The local disposal guide
Burien does not run its own collection crews. The city holds a ten year garbage, recyclables and compostables contract with Recology, and residential garbage service includes recycling every other week and food and yard waste every week on the same collection day. Large items do not go in the carts: a Burien residential customer may place up to one cubic yard of extra garbage at the curb once each calendar year with every item, bag or box no larger than three feet by three feet, and may also request a free collection of up to three bulky items such as appliances, couches or large chairs. Anything beyond that allowance is collected on call for a published per item rate, scheduled with Recology at 206.767.3322. Small electronics, small appliances, batteries, motor oil, cooking oil, textiles, styrofoam blocks and fluorescent bulbs ride free on call special item collections, while household hazardous waste is banned from the carts and goes to a King County collection site, and a self haul can go to the King County Bow Lake station in Tukwila for the garbage minimum, a per item mattress handling fee or a per unit refrigerant appliance fee.
