per item handling fees instead.Official guidance
What cannot go in a Burien garbage cart?+
Electronics cannot go in the garbage and instead ride the free curbside small electronics collection or a Recology Store or E-Cycle Washington drop off. Household hazardous waste is banned from the garbage, the recycling cart and the organics cart and goes to a King County collection site, and construction and demolition material is not a curbside or bulky item at all, so project loads go to the Bow Lake station or into a debris box. Bulky items such as appliances, furniture and mattresses also never go in the carts.Official guidance
