The local disposal guide

Will the city
take it?

Kent contracts its curbside collection to Republic Services, which takes garbage every week and alternates recycling with yard and food waste every other week and handles customer service and billing directly, while King County runs the disposal side and part of the rate. Garbage service is mandatory for occupied buildings under Kent City Code 7.03, and signing up brings a blue recycling cart and a green food and yard cart at no additional charge, with the bill following the size of the garbage cart. The big item routes are a free Spring and Fall Curbside Clean-Up, which takes ten units of extra garbage and ten units of yard waste on the regular yard waste day, and a year round on-call bulky item collection that Republic Services runs for a fee and that covers mattresses, furniture and appliances the clean-up refuses. Kent also runs free Saturday recycling collection events, Friday mini recycling events for electronics and shredding, and paint only events under the Washington State Paint Stewardship Program, and its closest disposal site is the Bow Lake Recycling and Transfer Station in Tukwila, which the county says draws largely from Kent.

Weekly garbage and every other week recycling and yard plus food waste

Accepted with preparation

Republic Services collects garbage every week and alternates recycling with yard and food waste collection every other week for Kent households. Garbage service is mandatory for all occupied buildings under Kent City Code 7.03, and signing up brings a blue recycling cart and a green food and yard waste cart in a choice of sizes at no additional charge, with the rate set by the size of the garbage cart.

City cost & eligibility
King County and Republic Services adjust the garbage rates together every January 1 and the city publishes no rate of its own, so confirm the amount for your cart size on the Republic Services Kent rate page or with residential customer service at 206-682-9735.
When & how
Put the carts out on the collection day. Republic Services observes New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, and a collection day that falls on one of those holidays is delayed by one day. Residential customer service answers on 206-682-9735 Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon, with office hours Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Get it ready
Keep recyclables empty, clean and dry and loose in the blue cart, flatten boxes, scrape out food residue, recycle plastic by shape as bottles, tubs, jugs and cups, and put loose lids, caps and plastic bags in the garbage. Keep food scraps and food soiled paper in the green cart, close the lids so the recycling stays dry, and use the customer care center at 22010 76th Ave S in Kent for account questions.

Free Spring and Fall Curbside Clean-Up

Accepted with preparation

Kent runs a free Spring and Fall Curbside Clean-Up for residential households inside city limits, with extra garbage and extra yard waste placed at the curb on the regular yard waste collection day. Each stream is limited to ten units, and tires, scrap metal, hazardous waste, appliances and furniture are not accepted.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. No charge to a residential household inside Kent city limits that already has the required garbage service, with extra garbage limited to ten units and yard waste limited to ten units and every container under sixty pounds.
When & how
Put everything at the curb by 7 a.m. on your regular yard waste collection day during the spring week of April 6 to 10, 2026 or the fall week of November 2 to 6, 2026. If the regular garbage truck does not take the material, another truck will come for it, and a household whose refuse is missed calls Republic Services at 206-682-9735.
Get it ready
Bag extra garbage, box it within three feet five inches on each side or use a can of thirty-two gallons or smaller, and keep each container under sixty pounds, because loose trash is not collected. Keep yard waste separate from garbage in bundles, cans, boxes, paper bags or compostable bags with no plastic bags, under sixty pounds and no more than four feet long, tie branches with natural fiber rope or twine, and put food waste only in the contractor cart.

Curbside recycling and extra recycling

Accepted with preparation

Recycling runs every other week in the blue cart, alternating with yard and food waste collection, and the cost of the blue and green carts is included in the garbage rate. Extra recyclables can be set out at no additional cost in paper bags, cardboard boxes or thirty-two gallon lidded cans when they are labelled RECYCLE and weigh no more than sixty pounds.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. Setting out extra recyclables in paper bags, cardboard boxes or a thirty-two gallon lidded can labelled RECYCLE carries no additional cost, and a household can request a larger recycling cart from the hauler. A second recycling cart is billed at $4.27 a month.
When & how
Recycling and yard and food waste alternate every other week, and the letter on the hauler's calendar says which week is which, with R1 meaning the first week of the year is recycling and Y2 meaning the second week is yard waste.
Get it ready
Keep recyclables empty, clean and dry and loose in the cart, flatten boxes and set large pieces beside it, scrape out food residue, and take plastic bags to a grocery store instead of putting them in the cart, while loose lids and caps go in the garbage. Recycle plastic by shape as bottles, tubs, jugs and cups, and keep the lid closed so rain does not ruin the paper.

Free Saturday, Friday mini and paint recycling collection events

Accepted with preparation

Kent hosts free recycling collection events that take material the curb will not: Saturday events in spring, summer and fall that cover appliances, mattresses and bulky material, Friday mini events focused on electronics, shredding and scrap metal, and paint only events under the Washington State Paint Stewardship Program.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. No charge for a resident to drop off the material each event accepts, with paint accepted under the Washington State Paint Stewardship Program in original containers of five gallons or less.
When & how
The Saturday events run on March 7 at Hogan Park, June 13 at Canyon Ridge Middle School and October 10, 2026 at Hogan Park, the Friday mini events run from 9 a.m. to noon on April 10, May 8, July 10, August 14 and September 18, 2026, and the paint only events run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hogan Park on March 14 and October 17, 2026. Confirm the Saturday event hours with the city before traveling.
Get it ready
Split the load by material. Appliances, CFC appliances, batteries, bulky yard debris, mattresses and box springs without futons, porcelain toilets, tubs and sinks, propane tanks, scrap metal and styrofoam go to a Saturday event, with concrete, brick and rock only at the summer event and passenger tires without rims, limited to ten per vehicle, in the spring and fall only. Televisions, monitors and the rest of the electronics list go to a Friday mini event, and shredding is limited to four legal sized boxes or five paper bags.

On-call bulky item collection for a fee

Accepted with preparation

Republic Services collects mattresses, furniture and other bulky items from the curb for a fee when the pickup is scheduled in advance with the hauler, and the 2026 residential rate sheet prices the on-call items by type, with white goods other than refrigerators, sofas and chairs and mattresses in one price group and refrigerators, freezers and console televisions in a higher one.

City cost & eligibility
From $79.89 per item for the on-call bulky item collection, with white goods other than refrigerators, sofas and chairs and mattresses at $79.89 each and refrigerators, freezers and console televisions at $119.80 each on the Republic Services residential rate sheet effective January 1, 2026. A household that schedules the pickup with Republic Services at 206-682-9735 and pays the published item charge, because the free curbside clean-up refuses appliances and furniture.
When & how
Call Republic Services at 206-682-9735 to learn more about the bulky item service and schedule a pickup, then put the items out on the day the hauler gives you.
Get it ready
Keep the load to the items the hauler names for the service. Appliances and furniture are refused at the free curbside clean-up, so the on-call pickup is the curbside route for them, and ask the hauler about anything that is not on the sheet before the truck comes.

Furniture, couches and sofas

Accepted with preparation

Furniture and sofas are refused at the free Spring and Fall Curbside Clean-Up, so they go on the on-call bulky item collection that Republic Services runs for a fee, which the 2026 residential rate sheet prices for sofas and chairs by the item.

City cost & eligibility
From $79.89 per item, with sofas and chairs listed at $79.89 each on the Republic Services residential rate sheet effective January 1, 2026. When & how
Call Republic Services at 206-682-9735 to arrange the pickup and put the piece at the curb on the day the hauler gives you.
Get it ready
Do not set a couch out during the clean-up week expecting collection, because the clean-up refuses furniture. Ask the hauler about a sleeper sofa, a sectional or a piece with a mechanism before the pickup is scheduled, and keep the piece whole and reachable at the curb.

Accepted with preparation

A mattress and box spring go either on a Republic Services on-call bulky item pickup for a fee or to a free city recycling collection event, where the Saturday events accept mattresses and box springs but not futons. The free curbside clean-up refuses furniture, so it is not the route for a mattress.

City cost & eligibility
From $79.89 per item on the on-call bulky item collection, with mattresses listed at $79.89 each on the Republic Services residential rate sheet effective January 1, 2026. A household that schedules the on-call pickup with Republic Services at 206-682-9735 and pays the published item charge, or a household that brings the set to a free Saturday recycling collection event, where a mattress and box spring are accepted without futons.
When & how
Call Republic Services at 206-682-9735 for the on-call pickup, or bring the set to a Saturday recycling collection event on March 7, June 13 or October 10, 2026 and confirm the event hours with the city before traveling.
Get it ready
Keep the set out of the clean-up week, where furniture is refused, and keep a futon out of the Saturday recycling event, where only mattresses and box springs are accepted. Ask the hauler about a mattress that is still wet or damaged before it goes on the on-call pickup.

Appliances and white goods

Accepted with preparation

A small appliance two feet by two feet by two feet or smaller and under thirty-five pounds goes on top of the recycling cart at no charge, a larger appliance goes on the Republic Services on-call bulky item pickup for a fee, and a Saturday recycling collection event takes appliances and CFC appliances free.

City cost & eligibility
From $79.89 per item on the on-call bulky item collection, with white goods other than refrigerators at $79.89 each and refrigerators, freezers and console televisions at $119.80 each on the Republic Services residential rate sheet effective January 1, 2026. When & how
Put a qualifying small appliance on top of the recycling cart on the collection day, call Republic Services at 206-682-9735 for the on-call pickup, or bring appliances and CFC appliances to a Saturday recycling collection event.
Get it ready
Keep a refrigerator or freezer out of the garbage cart and off the clean-up week, and tell the hauler whether the unit still holds refrigerant, because the county charges a refrigerant appliance by the unit at its recycling stations. A CFC appliance such as an air conditioner, refrigerator or freezer is not accepted in the scrap metal collection at a Friday mini event.

City cost & eligibility
No charge. No charge for a resident to bring televisions, computers, laptops, monitors, tablets, e-readers, cell phones, disc players, fax machines, holiday lights, keyboards, mice, microwaves, remote controls, scanners, VCRs and wires to a Friday mini recycling event, and the city points residents at ecyclewa.org for a drop-off location between events.
When & how
The Friday mini events run from 9 a.m. to noon on April 10, May 8, July 10, August 14 and September 18, 2026.
Get it ready
Bring televisions of every type, including plastic sets, wood console sets and big screens, along with computers, monitors and the rest of the list, and keep televisions and monitors out of the Saturday events and out of the garbage because King County does not accept them for disposal. Construction, remodeling and demolition material

Special rules apply

Construction, remodeling and demolition material is refused at the free curbside clean-up and does not go in the garbage, so it is self hauled to a King County transfer station that accepts it, with Bow Lake in Tukwila the closest station to Kent.

City cost & eligibility
From $40.25 for the King County garbage minimum for the first three hundred twenty pounds, with a per-ton rate above that, a charitable organization rate below the standard one, a higher special waste rate for material that needs extra handling and a twenty-five dollar unsecured load fee under the county code. A customer who lives or does business in King County's service area, paying by credit card, cash or Apple Pay at the scale house, or a household with a ProviderOne, EBT or ORCA LIFT card that takes the Cleanup LIFT discount of twenty dollars off each type of waste on each visit.
When & how
Bow Lake Recycling and Transfer Station at 18800 Orillia Road S in Tukwila is open around the clock Monday through Thursday, from midnight to 11:30 p.m. on Friday and from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, with its recycling area open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays, and it closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.
Get it ready
Keep asbestos containing waste, hazardous waste, burning or smoldering material, dusty or odorous material and bulky or over length material out of the load, and separate the material at the station, where cardboard, clean wood, scrap metal and yard waste must be sorted for recycling. A load that arrives in a vehicle with a hydraulic or mechanized dump bed or in a dump trailer is refused unless the construction and demolition material is less than twenty percent of it.

Tires

Accepted with preparation

Tires are refused at the free curbside clean-up and go to a city recycling collection event on the spring and fall dates, passenger tires only and without rims, or to a King County transfer station that recycles them in its tire bins.

City cost & eligibility
The city recycling collection events take tires at no charge on the spring and fall dates, up to ten per vehicle, and a King County station that recycles tires places them in the recycling stream, so confirm any charge with the county solid waste information line at 206-477-4466 before hauling a load.
When & how
Tires are accepted without rims as passenger tires only at the spring and fall Saturday recycling collection events, limited to ten per vehicle, and the King County stations that run tire bins take them during recycling area hours.
Get it ready
Remove the rims and bring passenger tires only, keep the count to ten per vehicle at a city event, and remember that the county limits a customer to four tires at a station and refuses tires from businesses and large truck tires.

Exercise equipment

Special rules apply

Exercise equipment is built mostly of steel, so the metal frame has a free scrap metal route at a Friday mini recycling event, and anything that will not go as scrap metal is a bulky item that Republic Services can collect from the curb for a fee.

City cost & eligibility
The city publishes no exercise equipment rate, so confirm the route with Republic Services at 206-682-9735 for the on-call bulky item pickup, or bring the metal frame to a Friday mini recycling event, where scrap metal including iron, steel, aluminum, brass and copper is accepted at no charge.
When & how
Scrap metal is collected at the Friday mini events from 9 a.m. to noon on April 10, May 8, July 10, August 14 and September 18, 2026, and the on-call pickup is scheduled with Republic Services at 206-682-9735.
Get it ready
Take the batteries off the machine and drain oil and gas from anything with a small engine before it goes to the scrap metal collection, and keep upholstered or plastic pieces out of the scrap pile because that stream takes items that are half metal or more. Ask the hauler about a treadmill or an elliptical before the on-call pickup.

Household hazardous waste and paint

Accepted with preparation

Paint, batteries, motor oil, solvents, propane tanks and the rest of the household hazardous waste list are refused in every curbside cart, in the free clean-up and at the recycling collection events, so they go to the King County household hazardous waste facility or to a paint stewardship drop-off.

City cost & eligibility
Confirm the accepted material and whether any charge applies with the King County hazardous waste program at 206-296-4692 before the trip, and note that the city paint only events and the PaintCare drop-off sites take leftover paint under the Washington State Paint Stewardship Program.
When & how
The King County household hazardous waste facility in Factoria at 13800 SE 32nd St in Bellevue is open Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and the city paint only events run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hogan Park on March 14 and October 17, 2026. Never put paint, batteries, motor oil, solvents, propane tanks, cleaners or other hazardous material in a curbside cart, in the clean-up or at a recycling collection event, because all three refuse hazardous waste. Keep the material in its original container with a readable label, and keep medicines, mercury containing equipment, motor oil and contaminated soil out of the county's ordinary waste stream.

For a couch, an appliance or a mattress set

Keep appliances and furniture out of the free clean-up week, and ask the hauler about anything that is not on its bulky item sheet before the truck comes.

For a recycling collection event

Split the load between the two event types. A Saturday event at Hogan Park or Canyon Ridge Middle School takes appliances, CFC appliances, batteries, bulky yard debris, mattresses and box springs without futons, porcelain, propane tanks, scrap metal, styrofoam and tires without rims, with concrete, brick and rock in the summer only and passenger tires in the spring and fall only. A Friday mini event from 9 a.m. to noon takes televisions, monitors, computers and the rest of the electronics list, documents for shredding within four legal boxes or five paper bags, and scrap metal. Confirm the Saturday event hours with the city before traveling.

How much can I put out during the Kent curbside clean-up?

Ten units of extra garbage and ten units of yard waste, each container under sixty pounds, placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on your regular yard waste collection day during the spring week of April 6 to 10, 2026 or the fall week of November 2 to 6, 2026. Bag the garbage, box it within three feet five inches on each side or use a can of thirty-two gallons or smaller, because loose trash is not collected.Official guidance

How do I schedule a bulky item pickup in Kent?

Will Kent take a couch at the curb?

Not in the free clean-up, which refuses furniture, but yes on an on-call bulky item pickup that Republic Services runs for a fee. How do I get rid of a mattress in Kent?

Either on a Republic Services on-call bulky item pickup for a fee, scheduled at 206-682-9735, or free at a Saturday recycling collection event, where a mattress and box spring are accepted but a futon is not. The Saturday events in 2026 fall on March 7, June 13 and October 10, and the free curbside clean-up is not the route because it refuses furniture.Official guidance

Where do refrigerators and other appliances go in Kent?

A small appliance two feet by two feet by two feet or smaller and under thirty-five pounds goes on top of the recycling cart at no charge, and a larger appliance goes on a Republic Services on-call pickup for a fee at 206-682-9735. A Saturday recycling collection event takes appliances and CFC appliances free, while a CFC appliance such as an air conditioner, refrigerator or freezer is not accepted in the scrap metal collection at a Friday mini event, and King County recycles major appliances at its transfer stations.Official guidance

Where do televisions and computers go in Kent?

To a Friday mini recycling event, free, from 9 a.m. to noon on April 10, May 8, July 10, August 14 and September 18, 2026, which takes televisions of every type plus computers, laptops, monitors, tablets, e-readers, cell phones, disc players, fax machines, holiday lights, keyboards, mice, microwaves, remote controls, scanners, VCRs and wires. The Saturday events take electronics but not televisions or monitors, King County refuses televisions at its disposal facilities, and ecyclewa.org lists drop-off locations between events.Official guidance

What does Kent charge for garbage and bulky item disposal?

The free Spring and Fall Curbside Clean-Up takes ten units of extra garbage and ten units of yard waste at no charge, a year round bulky item collection is priced by the item on the hauler's 2026 residential rate sheet, and a self haul load at a King County station goes by the county fee schedule with a twenty-five dollar unsecured load fee and a Cleanup LIFT discount of twenty dollars off each type of waste on each visit for a customer with a ProviderOne, EBT or ORCA LIFT card.Official guidance

What will Kent not take at the curb?

Tires, scrap metal, hazardous waste, appliances and furniture are refused at the free curbside clean-up, and construction and demolition material is refused there too. Who handles garbage and disposal in Kent?

Republic Services collects under contract with the city and handles customer service, billing and service changes on the residential line at 206-682-9735 and the commercial line at 253-872-7220, while King County runs the disposal side through the Bow Lake Recycling and Transfer Station in Tukwila and its solid waste information line at 206-477-4466.
